New unmanned Dream Chaser spacecraft designed for ISS missons

Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC) created a new spacecraft to compete in NASA's latest space vehicle contract. SNC's newest creation is the Dream Chaser Cargo System. This futuristic looking spacecraft is designed to fly back and forth between earth and the International Space Station (ISS) and is planning to do so completely unmanned. The newest model of the Dream Chaser is in the running for NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services 2 (CRS2) contract and will be competing against other private companies such as Space X and Boeing.

Solar eclipse captured in photo series from ISS

The solar eclipse that took place today was photographed from the International Space Station, giving a look at the phenomenon from a unique vantage point. The images were snapped by Expedition 43 Flight Engineer Samantha Cristoforetti, some of which she posted on her Twitter account (which is full of other fascinating space-centric pictures). These images, of course, aren't to be confused with that fake solar eclipse picture that has been making its way around Twitter. We've a gallery after the jump!

NASA hails successful test of Mars lander tech

NASA is working on a new Mars lander technology that will allow scientists to place a spacecraft exactly where they want on the surface of the red planet. This lander tech is known as ADAPT. The test system is designed to help a spacecraft divert course and make a smooth pinpoint landing. By contrast, when Curiosity landed on Mars, NASA scientists had a massive landing area 12 miles by 4 miles as the location they wanted to hit.

NASA's MAVEN craft has sent back data on auroras and dust at high altitudes above Mars - the latter is a mystery to observers both amateur and professional. NASA tests LEAPTech: a crazy experimental 18-engine electric wing

NASA is testing their latest experiment; the new idea is the LEAPTech electric wing. LEAPTech stands for Leading Edge Asynchronous Propeller Technology, and this set of wings looks very different from a traditional airplane wing. The LEAPTech wing looks a bit strange with its narrow surface area and its lengthy 31-foot wingspan. Not to mention that the wings are decked out with 18 small engines, while most commerical jets normally have two or four engines. It's electric and aims to be safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly.

NASA successfully launches Magnetosphere Multiscale spacecraft

NASA has announced that it has successfully launched four new spacecraft this week. The spacecraft are called the Magnetosphere multiscale (MMS) spacecraft and will be positioned in Earth orbit. The spacecraft launched on top of a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket on Thursday, March 12. The launch occurred at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Space Launch Complex 41.

Hubble finds an underground ocean on Jupiter’s largest moon

The possibility of life on other planets just became more probable with NASA's Hubble telescope's latest discovery. Hubble uncovered evidence of a giant underground ocean on Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede. Ganymede is the largest moon in our entire solar system and has long drawn the focus of astronomers as they search for conditions that could be hospitable to life on other planets. The theory of underground oceans on Ganymede was first proposed on in the 1970's, but it wasn't until now that scientists uncovered solid evidence.

Researchers have been studying Saturn's moon Enceladus after research has shown that the moon might have water under the icy surface that is warm enough to sustain life. Scientist have been looking at data gathered by the Cassini orbiter that hints that the moon might have thermal activity on the ocean floor that could provide the conditions needed for life to develop.
