Nintendo was counting on the 3DS XL to turn around its ailing fortunes and it looks like the oversized glasses-free 3D console may well do that. The Japanese company is yet to confirm actual sales following the domestic launch, but Enterbrain estimates indicate sales of the 3DS XL beat some of Nintendo's previous portables in the first few days of availability, Famitsu reports. Nintendo saw Wii sales halved in its most recent financial quarter, the company has revealed, with only a surge in 3DS demand helping gross profit grow. Sales of the Wii console dived from 1.56m units in Q1 2011 to 710,000 in Q1 2012 [pdf link], with Nintendo keen to gloss over the dive in favor of focusing on 3DS sales more than doubling from 710,000 to 1.86m in the same period. June NPD: Lego Batman 2 on top, game sales down overall

NPD has released its report of video game sales data for June 2012, and like the months before, it isn't all that pretty. Overall sales of both hardware and software were down 30% year-over-year, dropping from $989 million in June 2011 to $699 million last month. 3DS XL will be sold at a profit, Nintendo to focus less on 3D in future

Ever since Nintendo cut the price of the 3DS last August, the company has been selling the handheld at a loss. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata tells The Independent that won't be the case for the 3DS XL, as it will be making a profit on each and every one sold. It won't be that big of a profit, he says, but it's a profit nonetheless. Unfortunately, Iwata remained resistant to The Independent's questioning on the price of the Wii U, saying that since the company hasn't announced a price for the Wii U yet, it's too early for him to speak on whether or not it will be sold at a profit. What was once labelled a failure can now be labelled a success: Nintendo has announced that the 3DS has hit 5 million sales in the United States, crossing yet another sales milestone after a stellar 2011 holiday season. After a botched launch and a painfully slow uptake that lasted the first six months of the handheld's life, Nintendo slashed the price of the 3DS, causing sales to skyrocket. Rovio has announced that it will be bringing the Angry Birds Trilogy to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo 3DS. The company dropped some hints previously that it would be bringing the popular games from mobile devices to consoles, and now Rovio has said it will bring upgraded versions of the games to three consoles. Nintendo revealed that it would be releasing an upgraded version of the 3DS last week dubbed the 3DS XL, bringing with it a larger screen and improved battery life. Several French gaming websites have already had a chance to take the new handheld for a spin and serve up some first impressions, with the results mostly being positive. Nintendo has revealed a new version of its glasses-free 3D handheld, the Nintendo 3DS LL, packing a 4.88-inch 3D top screen and a 4.18-inch lower touchscreen.
