Nikon unveils My Picturetown for iPhone, free app

nikon iphone 271x480 Nikonians doubt the lack of Apple supports got their answer today; their favorite camera brand is on speaking term with Apple after all. Nikon has released its first “iApp” for the use of iPhone and Nikon’s photo storage and sharing site, My Picturetown online, most importantly, it’s free!

The “My Picturetown for iPhone” enables users of Nikon’s My Picturetown get access to online images stored in their Picturetown account via their iPhone. Additionally, they can also view, create and upload photos as well as tagging and accessing EXIF data directly from their iPhone.

Nikon’s My Picturetown is giving up 2GB of free photo storage online with the option to purchase up to 200GB through the Gold Account. The app is already up for downloading from Apple’s App Store.

Nikon D3x Sensor is Manufactured by Sony

Nikon has officially responded to the question many have asked about who manufactured its Nikon D3x CMOS sensor. It is indeed manufactured by Sony; however Nikon clarified that they design the CMOS sensor. Here is the official statement from Nikon:

The Nikon D3X’s 24.5-megapixel FX-format (35.9 x 24.0mm) CMOS sensor was developed expressly for the D3X in accordance with Nikon’s stringent engineering requirements and performance standards, with final production executed by Sony. Featuring refined low-noise characteristics, 12 and 14 bit output, Live View capability and more, the D3X’s unique sensor design was carefully blueprinted to perform in perfect concert with proprietary Nikon technologies including EXPEED Image Processing and the Scene Recognition System. Meticulous efforts allowed the sensor to become one of the many essential components and technologies which contribute to the D3X’s superior image fidelity.

Nikon D3X Flagship Digital SLR gets Official

You know it’s the real deal when the leak came out of a print magazine, especially an in-house one. It’s official: Nikon Japan today announced its flagship Digital SLR, D3X with 24.5MP FX full frame sensor. It’s the company highest pixel-count digital SLR, 3.4 MP larger than rivalry Canon’s 1Ds Mark III but one-tenth megapixel smaller than Sony’s Alpha A900. The professional series camera is loaded with 3.0-inch, 920,000 dot LCD monitor with dual-mode Live View, 51-point AF, sealed body, Dual-UDMA CF slot, 16 bits EXPEED image processing and can shot up to five frame per second in full resolution still image capture.

Nikon D3x 24-5MP DSLR exposed in official magazine

Nikon have revealed their new D3x DSLR camera, and chosen a somewhat old-skool way to do so: their print magazine, Nikon Pro. The 24.5-megapixel, FX-format camera is capable of 5fps at full resolution or 10-megapixel shots at up to 7fps. However there aren’t the huge leaps in specification or capabilities that many would-be owners were hoping for.

Nikon MX rumors: 40.7MP medium-format DSLR in early 2009

It’s probably safest to switch your sceptic-levels (and microscope) to high, but this minuscule picture could be Nikon’s upcoming MX DSLR. Believed to be the company’s next medium-format camera, its been suggested that the MX will offer 40.7-megapixel shots at 6380 x 6380 resolution. Nikon have promised a big announcement at the Wedding & Portrait Photographer International (WPPI) expo, held in February 2009, and some are speculating that the MX will be the star attraction.

Nikon releases AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens

Nikon rolls out an AF-S prime lens F1.4G 50 mm in celebrating the company’s 75th anniversary of Nikkor Optics. You would think they came out with at least one stop faster Nikkor at its third quarter century milestone. Perhaps there are more to come later. It does feature a silent Wave Motor for faster and quite focusing; the built-in focus motor will support its entry-level Digital SLR D60/D40x/D40 that built without an in-body AF motor. $435.95 will secure you the new Nikkor when it hits the shops in December.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 35 2008

The biggest news this week has been coming out of IFA 2008, with SlashGear’s roving reporter there, Milena Glimbovski, sending back all the details of the hottest new hardware. The netbook train shows no sign of slowing, with LG’s X110 and Fujitsu’s AMILO Mini Ui 3620 finally stepping out of the shadows and getting full announcements. Nikon D90 DSLR officially announced

SlashGear reader Chase Jarvis is a lucky guy: for the past few months he’s been testing out Nikon’s D90 DSLR as part of Nikon’s launch campaign, and he asked if we were interested in seeing the results. Considering all that’s leaked so far have been stock images and rumored specs, we couldn’t turn down the opportunity, so here it is: Nikon’s new D90, with the 12.3-megapixel chip from the D300, 720p video recording and GPS tagging.
