Pixar co-founder says smartphone, GoPro filmmaking are the future

Pixar co-founder says smartphone, GoPro filmmaking are the future

It’s already happening on a small scale, but mobile videography just got a huge nod from Pixar co-founder John Lasseter. Speaking on a panel for ‘The New Audience: Moviegoing in a Connected World’ to an audience at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Lasseter said smartphone videography and GoPros are the future of film making. Some films, like the independent ‘Romance in NYC’, have been filmed entirely on iPhone, and released into major film festivals; it’s likely just the start, too.

Jem and the Holograms trailer is just the worst

Jem and the Holograms trailer is just the worst

The first full-length trailer for the live-action movie Jem and the Holograms is released to mixed reviews. If you were looking for something Truly Outrageous, you might be in luck. For all the wrong reasons. What you're going to get isn't the cartoon version of Jem. You're not going to get something campy and fantastical. Instead you're just going to get Pitch Perfect again. Just in time for Pitch Perfect 2! And lucky you, this movie was given a budget of $5 million to shoot, shot as fast as possible, made into a Chick-Flick while its 80's-era partners are given more than 100x that budget.

Science Fiction: Roswell Alien Slides Debunked

Science Fiction: Roswell Alien Slides Debunked

Several sixty-year-old slides, recently claimed by their owner, Adam Dew, to be photos of aliens from Roswell, New Mexico, have been debunked. Just this past week, several people - citizens, UFO "believers" and even some so-called experts in the field - were invited to a New Mexico event to screen a documentary on the slides. As it turns out, the images show no more than the remains of a mummified child. The child currently resides in the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, after having visited San Francisco on temporary loan in the 1940s.

I was an Avengers’ Black Widow apologist before today

I was an Avengers’ Black Widow apologist before today

Last month I was an Avengers: Age of Ultron apologist for the likes of Black Widow (and to a lesser extent Hawkeye). I saw the press materials without the two of these folks, and I was with the camp that said the Main Men were More Marketable. They are, aren't they? Captian America, Thor, Iron Man, and The Hulk - they're all really recognizable. But to steal a toy from Our Lady Of The Kill - isn't that going too far? Captain America, can't you just let her have this one?

Avengers: Infinity War to be shot entirely with new IMAX 2D cameras

The movie “Avengers: Infinity War”, both the first and the second parts, will be filmed entirely using IMAX cameras, making them the first two movies to do so. The announcement came from IMAX today, which has revealed that the movies’ directors Anthony and Joe Russo will be using the recently revealed IMAX 2D digital camera. We’d previously heard that the Russos were slated to get access to the cameras, and that about 15 minutes of “Captain America: Civil War” will be filmed using them.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer rehashed in 16-bit stylings

Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer rehashed in 16-bit stylings

The Internet can’t get enough of modern media being turned into 16-bit masterpieces. We’ve seen numerous examples via the always wonderful (and somewhat disingenuously named) 8-bit Cinema, for example, and some have even taken to creating philosophy videos in fun pixelated stylings. It’s no surprise, then, that someone has created a rendition of the latest Star Wars movie’s trailer rehashed as a 16-bit video game, bringing back memories of playing Star Wars games on the SNES. Video after the jump!

Tom Hardy wants to play Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’

Tom Hardy wants to play Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’

It's no secret that some actors have pushed to take on the roles of iconic superheroes (and super villains), and now Tom Hardy can be counted among them. He has had many notable roles in popular movies over the years, and now he's pining for his own slot in the Marvel universe -- he will take just about anything he can get (within reason), it seems, but he is particularly interested in the role of "The Punisher", the anti-hero who brings about his own sense of justice to the streets.

Captain America: Civil War adds Martin Freeman to cast

Captain America: Civil War adds Martin Freeman to cast

Martin Freeman, perhaps best known in his role as Bilbo Baggins (or as Doctor Watson, depending on your tastes), has joined the cast of Marvel's upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Marvel announced the addition this afternoon, with the movie’s producer Kevin Feige praising the move. Freeman has a long list of movies and shows under his belt, and this latest one looks to be just as promising as the past Captain America movies. More on the news after the jump!

Indiana Jones movie confirmed as inbound

Indiana Jones movie confirmed as inbound

We’ve known for a while now that another Indiana Jones movie could come about. Back in February, for example, word surfaced that Steven Spielberg was interested in directing a new Indiana Jones movie, and some voiced hopes that Chris Pratt would take up the role previously held by Harrison Ford. Disney got the rights to the franchise back in 2013, and all signs have been pointing toward a future movie. Now word from Lucasfilm’s president has confirmed that we can expect a new film.

X-Men Days of Future Past: Rogue Cut detailed

Through Periscope, of all places, X-Men Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer announced the "Rogue Cut" of his most recent sci-fi film. This version of the movie will include a relatively major sub-plot that includes Rogue, one of the main characters in the first X-Men film. Anna Paquin will be featured in scenes that were filmed and produced to final-feature quality and (originally) cut at the last minute - or due to it being a bit of extraneous information, depending on who you believe, really.

LEGO Star Wars Death Star Final Duel revealed in full

LEGO Star Wars Death Star Final Duel revealed in full

To celebrate May the 4th, aka Star Wars Day, LEGO has revealed their next Star Wars themed set - Death Star Final Duel. This is the same set you may have seen shown at Toy Fair earlier this year as photographed by intrepid toy-goers - today we get to see it up close and personal. Of particular interest in this set is the fact that, for the first time in a LEGO Minifigure, Darth Vader's helmet comes in two parts. There's a life support collar below his head and a removable mask/helmet above.
