Rhapsody buys Napster in attempt to fight Spotify

Rhapsody announced today that it will be buying Napster from Best Buy to boost its subscriber base and expand its IP portfolio. The move appears to be a direct reaction to the intensifying competition from music service rivals like Spotify, which has been hogging much of the spotlight lately. The terms of the deal have not been revealed, but it is expected to close around November 30 with Best Buy receiving a minority stake in Rhapsody.

Spotify US thrown open: no invite required (Update)

Music fans that want to try Spotify before they pay for a premium account and couldn't get an invite before will be glad to hear that anyone can get on Spotify now. The only caveat to the free access is that it lasts six months and you have to sign in with your Facebook account to access the site. The six months is unlimited listening and apparently, you have to upgrade to the premium account after that time to keep the tunes going.

iTunes Match Beta released to developers

As part of Apple's new iCloud service is a feature called iTunes Match, which was first announced back at WWDC 2011. This feature will set Apple's cloud music service apart from competitors and has just been released in the latest iTunes 10.5 Beta 6.1 update to developers. The service should launch alongside iOS 5 and the iPhone 5 and/or 4S, both rumored for a September-October time frame.
