Apparently, Nexus 4 owners have been having some issues keeping their new phone from flying off their desk and ending up on the floor. Because of the rear glass panel, the phone can slide around fairly easily depending on the type of surface it’s on. However, Google redesigned the phone just slightly to prevent unnecessary sliding.

According to German site MobiFlip, the new Nexus 4 features two small nubs towards the bottom of the phone, where the glass meets the edge. These small nubs raise the back of the device just slightly off of the surface to prevent it from sliding around and possibly falling onto the floor causing any kind of damage.

The small nubs also allow the sound coming out of the phone’s speaker to be louder when the device is laid on its back. They’re barely noticeable, but they can make a huge difference in several ways. On top of that, the camera’s lens has been updated as well, with less area around the lens being exposed. We’re not sure if this was because the old lens wasn’t working as efficiently, or if it’s just a simple design tweak that had nothing to do with the camera itself.

Overall, it’s nice to see Google still focusing on the Nexus 4 and improving the hardware even though the phone has already been released. However, those who already own the phone are out of luck, and you’ll have to resort to the bumper case to get a similar effect. However, for those still thinking about buying a Nexus 4, your unit may come with the new changes.

With Google Keep you’ve got a note-taking interface created by the company to be a one-stop-shop inside Android. Like Google Now, this is another value-added element that will be present in most or all future Android devices, and it’s tied to your Google account through Google Drive. If you head to https://drive.google.com/keep/ right this minute (and you’re logged in to your Google account), you’ll find an interface not unlike the one we’re looking at today on an Android smartphone.

Google Keep allows you to take a note that includes any of the following: typed text, dictated text, recorded sound (with dictated text – a bit different than a straight-up sound recording), photos (but not video as of the publish date of this review), and checklists. This system is an extremely sleek, basic, and simplistic iteration of what Google’s competitors work with.

Above: Google Keep on the LG-made Google Nexus 4 smartphone with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

If you look at Evernote, you’ll find a system for taking notes that’s able to accept emailed notes, works with Skitch for hand-written notes and drawings, works with sound recordings in full, video, photos, text, searchable images, business card scanning, and much, much more. Basically Evernote is currently in a whole different league when it comes to being all-inclusive.

In Google Keep you’ve got Google’s take on things. While we’d be baffled if we heard a Google employee claim this was a good competitor with the other more mature systems out there, it wouldn’t be out of the question for Google’s set of features to eclipse the rest in a few years time. But that’s a bit forward-thinking – this app has just been released this week.

You’ll be able to access a new note through several shortcuts, immediately moving to your camera for a photo, your keyboard in a note for text typing, your keyboard and a list for checklists, or a microphone for voice recording/dictation. These four shortcuts are represented by familiar icons along a bar that can exist on your smartphone or tablet as a widget on your homescreen.

Hot Stuff: Google Keep also offers a couple of Lockscreen Widgets for Android 4.2+ that you can use to access your notes right at the power button.

While what you’re able to do with these notes is relatively limited, the entire interface is exceedingly smooth, and it is rather nice to be able to instantly access the notes you take from your smartphone, tablet, or desktop machine on the fly. You can download the Android app from the Google Play app store now absolutely free, and we wouldn’t be surprised if an iOS version came calling sooner than later. Check it out!

With the Google Nexus 4 the Mobility DisplayPort (MyDP) standard was born in the real world – it being the first device to have the ability to transmit information from its microUSB port out to HDMI. The second device to work with this growing standard is the LG Optimus G Pro, a device we’ve had our hands on more than once recently as well. With the SlimPort HDMI Adapter, the folks at Analogix have taken hold of this soon-to-explode standard technology and have made it a real working model – with the device we’re reviewing today, you’ll be outputting video from your Nexus 4 or Optimus G Pro to an HDMI cable to your HDTV at full 1080p – sound included!

It may seem strange to see a review of a peripheral as small as this lovely little Analogix SlimPort HDMI adapter out here in the wild simply due to the large amount of relatively similar solutions on the market. Whenever 20 companies make an smartphone accessory, it always ends up being difficult to tell them apart. When it comes to the SlimPort solution here, on the other hand, there’s really only one way to go – especially when you’re using the LG Optims G Pro or the Google Nexus 4 (also made by LG.)

