Nokia N900 Android 2.3.1 Gingerbread port gets video demo

Efforts to put Android 2.3.1 on the Nokia N900 came to fruition last week, and now there's a video demo to prove it. DrunkDebugger has released footage of the platform transplant - which is still a work-in-progress for the moment - and while the resistive touchscreen of the N900 might not be up there alongside capacitive displays, the whole experience looks solid.

Nokia N900 gets Parrot AR.Drone remote control [Video]

The Nokia N900 continues to show its appeal this week; after getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread on Wednesday, now the Maemo smartphone has become the next way to control Parrot's AR.Drone. As we found in our AR.Drone review, Parrot only offers iOS remote control apps officially, and has left the APIs open for developers to create Android and other apps themselves. That's just what Maemo chief engineer Kate Alhola has done with her N900.

Nokia Instant Community gets new video demo: ideal for cruising

Nokia Instant Community gets new video demo: ideal for cruising

Nokia Research have pushed out a second video demonstrating their Nokia Instant Community system of WiFi-based group messaging, and while first time around it was portrayed as a way to share sport event and concert opinions with those nearby, now everything has gotten a bit cruisy.  The principle is the same - ad-hoc WiFi connections are set up with nearby devices, and you can send out text, photo and video messages as well as see how many of your previous contacts are within range - but now it's being used to woo with amateur poetry, reconnect with random people you "encountered" at the gym, and get yourself invited to parties.

Nokia Instant Community: ad-hoc networks for chat & media sharing [Video]

Nokia Instant Community: ad-hoc networks for chat & media sharing [Video]

Nokia Research have been showing off a new technology designed to create impromptu WiFi mesh networks for chat and media sharing, and it's far more interesting than their partnership announcement with Yahoo! yesterday.  Wired grabbed a hands-on with the Nokia Instant Community system, which automatically creates ad-hoc WiFi connections between nearby devices; each device acts as a repeater, meaning the network could theoretically spread throughout a stadium or hall.  Initial apps include group text chatting together with photo and video sharing.

Nokia N900 gets Maemo 1.2 update; official MeeGo a no-go

Nokia N900 gets Maemo 1.2 update; official MeeGo a no-go

Nokia's N900 has just been gifted a software update, though it's not the MeeGo v1.0 firmware we're waiting for (more bad news about that after the cut).  Maemo 5 version 1.2 (v10.2010.19-1) is out in the UK today and will go global by the end of the week; it boosts email support, adds Facebook IM chat, video calling and portrait-orientation browsing, together with tweaking Nokia Ovi Maps.

Overclocked Nokia N900 hits 1GHz

Overclocked Nokia N900 hits 1GHz

Nokia's N900 is already the device of choice for those who like to tinker with alternative software, but how about overclocking the 600MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor by 50-percent?  That's just what Maemo forum member Lehto has managed to do, releasing several new kernels that can drive the N900's core clock speed from a mild 700MHz boost to 950MHz.  In fact, he reckons he's had his N900 going even faster.

Dumbing down: the price of a good UX?

Dumbing down: the price of a good UX?

Microsoft has caught some grief this past week over the latest stage of the copy & paste debacle, a meme that began when Apple omitted the functionality from the iPhone (and took two years to add it in) and was resurrected upon the admission that Windows Phone 7 series wouldn't ship with the ability to snip text from one app and paste it into another. In fact, copy & paste is just one example of Microsoft locking down their new smartphone experience, slicing a great deal of OEM and user customisation out in the process. They're not the only firm to do so, however; merely the latest to seemingly decide that users want delineated - perhaps even prescriptive - experiences rather than flexibility.
