When Dish Network purchased the ailing Blockbuster rental chain last year, it had planned to keep about 90% of the stores around the country open. That means that 10% of the stores fell under the knife straight away and were closed. Dish Network noted at CES that it was set to axe every one of the stores around the country not making money.

The move is no surprise, if the stories a money loser it has to go. Dish has said that is committed to keeping moneymaking stores open. Dish CEO Joe Clayton was mum on just how many of the Blockbuster stores were losing money and would be closed. He also offered no timeframe for the closings.

Interestingly, Clayton said that the Blockbuster locations that stay open will sell Dish Network service and could even provide support for TV customers in the area. That would be an interesting change; you could rent a movie and buy satellite service or get questions about the guide fixed.

Google added the ability to rent films to the Android Market for Android users in the US back in July. If you were outside the US, the only thing you could do was hack the app that plays the films to allow you to watch. If you aren’t the hacking sort, Google has now announced that movie rentals are officially available in the UK.

Movie fans in the UK will have 1,000 films to watch to begin with and they will start at a price of £2.49 each. For that price, the user will get 30 days to watch the film and the movie will be available on any connected device the user logs into. That means the user’s Android smartphone, tablet, and even the computer can be used to watch the movie.

Once the user starts watching a film, they get 48 hours to finish. If you don’t finish in the 48-hour window, you will have to pay again. This will let Google fight the new YouTube movie rental program that launched not long ago.

If you’re one of the 10 people in the world that actually simply rented a bunch of television shows from iTunes over the last year or so, you’re going to need a tissue. Apple has decided to pull the plug on all TV show rentals from iTunes, leaving only two options for the viewing of TV-related media: the purchase of individual episodes or the “Season Pass” for a year of your favorite show. This should come as no shock to the public, but does point toward a couple of future options for Apple as far as how they handle television content, the first being the relatively new “iTunes in the Cloud” service we first saw a few months ago.

The second option is of course the one that’s been proven successful since its inception: allowing users to pay for the show once and keep it forever. One of the two groups on board with the TV episode rental program’s 2010 price drop was Fox as owned by News Corp, (the other being Disney, a group which Steve Jobs is and was on the board of directors and is the company’s largest individual shareholder,) they recently noted the following about the now-axed rental program:

“After carefully considering the results of the rental trial, it became clear that content ownership is a more attractive long-term value proposition both for iTunes customers and for our business. To further enhance the value of ownership, we are working with Apple to make content available within their new cloud-based service.” – Fox

Meanwhile Apple has been watching the numbers, racking them all up on their abacuses, and have found that yes, indeed, users do not like to rent television shows. The following message comes from Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr speaking with AllThingsD:

“iTunes customers have shown they overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows. iTunes in the Cloud lets customers download and watch their past TV purchases from their iOS devices, Apple TV, Mac or PC allowing them to enjoy their programming whenever and however they choose.” – Tom Neumayr

What do you think? Will you miss your ability to pay an amount of cash to have a TV show for a set amount of time? Or are you more keen on paying JUST a bit more to keep that TV show forever?

Watching movies on-the-go for Android has been lacking compared to some of the competition. While Android has options such as Netflix that is getting updated often and Hulu, not all devices are supported and you still can’t save movies to watch later. In comparison iOS users can download digital copies right from iTunes with ease across multiple devices.

Android is seeing rapid growth with more than 550,000 devices activated daily and 20th Century Fox is looking to tap into that huge market and are aiming to bring digital downloads to all your Android devices. They are jumping aboard the Android train and will be offering Blu-ray titles with a digital-download for Android. We are hearing one of the first titles with the new option should be X-Men: First Class.

The digital copy will be downloaded right to your computer like the system already in place for Windows and users will be able to side-load the movie to any and all of their Android devices. Hopefully Android tablets are included but I can’t imagine them not offering it on those beautiful 1280×800 resolution displays. Users in the U.S., U.K. Germany and France will be among the first to access this new service.

This should be a huge boost for Android as far as movie options, with Netflix only supporting a small number of devices this could potentially be a large market and very successful for 20th Century. We should be hearing more regarding this soon so stay tuned.

