NASA and SpaceX are just hours away from the next planned resupply mission to the International Space Station, the second commercial mission by the private firm, with a 1,268 pound payload of food, experiments, and more. SpaceX 2 is expected to take off at 10:10am EST from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, arriving at the ISS the following day, and then being snagged using the orbiting space platform’s robotic arm.
Weather can do some bizarre things here on Earth. From flooding to volcanoes to tsunamis, our planet has a lot of strange phenomenon that it can throw at us. On February 7, we reported that NASA's Curiosity rover had successfully drilled into the Martian soil for the first time ever, making a small hole and acquiring a sample of the rock. The sample was to then be transferred to the robot's on-board laboratory, where it would undergo a process that allowed its properties to be analyzed, something that is successfully underway.

It's your lucky then, because NASA has announced that it will begin testing new communication and data transmission technologies using lasers starting in October. The system will be called OPALS, or Optical Payload for Lasercomm Science, and it "has the potential to change the way data is transmitted from space to Earth."

Scientists have announced that they have discovered an odd little planet that has set a new record for the smallest alien world ever discovered. According to the scientists, the exoplanet is about the same size as the Earth's moon. The planet has been dubbed Kepler-37b.

It may look like bad graphics from an 8-bit video game, but you're actually looking at asteroid 2012 DA14 as it made its Earth-buzzing flyby, courtesy of the Goldstone Solar System Radar. The blurry footage of the roughly 130-foot long space rock was captured as it was moving away from the Earth on February 15, with the 230-foot Deep Space Network antenna capturing shots of it as close as 74,000 miles away.

NASA has announced that it briefly lost contact with the International Space Station on Tuesday. The ISS was out of contact with ground controllers after some sort of computer problem blocked communications. NASA says that the computer issue lasted just under three hours.

The scientific community is still following the meteor that exploded over Russia last Friday closely. The meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia at approximately 7:20 PM PST. The explosion had enough force to blow the Windows out of hundreds of buildings and cause injury to an estimated 1200 people, mostly from falling glass.

ISS astronaut -- and soon to be commander -- Chris Hadfield announced on Friday that he'd be conducting a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) on February 17. True to his promise, Hadfield showed up and answered questions from eager minds wanting to know what it's like to be in space. Hadfield ended up answering quite a bevy of questions, dealing with his fears in space, the dangers involved, and even giving advice to those young ones seeking to be astronauts in the future.

It seems like only yesterday when the SpaceX Dragon capsule launched its way to the International Space Station for the first time back in May, and now it's reporting for duty yet again for the third time. NASA has announced that the capsule will be planned to launch on March 1 to bring even more supplies on board the ISS, as well as take back some materials when the capsule returns to Earth.
