We’re sizable fans of Drobo’s “intelligent data robot” here at SlashGear – in fact it’s one of the items in our Holiday Gift Guide - and since we’re also sizable fans of cheaper prices it’s a double-win for the company’s latest deal. Not only have prices on the 2TB and 4TB ready-built NAS’ been permanently cut, there’s also a $50 instant saving on those and the driveless entry-level Drobo.
Fujitsu have updated their Scaleo Home Server range with two new models, adding capacity to the media streaming and NAS backup products. The Home Server 2205 is preinstalled with two 1TB drives, while the Home Server 2105 is preinstalled with two 500GB drives; however there’s room for a total of four drives in each. Fujitsu have used Western Digital Caviar Green SATA HDDs, for reduced power consumption.
Sony’s VAIO VGF-HS1 Home Server, which was launched in Japan back in May, has finally appeared in the US. Unlike its fellow circular-HTPCs, the HS1 is basically a network-attached storage and streaming device; outfitted with 1TB of storage from dual 500GB 7,200rpm hard-drives, it supports remote backup, DLNA streaming and one-touch photo and video transfer.
Seagate are exploring new SSD technologies that combine SLC (single layer chip) and MLC (multiple layer chip) to create a cost-effective and reliable hybrid. Talking to Pocket-lint, Seagate CEO Bill Watkins revealed that the company would “love to have an SSD range” but that issues with read/write cycle performance and production cost are slowing them down. Pat King, senior vice president of global marketing, also confirmed that Seagate are planning a network-attached storage (NAS) device for home customers.

Mvix have announced their latest NAS device, the MvixBOX WDN-2000 2-Bay Ultra Performance NAS/Media Server, complete with remote file access, bittorrent downloads, dynamic website hosting and data backup. Capable of holding two SATA drives of up to 1.5TB capacity each, the MvixBOX has gigabit connectivity and will ship in a drive-free state for users to add their own storage.
Buffalo’s TeraStation Pro has just received a significant capacity bump, with the Japanese arm of the company announcing a 6TB version of the network-attached-storage device, the TS-H6.0TGL/R5. Four 1.5TB hard-drives are set up in a quick-swap RAID array, capable of RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10 setups, with gigabit network connectivity and jumbo frame support.
The iOmega StorCenter ix2 NAS server was announced today and it’s getting a bit of Bluetooth support, though not as much as many would have liked to see.
In fact, the new NAS server can only really be described as “Bluetooth-friendly,” which means it will support some USB Bluetooth dongles. You would have to pay extra for the dongle, though it would allow you to send files and such from your mobile devices straight to the server for backing up or for sharing with others.
LG have unveiled what looks to be the world’s first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device with a built-in Blu-ray drive. Looking to have borrowed a few design cues from Apple, the N4B1 has up to 4TB of storage (presumably spread across some sort of RAID array) and a Blu-ray burner for making copies of data to be stored off-site.
Popcorn Hour’s undoubtedly brilliant “networked media tank” has been in to get re-armed, and come back as the A-110. To the bevy of codecs supported there’s now 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA HDD and USB Slave functionality, HDMI has been updated to 1.3a, and there’s new support of HD Audio pass-through for DTS HD-HR, DTS HD-MA, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD.