If you’re not aware that Netflix is raising their prices in all sects, you’re not a Netflix customer. On the other hand, you’d have to not be Netflix customer to give a hoot what Blockbuster was doing with their video plans. But that’s just the plan Blockbuster has, to scoop up the Netflix customers who’ve recently left the movie rental group because of the rising prices they’ve recently revealed. What Blockbuster has here is a 30-day free trial of their normally $9.99 to $14.99 per month service known as Blockbuster Total Access.

What’s going on here is that, in the wake of Netflix raising their prices [like so], and you’ve just got to wonder – did they follow Don Reisinger’s advice? It’s the best possible idea, when you think about it, taking advantage of the massive group of people who may, with no other alternative realistically in sight, just start paying more for the same service they were already paying for in Netflix. But lo! Let us take a look at this deal.

The deals you’re about to see competing are thus: Blockbuster Total Advantage will run you $9.99 for the single-disk deal per month. This includes in-store exchanges, games for Xbox PS3, and Wii, Blu-Ray disks, and all new releases are available to you immediately. Netflix, starting on the first of September, will have a similar $9.99 deal, this one with no in-store exchanges (because it’s through the mail instead,) no video games, Blu-Ray disks, and an up to 28 day release delay for some movies from multiple studios.

And the deal, again, is that Blockbuster is offering this service for free for a month to folks who can prove they’re coming straight from Netflix. Hotness!

Now my question for you is thus: do you even have a Blockbuster around where you live? All the Blockbusters closed here in Minneapolis, never to be seen again. Good luck to you!

Blockbuster went into bankruptcy after its expensive rentals and high late fees helped to drive the average consumer to kiosk rentals and streaming services. Blockbuster was for a long time the biggest rental chain in the country and had multiple stores in many areas. The company isn’t alone, the entire DVD market is seeing profits drop. Blockbuster was recently purchased by Dish Network and the rental store has now announced some changes to their in store rental policies.

Blockbuster is lowering prices to appeal to users that have been renting elsewhere. As of May 27, the price of “thousands” of in-store movie rentals dropped to 99 cents per day. The price on new releases was also reduced. The new price is $1.99 for the first day and then 99 cents per additional day. The price of just released films will be $2.99 for day one and then 99 cents daily after.

Blockbuster is also offering a new unlimited movie rental plan that will run through July 4. With this plan, the user can come in, rent a $2.99 movie at the store, and then get another movie at $1.99 or less for the first day at no charge. When they return the free rental they can return to the store an unlimited number of times to get more free rentals. In theory, you could watch as many movies per day at $1.99 as you like, one flick at a time, until July 4.

The movie rental and sales market is taking a huge hit this year with DVD sales and rentals at big chains like Blockbuster falling down the rabbit hole. The movie market is seeing the same thing today that the music market saw years ago when digital tunes first started taking off. The desires and habits of consumers are changing whether the movie companies and rental chains like it or not. Consumers used to buy physical copies, and today many are choosing to stream.

DVD sales dropped 20% in the US over Q1 2011. Studios are blaming the timing of Easter and a bunch of movie release during the same time frame in 2010 for the decline in sales. The bigger picture shows something different than that in my mind. While the overall DVD sales market plummeted to $500 million under what it was last year, spending on streaming and subscription services grew significantly. These services grew to the tune of 33% during the quarter.

This is s a clear indication that consumers want digital movies. Those that don’t want digital films also are starting to prefer kiosk rentals with the rental of DVDs through outlets like Blockbuster dropped 36%. I think it’s time for the movie industry to stop trying to prop up the inevitable end of mainstream physical store rentals and end the wait periods for movies to hit kiosks like Redbox and digital rentals like PPV and Netflix. I would like to see a study on how many consumers simply don’t watch a film when they have to wait 30 days to rent at Redbox or see it on a streaming basis.

Netflix may be offering family plans with the option for multiple simultaneous streams later this year. A message lifted from Netflix’s investor relations FAQ page this morning seems to support speculation that the company is heading towards a more full on streaming model. They are looking into various service options to offer including one that encourages multiple accounts in one household.

Currently, Netflix offers a $7.99 streaming-only service that gives you one stream at a time or a one-DVD plan that offers unlimited streaming but doesn’t allow for multiple simultaneous streaming. However, they do offer multiple simultaneous streaming of up to four at a time with a four-DVD monthly plan.

