Google Teams Up With Sony Pictures, NBC Universal, And Warner Bros For YouTube Movies

Earlier a post on the YouTube blog by chief exec Salar Kamangar tipped that a major announcement would be revealed in a following post today involving the addition of new movie titles for rent on YouTube. And now it looks like all the details are coming in and its confirmed that Google has partnered up with Sony Pictures, NBC Universal, and Warner Brothers to bring 3,000 new full-length feature films taking their total rental catalog up to over 6000 titles. YouTube chief Salar Kamanger teased in a company blog post this morning that YouTube's movie rental service will soon be adding 3,000 new movie titles. The post mainly expressed their desire to become a destination for not only home-made videos, or those of your favorite YouTube stars, but also a place where you can now find big Hollywood movies. I am considered an oddity among some of my friends and family because I don’t have cable. I do have a TV, but I rely on DVDs, Netflix and my Roku player for my television viewing. When someone asks me if I’ve seen a commercial, I just smile and say “no”. In fact, my daughter (at 4 years old) was shocked the first time she watched Nickelodeon when the commercials came on. She had never seen one. But maybe my odd choice is becoming less odd. A new report by Nielsen shows that for the first time since 1992, there are less US households with television sets. To be sure, the vast majority of households still own TVs, but the percentage has gone from 98.9 percent to 96.7 percent. Part of the explanation is the economy, and the change to digital. But is there another explanation?

This most recent resurgence covers Panasonic's DMP-BDT350 (with full HD 3D), DMP-BDT300 (with full HD 3D), DMP-BDT100 (with full HD 3D), DMP-BD85, DMP-BD65, and DMP-B500 (the portable Blu-ray disc player). Starting November 24th, all of these devices will get complete access to the Vudu library - that is 4,000+ 1080p movies, all of them streaming, all of them promising to be totally frigging amazing.
