Nokia commits to “embrace change” as WP7 rumors bump shares

Nokia commits to “embrace change” as WP7 rumors bump shares

Speculation over Nokia's potential adoption of an OS other than Symbian and MeeGo continues, with the company's share price buoyed amid rumors of a surprise announcement at the Finnish company's pre-MWC investors event and after a European analyst publicly called for the adoption of Windows Phone 7. Triggered by CEO Stephen Elop's recent comments that Nokia "must build, catalyse or join a competitive ecosystem," interpreted by many as a sign that the company might be reconsidering its dedication to current platform strategy, rumors of a WP7 or Android announcement have been little quelled by Nokia's tight-lipped secrecy ahead of the event next Friday.

MeeGo superphone bug report tips 1.6GHz Atom & HSPA+

A MeeGo bug report could have spilled the beans on an upcoming flagship smartphone, with the promise of a 1.6GHz Intel processor, 854 x 480 display, 21Mbps HSPA+ support and NFC. Over at the Maemo forums they've dug through the chip references and come up with a lengthy hardware feature list that suggests Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's comments on building, catalysing or joining "a competitive ecosystem" may well be, as we suggested, a sign that the Finnish company intends to participate in the smartphone spec-sheet "arms race".

Samsung’s Galaxy S2 makes unplanned teaser appearance [Video]

It's the season for smartphone teasers; LG has been working the Optimus 3D angle, and Samsung has been making a song & dance about the Galaxy S2, the dual-core successor to their wildly popular Galaxy S family. Today we've received further confirmation that the LTE smartphone will offer simultaneous voice and data- and we've learned that the ThunderBolt will launch with mobile hotspot functionality.

MeeGo UI update goes covert ahead of “feature complete” reveal

MeeGo UI update goes covert ahead of “feature complete” reveal

Nokia is secretly readying an updated UI for MeeGo devices, with the Qt developers responsible for the new UI components for Qt Quick announcing that, for the moment, they will not be pushing out MeeGo changes to the public. The decision comes as the new MeeGo UI starts "to become feature complete"; Nokia won't confirm any timescale at this stage, but with MWC 2011 approaching and new CEO Stephen Elop making his first real public debut to talk about the company's strategies moving forward, we wouldn't be surprised if this was intended to keep a Barcelona reveal under wraps.

Verizon HTC Android phone latest to leak

Verizon HTC Android phone latest to leak

Short of only making a single prototype and sewing it into Peter Chou's trouser pocket, we're not sure what HTC could do to stop its smartphones leaking and spoiling the surprise come launch day; still, if they didn't we wouldn't get premature glimpses of models like this Verizon slab from the mobile01 forums. Hot on the heels of the potential Desire replacement from earlier today, this Verizon-branded model is also expected to run Android.
