Google recruiting User Experience Lead for Google TV apps

Google is looking to recruit a new user experience lead, responsible for Google TV apps and the related SDK. According to the job description, the successful candidate will be "asked to pioneer new possibilities for web-based and Android application experiences on the platform and establish the patterns and standards used to develop great interactive experiences on Google TV." The new position follows speculation that Google plans to pull the Android AOSP for Google TV, Gingerbread for phones and Honeycomb for tablets into a single code base. Read The Full Story

$900m Google bid for Nortel patent portfolio in defensive Android play

Google has announced that it is bidding for Nortel Network's patent portfolio, as the communications company attempts to sell off its assets and satisfy creditors. Describing the move as "a disincentive for others to sue Google" while simultaneously calling for patent reform, Kent Walker, Google's senior vice president and general counsel, confirmed that the search giant's $900m offer had been accepted as the "stalking-horse bid." Acer CEO quits over product development disagreements [Updated]

Acer CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci has resigned, stepping down from the company with immediate effect. Acer claims the change - which will see chairman J.T. Wang take the acting CEO role in the interim - was down to Lanci holding "different views from a majority of the board members" which "could not reach a consensus following several months’ of dialog." Kindle NY Times subscribers to get paywall pass

Amazon has confirmed that digital subscribers to the New York Times Kindle edition will get free access to the newspaper's website as part of their bundled content.  The NY Times paywall - announced earlier this month and in operation since yesterday - is priced from $15 per month for web and smartphone access, but if you have a $19.99 per month Kindle subscription you'll also be able to access the main site. Apple software chief Bertrand Serlet steps down

Apple has confirmed that Senior VP of Mac Software Engineering Bertrand Serlet is to leave the company, having worked with CEO Steve Jobs for 22 years. Serlet was responsible for developing products both NeXT and Apple, and will be replaced by current VP Craig Federighi. "At this point, I want to focus less on products and more on science" Serlet said; the executive holds a doctorate in Computer Science, but is yet to confirm his next project. Read The Full Story

iPhone 4, iPad 2, and iMovie Make Breaking News Footage

With the iPad 2 having just touched down a week ago, with many still without the device, creative feats are already surfacing from the first music video to now the first breaking news footage. A Minneapolis resident, Robert Stephens, who also happens to be co-founder of Geek Squad, was on his way to work when he recorded a gas explosion on his iPhone 4, which he then edited using iMovie on his iPad 2. RSA SecurID system hack could undermine “effectiveness” of security tokens

As bad security news goes, the confirmation that EMC's RSA system - at the heart of SecurID two-factor authentication products provided by many corporations and banks - has been potentially undermined isn't going to give many system admins much relief today. According to RSA Chairman Art Coviello, "an extremely sophisticated cyber attack" has been spotted that managed to extract "certain information" that "could potentially be used to reduce the effectiveness" of the SecurID tokens. New York Times confirms paywall from March 28

The New York Times has become the latest publication to opt for a paywall, with the news that as of March 28 a subscription will be required to access any more than 20 articles per month. The paper is beginning tests of the digital subscriptions today for Canadian readers - home delivery and International Herald Tribune subscribers get complimentary access - while access to articles reached from Twitter, Facebook or other online routes will be permitted even if you're over your monthly allowance.
