Nintendo Wii makeover: Streamlined style but no GameCube support

, Aug 17th 2011 Discuss [6]

Nintendo is readying a new version of the Wii, featuring a streamlined design intended to be placed horizontally rather than vertically, and with a new, lower price. Confirmed so far for the UK market, and expected to go on sale in time for the holiday shopping season, the updated Wii will be released as part of a new value bundle complete with Wii Party and Wii Sports. However, while there's money to be saved, there's also a cost in terms of lost backward compatibility. Read The Full Story

Nintendo's price slash to the 3DS looks to have reignited interest in the glasses-free 3D gaming handheld, with sales in Japan reportedly flourishing after the discount took effect. According to figures reported by Famitsu, Nintendo shifted 214,821 3DS units in the week between August 8 and August 14 after having dive-bombed in the months following the device's launch. Game industry execs think PS vita launch will be “a car wreck”

, Aug 16th 2011 Discuss [16]

The PS Vita isn't even here yet and already some game developers are calling for a failed product and a launch that one is describing as "a car wreck." How you can call a launch a failure before the product even ships is beyond me. The PS Vita is expected to hit Japan later this year and land in the US early next year. Lyle Hall and Matthew Seymour from Heavy Iron Studios are already predicting failure of the PS Vita. Read The Full Story

Nintendo 3DS Price Cut to $169.99 Today

, Aug 15th 2011 Discuss [1]

Whenever there's a price cut of such a magnitude for a device of such importance as the Nintendo 3DS, one would expect there to be a new device coming out OR for the company selling the device in question to be in some sort of big trouble. What we're looking at here instead is a price cut before a brand new color combination is released for the casing on this device. This leads us to believe that either Nintendo had always planned to lower the price to this point immediately before the Flame Red color release OR both the color combination and the price point are now in place to make a renewed move for higher sales in the face of a sinking traditional games market. LetterBomb hack for Nintendo Wii allows homebrew with System Menu 4.3

, Aug 11th 2011 Discuss [1]

Most of the talk about Nintendo lately has been centered on how poorly the company has been performing financially of late. The Wii has seen sales decline as well as sales of software decline making for some rough quarters. If you have a Wii and are looking for a way to get more use out of the console in the face of a rather boring game line up, a new system hack has surfaced that will allow you to run homebrew software. Nintendo is getting investor pressure to develop iPhone games

, Aug 11th 2011 Discuss [7]

I continue to be surprised that with the beating Nintendo is taking each quarter with its financial situation becoming more and more dire that the gaming company continues to refuse to develop games for other platforms. The move a while back to bring Pokemon titles to other devices was though at first to be a sign that Nintendo would start bringing its first party games to iOS and Android devices. Nintendo later came out and announced that it would not be supporting those platforms and that the Pokemon Company was an independent operation. Read The Full Story

Nintendo “flame red” 3DS coming September 9

, Aug 10th 2011 Discuss [0]

Nintendo keep teasing us with the red 3DS, originally included as part of the pre-launch line-up, and then quietly shelved in favor of the black and blue versions. Now the company has announced that the "flame red" 3DS will go on sale September 9, timed alongside the release of Star Fox 64 3D. Read The Full Story

HP TouchPad: Desperately Discounted

, Aug 6th 2011 Discuss [79]

How much did you pay for your tablet? If you picked up an HP TouchPad in the past day or so, you could have shaved anything up to $200 off the list price for the webOS slate, as HP and its retail partners kick off a round of aggressive discounting. It’s a risky way to boost sales: the TouchPad is a mere month into the market and met with mixed reviews, and it would be easy to see this as HP’s tablet project falling flat on its touchscreen face.

, Aug 4th 2011 Discuss [0]

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has published an apologetic open letter to Nintendo 3DS early-adopters, who "may feel betrayed" by the company's decision to slash the handheld's price to $169.99 mere months after its launch. The letter, available in Japanese on Nintendo's site and translated by Giant Bomb, blames a situation in the gaming segment that has "changed greatly" even in the short time since the 3DS went on sale. Nintendo Possibly Taking a Loss on Every 3DS Unit Sold

, Jul 29th 2011 Discuss [8]

Yesterday many things were revealed about Nintendo, facts about their abysmal earnings this past quarter, the fact that they had "few hit titles," and of course, most importantly, that the price of the Nintendo 3DS had been slashed to $170 from its original $250. Upon further analysis of the earnings call just hours ago, Nintendo's CEO Saturo Iwata appears to have revealed that the gaming company may be taking a loss on every 3DS unit sold with the cut. While some reports have Iwata saying that Nintendo's price cut for the 3DS was necessary and would improve the company's balance sheets this year and next, others have reported that he, in one set of words or another, said that Nintendo is now taking a loss on ever 3DS unit sold.
