NEC isn't much known for its Android devices outside of Japan, but having played with the Media Tab UL N-08D at CEATEC we now think that's something of a shame: it's one of the best tablets we've seen so far. Running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on a 7-inch, 1,280 x 800 LCD display, and clad in a 7.9mm thick, 249g chassis made of metal, plastic, and carbon fiber, it's fast and feels high-quality in the hand.

Tomorrow's robots and security systems could be able to face-recognize three times as many people using a fraction of the processing power, according to NEC. The company's new large-scale image processing tech can track and identify faces and clothing - as well as potentially suspicious behavior - for three times the number of people in-frame simultaneously, compared to existing systems, a potential boon not only to security installations in airports and shopping centers, but for your friendly home robot.

Fujitsu, NEC and DoCoMo take on Qualcomm with new 3G/4G chip company

Some of the leading lights in Japanese mobile tech have joined forces to take on Qualcomm and TI in developing wirelessly-enabled smartphone and tablet chipsets. Fujitsu, NTT DoCoMo, NEC and Fujitsu Semiconductor have created Access Network Technology Limited, a new collaboration that will produce "industry-leading communications platform products" and reduce reliance on foreign-made wireless components.

NEC has unveiled a pair of new Android tablets both carrying the LifeTouch L name. One of the tablets is aimed at individuals with other aimed at business users. There are two versions of the tablet for individuals with one packing 32 GB of storage and the other featuring 16 GB of storage. The tablets for individuals will release on July 5.

NEC demos gesture-based interactive controls

NEC has today announced the research and development of a technology that would see users interacting with information via gestures and movement. The system comprises of a movable camera, projector, and displays, allowing the user to physically manipulate information and photos ala Minority Report. No traditional input devices like mice or keyboards are needed, with a demonstration showing photos being moved with just a single hand.

NEC LaVie Z Ultrabook weighs just 2.2lbs

Haven’t bought your Ultrabook yet? Here’s another manufacturer hoping to entice you with its wares. NEC has announced its own Ultrabook, the LaVie Z. You can expect to see the same Intel guts in all the other Ultrabooks, but NEC is using some premium materials for its own version. The case is constructed from a lithium-magnesium alloy, which makes it durable and light too: just 2.2 lbs.

NEC shows off three interesting Android devices

We don't hear much from NEC here in the US on the tablet/smartphone front, but in Asia the company has several products that fall under those categories. Most of what we get from NEC in the US are projectors. NEC has unveiled three new Android 4.0 LTE handsets in Japan, and two of them look particularly interesting. Granted they're strapped with names that are odd to my ears. My favorite of the three products is called the Best Cloud Device.
