iTunes 1080p image quality near Blu-ray

Besides the new iPad, Apple recently announced a new Apple TV with support for 1080p content, which can now be downloaded from iTunes. This was a welcome upgrade from the 720p downloads it's been offering, but just how much of an improvement should we expect? And is the image quality boost worth it for ordering the new Apple TV? Netflix-cable company talks reportedly already happening

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has said he doesn't want to compete with traditional cable companies; he wants to compete with HBO. Not unintentionally, HBO has also been a target of traditional cable companies (with the exception of Time Warner Cable, whose parent company owns HBO). Fox, Warner, SanDisk, and Western Digital announce new ‘Project Phenix’ DRM

Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. studios along with storage device makers SanDisk and Western Digital have teamed up to announce a new "Project Phenix" (intentionally mispelled) initiative that's aimed at making high-definition digital movie content available across multiple devices. The new digital rights management (DRM) standard is the brainchild of the Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA) and is being developed to be compatible with UltraViolet so that users can download movie content from the cloud as well as transfer it via compliant storage devices to be played on approved TVs, tablets or other media players. Netflix Starz Play titles pulled from streaming

Starz is ending its streaming content contract with Netflix and will be yanking all of its Starz Play titles from the service in the very near future. Starz was one of the strongest Netflix content partners because it was able to bring Disney movies to the platform, as well as titles from Sony Pictures. However, because of the complicated licensing issues between Disney/Sony and Starz, and the agreements Netflix had with the Xbox 360, the companies involved started renegotiating their contract. German police raid Skyload.net and arrest owner

This is not a good time to own a file sharing site with any ties to piracy. German police recently shut down another European file hosting site called Skyload.net. In the raid, the alleged owner of the website was arrested along with a person who is said to have provided hosting services to the site. Apparently, the arrests are tied to an ongoing effort to capture everybody associated with Kino.to and shut down any site that is related to the movie streaming portal. Read The Full Story

Netflix on over 800 devices, usage on Smart TVs up

During Netflix's Q4 earnings call yesterday, CEO Reed Hastings emphasized the importance of mobile devices for the company, namely tablets, Apple TV and other connected Smart TVs. Although he didn't get into numbers, a recent Netflix job posting revealed that the service has been shipping on more than 800 different devices, a bit boost from the 450 or so devices six months ago.
