Build Your Own Telepresence Robot For $500

Remember that Vgo telepresence robot for the kid that couldn't go to school? The one that cost the school $6000 plus $1200 a year service contract? Well, a hacker by the name Johnny Chung Lee has come up with a way to create his own telepresence robot that's a whole lot more affordable. His hack robot is made from relatively cheap components including a netbook and an iRobot, each costing $250, plus an acrylic stand. In the end, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop really didn’t have a choice. When he surveyed the competitive landscape, he found that he was boxed into a corner. While Android might have looked attractive as an alternative for their fledgling smartphone business, to back it would make him just another Android licensee. And while he could have tapped into their software ecosystem, it would have been hard for him to differentiate at the hardware level and thus be thrust against the dozens of Android handset vendors chasing the growing smartphone market.

Welcome to this week's edition of the SlashGear Week in Review! If you are a PC hardware geek an AMD spokesman causally showed off an unannounced video card on Monday called the HD 6990. The card has dual GPUs and should be very fast. We heard a bit of early detail on the PSP2 from Nikkei that claimed the new portable would have an OLED touchscreen, 3G and a new CPU. Acer has unveiled its latest netbook, the Aspire One E100 Education, and as the name suggests it's targeted at classrooms. The 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 ultraportable dual-boots Windows 7 and Android - the latter being positioned as an instant-on option for quick browsing - and can be specified with a rubberized coating for bump protection; there's also a pocket into which a student can slot their name card, so that multiple E100 units don't get confused. Dell Inspiron Duo hybrid hits Three in February

UK carrier Three has announced that, as of February, it will be offering the Dell Inspiron Duo convertible hybrid netbook/tablet. Based on Intel's dual-core 1.5GHz Atom N550 with 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard-drive, the Windows 7 based Inspiron Duo has a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen that can rotate in its bezel to face forward, for regular notebook use, or outward, to be used as a tablet. SaberTooth ZF Turbo ZIF 1.8″ SSD for notebooks debuts
