Google Maps allows 3rd party apps free reign with developer APIs

A new set of two API releases for developers will soon have 3rd party apps working with Google Maps features that will allow them to be location aware - with location information not just relegated to GPS. The first of two releases is the Google Maps Tracks API, this allowing developers to integrate the display and analyzation of GPS data on a map, with this API being built on top of Google's own cloud infrastructure for reliability that's unmatched. The second of two releases today works with Google Maps Geolocation API, this enabling developers the ability to integrate location data found by looking up said information on nearby wifi access points and cell towers. Garmin smartphone apps getting public transportation features soon

Garmin announced at IFA today that it's gearing up to roll out a set of updates for its smartphone apps on both iOS and Android. These updates will be adding a number of helpful tools for Garmin users, including in-depth details on public transportation routes and support for Google Street View. Navigon iPhone update adds Street View

If you need better navigation from your iPhone than Maps can provide (until iOS 6, anyway), then Navigon’s software might be a good fit. The company has updated its iPhone app today to add new features, and will be reducing the cost of the app and in-app purchases for a limited time. NAVIGON 2.0 adds offline maps to iPhone

Garmin has launched a new version of its NAVIGON navigation app for iPhone, with v2.0 adding the option to download maps for offline access as well as introducing quarterly map updates. NAVIGON 2.0 for iPhone follows Nokia Maps' offline mapping with state-by-state downloads in the US (those using the app outside the US will likely get country-by-country download options) so that you can navigate while your data connection is turned off. Navigon GPS app hits Windows Phone 7.5 Mango

Garmin completes purchase of Navigon

Back in June, we caught wind that Garmin was looking to gobble up Navigon. Navigon is a company that is big in Europe and will also help Garmin make inroads into the OEM navigation space for vehicles. Garmin Confirms Navigon Acquisition To Complete By Late July

Although Google Maps and GPS features of smartphones today have pretty much crushed the portable navigation device markets for Garmin and Navigon, the two companies are still dominant in other navigation areas including built-in automotive and marine navigation software and products. Navigon updates iPhone app with new features

Navigon pull PND business from US

Navigon have announced their intention to withdraw from the US satnav market, citing the "difficult economic environment" and "aggressive pricing".  Despite describing the exit as potentially temporary, Navigon CEO Egon Minar did confirm that the company's Chicago office has seen a "significant number" of job losses; those that remain on will operate as a skeleton support staff "to fulfill all obligations to our existing PND customers in terms of map update[s], etc." Read The Full Story

Navigon 7300T, 4300T max and 3300 max PNDs

Navigon have announced three new PNDs, each with touchscreen interfaces and 3D mapping.  The Navigon 7300T and 4300T max both get Rand McNally mapping data, with 250 pre-loaded Weekend Getaways, Scenic Tours and Regional Trips; in addition they both have Bluetooth hands-free functionality and spoken traffic alerts.  Meanwhile, the Navigon 3300 max offers more basic GPS services, though still includes Lane Assistant Pro, text-to-speech and Reality View for more accurately displaying exits.