Their new offering later this year may be to simplify things and focus on pushing households to sign up for either additional streams or multiple accounts under one umbrella family plan.

The Investors FAQ message reads:

The evolution toward individual memberships will take time, and we are still thinking about how to best do it. One option would be to allow an account to add additional concurrent streams (using the analogy of our DVD business, it would be like choosing a higher-priced plan that allows a subscriber to have more DVDs at home). Our $7.99-per-month plan is for one stream at a time, and later this year we expect to be able to offer consumers some account options to watch multiple simultaneous streams. Or it could be that there is a price point that would encourage multiple accounts in one household.

Netflix may also be looking beyond the household, hoping to boost individual memberships in the future as well. Individual plans could involve streaming content to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets along with having more social integration with Facebook. This may all be in the horizon for the company as they aim to ramp up their service with improved recommendations for a more personalized experience.

Brian Marshall, an analyst with Gleacher & Company, has come forward and put his two cents in as to how he believes Apple’s iTunes rental services compare to that of Netflix. Or, perhaps how they don’t compare. He published his note on Wednesday, pointing out sheer numbers in his comparison between the two services. Considering how popular Netflix is, and the fact that the company is now eyeing the possibility of an international roll-out of its services, perhaps the results aren’t too shocking.

Marshall says that, according to his research, Netflix serves up about 5 million downloads every day in rental form, while Apple is looking at 475,000 rentals through iTunes every day. Marshall notes that he believes that almost 90% of rentals through iTunes are of the .99 cent variety. While the rentals, which average about $2.99, make up about 75 percent of movie viewing.

Marshall also points out the pair of companies revenue based on the rental services. Netflix reported $553 million in revenue for the third quarter of 2010, while Apple rentals are estimated at $60 million per quarter.

Over the last year, every one of the Blockbuster locations in my town has gone out of business leaving one rental store for a town of around 100,000 people.

This is the reason why there are Redbox kiosks popping up all over the place. The last time I was checking a Redbox kiosk I noticed one single Blu-ray film in the library. Redbox has now announced that it is renting Blu-ray films with the price reportedly at $1.50 per night.

You can hop over to the Redbox Blu-ray page and put in your zip code to find kiosks in your area packed with Blu-ray titles. Too bad this will do nothing to get the flicks into the Redbox catalog faster.

As the internet grew in popularity, many movie fans changed to other delivery methods like Netflix and eventually streaming rentals.

Today Blockbuster is a shadow of what it was years ago. In its heyday, Blockbuster had six locations in my town of under 100,000 people and today there is not one single location left operating. Redbox and Netflix have all but killed Blockbuster.

One analyst believes that as early as next year we could see the end of Blockbuster altogether. Analyst Douglas A. McIntyre form 24/7 Wall St. has pegged Blockbuster as one of the ten national brands he expects to go under in 2011. Blockbuster is also reportedly mulling over a Chapter 11 filing to eliminate debt.

I have been irritated at the Hollywood studios for a while now when it comes to how they handle releasing DVDs. The problem is that some of the big studios won’t let kiosks like Redbox get the films on the day they launch. The big issue I take with that is it prevents me from seeing the films I want to rent.

In my town of 100,000 people, there is exactly one movie store left. It’s far from me and I won’t use it. All six of the Blockbuster stores and other major rental chains have closed their doors over the last few months. That leaves me with one Blockbuster kiosk and a hoard of redbox locations that I can rent movies from. If I can’t see a flick within the first week or so that it’s on DVD, I just don’t see it typically.

At least one studio has a bit of sense when it comes to how lots of us rent films today. Paramount Home Entertainment and Redbox have announced a new multi-year agreement that will have Paramount films landing in redbox kiosks on the day they titles launch for the sell-through market. It’s good to know that at least one studio doesn’t expect me to wait a month to rent a film with Redbox.

We’re sure you’ve fallen victim to it, at least a couple times. On your way out of the supermarket or Walmart, you see a giant red box, and it beckons you, like the bull to the red cape. And you realize too late that you suddenly want to watch a movie, almost like you’ve always wanted to watch a movie, but you just hadn’t realized it yet. Well, now it looks like Redbox is hoping you continue to fall victim to their wiles, but this time they want another dollar, so you can go home and play that copy of Tiger Woods you’ve been dying to play.

