Netflix earnings fall though streaming grows

There's an odd set of numbers being posted today by Netflix as they report their earnings for the first quarter of 2012, including losses in DVD, gains in streaming, and a global revenue drop from this past quarter. There's always two (or more) ways to look at an earnings call, and this is certainly one for the books: $826 million in total domestic revenue for domestic sales only, this down from $847 million the quarter before and up from $706 million last year this same quarter. Netflix to stream Lilyhammer in the UK

Netflix isn’t just interested in the movie and TV streaming business: its ultimate goal is to bring original content to the internet too, almost like an additional channel. The company graced the United States with the Lilyhammer series a couple of months ago, and will be bringing the show to the UK and Ireland following a deal with the German distributor. MGM Movies come to YouTube and Android offering over 600 titles

Google has been looking to expand the movie and content options of both Android and YouTube for some time now. They've slowly been adding more and more options for their users but today just inked a deal with a big one. Netflix CEO blasts Comcast over net neutrality

Comcast has already taken some heat over its Xfinity streaming media service, which offers up movies and TV shows to Xbox 360 users without eating into the ISP’s 250GB data cap. At the time, Comcast say that they weren’t violating any net neutrality rules, claiming that the Xbox 360 streaming didn’t travel over the public internet. CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, doesn’t think too highly of Comcast’s move, and has criticized the ISP over the issue. Read The Full Story

Netflix spent $1 million on an algorithm it doesn’t use

You would think if a company spent $1 million on an algorithm to increase accuracy of its recommendation engine, the company would actually use that algorithm. That's not the case with Netflix though. After shelling out a million dollars to a developer team back in 2009 for an algorithm to increase the accuracy of its recommendation engine, the algorithm wasn't implemented. Netflix for Xbox 360 just received a decently large update this morning with some new features and changes that should make plenty users happy -- if you're an Xbox Live Gold member of course. Netflix increases wall between DVD and streaming

Netflix Facebook app illegal in the US

When Facebook first announced its Open Graph developer tool that allows users to share activities through Facebook apps, dozens of major brands and services were on board for the launch, including Netflix. However, since then Netflix has released its app to almost every country except the US. And the reason for this exclusion appears to be that an ambiguous privacy law created in the late 1980s could deem the app illegal here in the states. Read The Full Story