Last week we were told that the brand new LG Optimus G Pro would be carrying official MyDP standard connectivity in its microUSB port. With that, we heard from SlimPort that they’d be more than happy to let us have a peek at their technology in a rather simple-looking HDMI connector. As it turns out, LG was rather pumped up about this connectivity as well:

“With SlimPort, LG is able to deliver unprecedented functionality at a lower cost, because of its streamlined design and standard USB connector. SlimPort unleashes content from the Optimus G Pro smartphone, making it a snap to share and enjoy videos, games, photos and more on any screen.” – Dr. Ramchan Woo, division leader/smart phone platform division of LG Mobile Communications Company

You’re able to pick up any of several different SlimPort accessories to work with your Nexus 4, LG Optimus G Pro, or future MyDP-enabled devices. The one we’ve got here connects on one end to the microUSB port on your smartphone, the other to an HDMI cord (which you must already own), the HDMI cable then connecting to your secondary display of choice. The reason you’d pick this adapter up instead of the company’s HDTV Cable (microUSB straight out to HDMI), is the microUSB port it works with.

With the microUSB port on the adapter, you’re also able to connect a microUSB cord in that’s also connected to a wall socket – this way your smartphone (or perhaps tablet in the future) is being charged at the same time you’re outputting massive amounts of graphics. That said, this solution also allows you to work without plugging in to the wall – a definite bonus that places this technology over solutions like MHL which, on devices like the Samsung Galaxy S II and III, demand external power to work.

SlimPort’s solution here also requires very little power to utilize. We’ve watched entire movies on the Nexus 4 with this HDMI adapter without external power, in fact, and the LG Optimus G Pro works even longer than the Nexus 4 – what with the larger battery, and all. SlimPort also offers (or will offer in the near future) VGA and DVI out as well.

So have a peek at this HDMI adapter or check out the rest of the collection at SlimPort – you’ll be paying right around $30 USD if you need an adapter today, and the rest of the collection will be appearing online soon. Also have a peek at our Nexus 4 tag portal for more information on this radically popular Google-fresh LG-made smartphone, chock-full of Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor goodness.

Today Google has officially put the Nexus 4 Wireless Charger up for sale, it being a long-awaited half-orb instilled with the power to charge the power of the LG-made Nexus 4. This device is an oddity in the halls of Google-made hardware in that it essentially takes on the shape of the Nexus Q (at defunct Google product currently “back on the drawing board”) and acts as a charger for wireless devices – specifically the Nexus 4 here. And it’s up for sale right this minute!

The Google Nexus 4 is a smartphone that’s easily one of the pure Google Nexus lines’ most successful. Up until just the past couple of weeks, the Nexus 4 smartphone itself has been a toss-up for availability while the T-Mobile edition (essentially the same model, sold by T-Mobile), went low on stock this past week due to a massive sale price on-contract. Now the wireless charging abilities of this device can continue that sell-out action with a whole new accessory.

This is one of a collection of devices out on the market now that uses the Qi standard for wireless charging, this being not all that different from what we saw most recently in the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC DROID DNA. Both devices use the same technology and each device can be charged interchangeably. Just to be safe though, we’re sure each vendor will let you know you’ll want to pick up the charger made specifically for each smartphone – be cautious!

This Nexus 4 Wireless Charger has been put up for sale for $59.99 USD today in the US-based Google Play online store. This means that availability is at least near-ready for the USA and the whole world will be rolling with some wireless charging action in the very near future. This orb weighs in at 130g, by the way, and comes in any color you like – just so long as it’s black.

Also – fun fact: the app being used in the photos provided by Google above is called Battery Widget? Reborn! – an odd choice, to be sure, but interesting!

The Nexus 4 made its first primetime television appearance last night during the Grammy Awards. However, it actually wasn’t at the awards ceremony, but rather as an advertisement during a commercial break. The ad is pretty basic, and it goes over some of the cool features of Google Now, like weather updates, directions, and even language translation.

Google‘s focus on Google Now is a strong indicator that they’re looking to take on Apple’s Siri technology on the iPhone, and are wanting to win the affection of diehard Siri users. The ad itself doesn’t go into a lot of detail on the Nexus 4 — actually, there’s zero details given on the new handset, other than the fact that is has Google Now on board.

This makes for an interesting way to promote a smartphone. While many companies tout the specs and numerous features of a device, Google has been focusing on one single feature that takes the spotlight, and most recently it’s been Google Now. In the one-minute ad, you can see Google Now Google Now doing a whole host of things, like checking the weather, finding a restaurant, and setting up a Google+ Hangout.