Out of the gate, Redbox is offering 24-hour video game rentals of minimal stock, for $2.00. It’s as easy to rent the games as it was the movies, but you shouldn’t expect to find a lot there. They are covering all of the major consoles though: Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and 3, the Nintendo Wii and DS(i), as well as Sony’s PSP. And while it may be fantastic to dream that the Redbox could some how deliver you your PSP Go! titles when it launches later in the year, that’s not likely.

For now, Redbox is keeping the video game distribution to Reno, Nevada for its test run. It’s not a surprise to us that Redbox is going this route, especially considering the population’s eagerness to rush into the digital media age. But, how long can they compete with other sources like Blockbuster, which offers a five-day rental of a game for only $9.00. And while many hail to GameFly’s library and pricing, they still cannot provide the sort of instant gratification that many want after making a purchase, especially with a video game.

So, how do we know this? Apparently, Blockbuster sent in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing yesterday that shows the company doesn’t feel they can stay in business. Their financial situation seems to be pretty dire, as they’re considering closing up shop.

Even though Blockbuster received a $250 million refinancing loan last week, they are still not sure if the transaction can be completed on May 11th as they may not qualify. A combination of online rentals, online streaming and the economy are believed to be the reason behind Blockbuster’s downturn.

What isn’t on Facebook these days? Well, it looks like now you can let your friends know what movies you’ve rented and watched too with the Netflix Updates application for Facebook. It’s a simple way to let people know one more thing about your personal life.

Whenever you get a movie from Netflix, the application will update your Facebook account with the news of a new film’s impending arrival. And when you get around to watching the flick, you can rate it and your friends can see what you thought of it.

It’s a pretty convenient way to keep track of what you’ve seen and what you thought of it and let people know about it all in one swoop. And don’t worry: if you don’t want people to know you rented Twilight again you can choose what your friends can and can’t see. The best part of this though is that your friends with Netflix can simply add movies that sound interesting on your news feed to their queues.

According to Neil Hunt of Netflix, they do not throttle their movie streaming service at all. Rather, the problem with connection speeds lies solely with the ISPs.

Hunt said that even though some users experience better downloads on their Xbox 360s than their PCs (or the other way around), there is no discrimination between the two formats. Some movies might stream slower than others, too. It all just depends on the current connection and if there’s congestion.

So, what was thought to be a big expose turned out to be nothing, really. But should we take their word for it? Or is their something devious afoot? I don’t think so, but what do you think? Since users pay to stream movies through Netflix, it wouldn’t make much sense to throttle, but I’d be interested in hearing your theories.

A recent Netflix survey has suggested the possibility of the company’s streaming DVD rental appearing on the Nintendo Wii. According to the survey, the system would require a “Netflix Instant Streaming Disc” – at a one-off cost of $9.99 – which would be loaded into the console whenever titles from the user’s Netflix subscription were to be streamed.

Obviously the user would have to already subscribe to Netflix as well as connect their Wii to the internet. It’s unclear whether subscribers would be able to search, add or queue titles directly from the Wii Netflix interface, or if that – like on many streamers - would have to be done on a separate PC. Considering the Wii has a browser, we’d presume you could manage the list directly from the console.

It seems a little churlish to ask for $9.99 for a software DVD when Nintendo and Netflix could potentially release a firmware update to enable the functionality, but functionality gift-horses should perhaps not be looked in the mouth. No official word from Netflix or Nintendo on whether this is destined to be a commercially-available service or merely survey fodder.

Apple have announced the addition of high-definition movie purchases to the iTunes store, building on the existing rental functionality. Now, as well as renting new-release HD movies for $4.99, users will also be able to buy them for $19.99. As of March 21st Twilight will be available to buy in HD, followed by Quantum of Solace on March 24th; there are already multiple titles in the back-catalog available to buy in HD.

Each purchase of an HD movie also comes with a standard-definition resolution file suitable for your iPod or iPhone. According to Apple, HD films will hit the iTunes store within 30 days of their general retail release.

It’s a nice development for anyone who relies on iTunes for all their legitimate downloads, but $19.99 seems like a whole lot to pay. No specific details as yet, but it seems fair to assume that the HD purchases will be 720p using H.264 compression, so unless they’re tremendously reluctant to go outside or order online and wait for delivery, most people will get better resolution for their money by picking up the Blu-ray version.

