Details and fuzzy live shots of ASUS’ upcoming Home Server have leaked, and while there’s no official word from the company themselves this looks like the kind of compact storage we would happily find space for on our bookshelves.  The 9.6 x 3.8 x 8 inch ASUS Home Server TS mini packs twin 3.5-inch hard-drives together with a fulsome six USB 2.0 ports and two eSATA ports.

LG have announced a new NAS (network-attached storage) which rather than positioning as a computer peripheral are instead suggesting would make a great place to back up multimedia files.  The LG N2R1 packs up to 2TB of storage and RAID data redundancy, and can function as a DLNA or iTunes media server in addition to backing up your family photos, videos of grandparents falling off chairs and other priceless clips.

If only this were a desktop microwave-cum-coffee-machine, ideal for topping up your caffeine levels and heating up your harried lunches, but sadly it’s just Iomega’s latest NAS.  The Iomega StorCenter ix4-200d squeezes four SATA-II 3.5-inch drive bays into a reasonably compact footprint, promising RAID 5, 10 or JBOD setups and up to 8TB of standard storage.

In a welcome change from reams of press release to wade through, Lenovo have tipped their upcoming home server and nettops via Twitter: 140 characters of spec-free mystery.  The IdeaCentre D400 home server and IdeaCentre Q100/Q110 nettops are yet to make an appearance on the Lenovo US site, but according to the company will get an announcement sometime this week.  However that hasn’t stopped details from popping up across the web.

Hitachi have announced a new range of simple USB hard-drives, together with a basic NAS adapter which can connect two external drives to a network.  The SimpleDRIVE Mini and SimpleTOUGH portable USB drives are available in 250, 320 and 500GB capacities, with the former adding ruggedness and the latter basic colors.

Careful where you pour that hot water: on the right is a 12oz coffee cup, while on the left is Synology’s latest NAS, the 4-bay Disk Station DS409slim.  Squeezing up to four 2.5-inch hard-drives into a 120 x 105 x 142 mm box, the DS409slim still offers up to 2TB of storage or various levels of RAID secure data redundancy.

As hugely convergent devices go, D-Link’s DIR-685 Xtreme N Storage Router could be best of breed.  Announced at CES in January, the DIR-685 not only offers WiFi draft-n support and four gigabit ethernet ports, but a 3.5-inch display with multimedia widgets, dual USB 2.0 ports for sharing printers and external drives, and an internal 2.5-inch HDD bay for turning it into a NAS.  Overkill or network overlord?  OhGizmo! took a look, and while the DIR-685 is expensive it’s also just as capable as you’d hope.

Western Digital have updated their My Book World Edition II NAS, boosting the dual-drive device to a total of 4TB.  Two models will be available – 2TB and 4TB -each offering either RAID 0 or 1 setup for a choice of mirroring or striping.
