Netflix-cable company talks reportedly already happening

, Mar 6th 2012 Discuss [2]

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has said he doesn't want to compete with traditional cable companies; he wants to compete with HBO. Not unintentionally, HBO has also been a target of traditional cable companies (with the exception of Time Warner Cable, whose parent company owns HBO). So a partnership between Netflix and satellite/cable broadcasters may very well be inevitable. Read The Full Story

TDG report compares cable video-on-demand to Netflix

, Mar 5th 2012 Discuss [1]

So, before there was Netflix, there were dedicated digital cable channels that allowed cable subscribers to watch various TV shows and movies for free, usually with some sort of ad-supported structure. Right now, if you're like most cable users in the country, you're probably thinking, "Oh yeah, that's right. There are on-demand channels that I can access from my cable box." The problem is you never actually go there to watch anything. And here are some numbers to prove that. Read The Full Story

Amazon nabs Magnolia Pictures digital streaming rights

, Feb 29th 2012 Discuss [0]

The biggest headline to make out of this story is not necessarily that Amazon Prime members can now stream Hobo With a Shotgun. Rather, the real story here is the contrast in the fact that Amazon has added another movie studio to its streaming program within one week of Netflix losing one of its biggest content partners. Netflix recently failed to renegotiate its contract with Starz Play. Read The Full Story

So far, the cable companies haven't exactly been that excited. Read The Full Story

This would be the latest extension for the platform, which has already launched on set-top boxes like the Roku as well as Android and the iPhone/iPad. Netflix Starz Play titles pulled from streaming

Starz is ending its streaming content contract with Netflix and will be yanking all of its Starz Play titles from the service in the very near future. Starz was one of the strongest Netflix content partners because it was able to bring Disney movies to the platform, as well as titles from Sony Pictures. However, because of the complicated licensing issues between Disney/Sony and Starz, and the agreements Netflix had with the Xbox 360, the companies involved started renegotiating their contract. , Feb 23rd 2012 Discuss [0]

In the most recent quarter, Dish Network managed to add 22,000 new subscribers, a feat it says was accomplished by its acquisition of fledgling retail chain Blockbuster. If you are still living in the 1990s, what you probably picture from reading that statement is a bunch of promotional standees in Blockbuster stores offering a special Dish Network subscription package. Nope, the brick-and-mortar section of Blockbuster is very much dead weight, but Dish's marketing of the company's online service seems to be working. Read The Full Story