Google definitely wants its ads to communicate with its viewers in a personal way, and they show off some of the things you can do with their devices in an everyday situation. Gone are the days of flashy commercials with smartphones doing flip tricks while a dubstep track plays in the background. At least we wish those days were gone.

Mobile carrier T-Mobile USA has placed the Google Nexus 4 smartphone on sale this week for a surprising nearly-$250 discount, going “out of stock” once again rather rapidly after having done so. This announcement comes quickly after it was figured out by some intrepid fans that LG had ramped up production so well that 1,000,000 units were now on the market – a giant undertaking and speed-up compared to what was out only a few months ago! T-Mobile will now be making sure they’re back in-stock as quickly as they’ve drained out – and will a massive influx of Android users on their hands, they’ll certainly be glad to do so!

With the Google Nexus 4, LG created a device that was at once extremely powerful and surprisingly inexpensive. While we’re still not entirely sure how Google is able to offer the device for a price so low (right around $300 USD) off-contract, it would appear that T-Mobile is out-doing the big G with their own ways and means. When you do decide to pick up a device from T-Mobile, mind you, you wont be getting the same deal as when you pick one up from Google.

With a T-Mobile purchase of a Google Nexus 4, you’re getting a 2-year contract attached to your smartphone. When you purchase a Google Nexus 4 from Google, you get that device with no contractual obligations. It would appear that the popularity of the Google Nexus 4 being entirely due to its relatively low off-contract price has been rendered obsolete – let the $50 “discount” roll on!

Have a peek at the timeline below of recent stories surrounding the Google Nexus 4 and let us know if you’ve got one already. Also be sure to speak up if you’re planning on purchasing a Nexus 4 but aren’t quite sure at the moment if you’re going to be wanting one straight from Google, from T-Mobile, or from some third strange and mysterious source. We’ll be waiting for you!

This week it would appear that production of the Google Nexus 4 by LG has reached a whopping 1,000,000 units. Information leading to this revelation comes from the folks at XDA Developers Forums and specifically a post by the member known as draugaz with his de-coding of a serial code from Turkey which points to the 999,998th in a line of production units that continues to march on to this day. The code break-down was done several weeks ago when two different IMEI-reading websites appeared to help the Nexus 4 addicts amongst us discover more information about each individual unit.

The first site you’re going to want to check if you’re all about discovering the inner points of your own LG Nexus 4 is LG’s own. This CSMG site will have you plugging in the IMEI number (from the sales bars on your device’s original box) with the output giving you something like this: ATURBK 302KPSL999998 20130205 TURKEY.

Incidentally, that’s the code that draugaz is claiming to have, it showing the several of the finer points in discovering when this device and each other Nexus 4 was made. It also shows where it sits in line compared to the rest of the devices created since the beginning of production of the Nexus 4. This begins with 302KPSL999998, this being broken down as such:

The first number denotes year, with 1 representing 2011 through 3 representing 2013, making this code start with the year 2013. The next two numbers show month, this month being February (02). The fourth character shows where the device was manufactured, with both K and C appearing on Nexus 4 devices – this unit was manufactured in Korea. While no one yet seems to know what the next three letters represent (we’ve seen PHG, PSL, PRW,) the next set of numbers in this same string show how many devices have thus far been produced.

If you’d like to check this for yourself, you can also head to the website http://sndeep.info/ and drop in your IMEI number for a bit more of a “dummy” guide to what you’re seeing. You’ll there be able to see what color your device is (wow!), serial number decoded, manufacturing date, and “Made for” qualifications. Sound pretty good to you?

Now remember also that the intrepid masterminds at XDA have been tracking these production numbers for some time, finding that production has been ramping up in the last few months. These appear to be true based on the IMEI numbers submitted by several members:

October (2011): 70,00 Units
November: 90,000
December: 210,000
January: 550,000
February: 1,000,000+

That sounds like a rather healthy ramp-up to today when the Nexus 4 seems to be shipping quicker and quicker. We’ve heard from readers this week that they’ve received their Nexus 4 packages less than a week after ordering, even when Google’s online store says that ship times could be up to 4 weeks. Things are looking up!

Be sure to check out our full review of the Google Nexus 4 as well as our review of the T-Mobile Nexus 4 – basically the same device, sent to you from a different perspective. Both reviews have different authors and take on different points of view – thus is the importance of this device!

Thanks for the tip, John K!
