Google's Nexus S is, as we decided in our review of the Gingerbread smartphone, probably the best Android handset around today, but with a surprise price-cut the UK pre-order is even more tempting. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone fell to the practiced hands of xda-community's Koush, taking a metaphorical screwdriver to the OS in the same way that we saw iFixit strip away the Samsung-made handset's hardware. Oh those folks at iFixit, they're so wild in their need to take everything apart. Come with me and see their unscrewing and note with me how they find Nexus S to be more of a gimmick than a feature-filled device. Ruh roh. Did they say gimmick? They sure did. They note first and foremost the fact that it's got a curved display and is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, saying basically that these shouldn't be enough to convince someone to purchase the brand new phone. They do say some nice things though! Or maybe they're just funny. They note that once the back of the phone is off, it looks like something out of Tron: Legacy. Google's Nexus S goes on sale today at Best Buy stores across the US, with the retailer opening at 8am to cater for anticipated demand for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone. Android 2.3 headed to AOSP imminently confirms Google; custom ROMs ahoy!

Google has promised to release the Android 2.3 Gingerbread source shortly after the Nexus S ships today, with developer Jean-Baptiste Queru confirming that the new version is headed to the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) imminently.