Just i thought Blockbuster’s Total Access is on to something with the upcoming video game rentals, apparent something is going away, and if you are a Total Access subscriber, i guarantee you wouldn’t be pleased. I got this email from Blockbuster today with an exciting header that reads “No More Due Dates for free in-store exchanges”! That’s a shocker! Now I can keep my Total Access’s in-store redeems for as long as I want? Heck yeah but Wrong! The Blue Envelop online rental is up to no good: Yes, there will be no time frame for in-store exchange but it will count as the regular rented item, in other words, the upcoming Total Access will entitle you to access both in-store and online movies, but not longer free. Shame on them to continue promoting “Free” In-store exchange. Read the new Total Access features after the cut.

Coming soon, there will be no more due dates for your free in-store movie exchanges!

In other words, as long as you are an active BLOCKBUSTER Total Access subscriber, you can keep your free in-store exchanges as long as you like.

In order to eliminate due dates, the free in-store exchange from participating BLOCKBUSTER® stores will now count towards the number of DVDs you may have out under your BLOCKBUSTER Total Access plan. Once you’ve returned your in-store exchange, we’ll then ship you the next available movie in your queue.

Your free in-store exchanges will now show up on your Queue page and in your Rental History, making it easy to keep track of the movies you’ve rented.

I’m on the verge of canceling my $34.99 per month Blockbuster Total Access, it’s the most pricey movie rental program on the market, and frankly, I haven’t got the time to watch a single movie from the last couple months. But the company announcement today of a pilot program might changed my mind; coming next quarter, they will add video game rentals to the Total access package for the expenses of $5 more.

Blockbuster Total Access allows online renters to either return movies (DVD and Blu-ray) through the mail or exchange them at its brick-n-mortar store for free movie rentals. Most of the plans are much expensive compare to Netflix, but the redeem part still hold some of the loyal customers from switching to the ‘Red Envelop’.

With the additional program, subscribers will soon be able to rent video games from the mail for their PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, as well as the Wii video game consoles. Currently, video game in store exchange is available for half-price, and it’s time sensitive, one has to return the rental in a specific time frame. The announcement also put Blockbuster leapfrog ahead of Netflix and GameFly, as they will be the only one that’s offering both video game and movie rentals from the mail.

The down side is you probably have to wait months to get a new hot release game out in the mail, I’m sure you been there. However, initial rollout will start in the second quarter of this year, and only available to limited number of subscribers. A full blown service may be available by the second half of the year. They must have thought of title availability, and will launch pilot program to test its response.

Word from the Roku forums is that the company has begun a private beta of their new Amazon Video-on-Demand (VOD) service. The update, which is believed to be included in version 2.0, will also seemingly bring YouTube access, at least according to this screengrab, where the YouTube logo is seen to the right of the Netflix logo.

Places in the private beta are currently all taken, and Roku are keeping quiet on when the eventual firmware upgrade that adds the Amazon access will be released. The last update, version 1.5, was released in late December 2008.

There’s also still no word on is whether the Amazon VOD service will be offering solely standard-definition content, or HD content. The option was tipped to be coming to TiVo devices back in December, but later denied.

After launching its first on-demand set-top box, which uses 2Wire’s streaming video player to offer instant movie download though TV set; Blockbuster teams up with Sonic Solutions to expand its video library and digital download services though a variety of consumer electronics devices.

The VOD expansion and company’s Movielink rental service are an effort to counter its rival, Netflix, in the increasingly popular online video rental and digitally download service. To be honest, it’s awfully crowded at this point. The addition of Sonic Solutions, which includes the established CinemaNow services and partners, would offer an instant boost of more than 10,000 premium films and 40,000 digital titles for rent and sale to PCs, Macs, handhelds, set-tops boxes, portable media players, Blu-ray disc players and Internet-connected TV sets.

The numbers of digital titles are far from reaching Netflix has to offer, not counting the availability of HD streaming contents such as Tivo boxes and Xbox 360, but Blockbuster is asserting on much refreshing title selections according to Tom Adams, of Adams Media Research.

“Blockbuster’s selection will be better than what Netflix is offering,”

I will give it a shot whenever Blockbuster decides to throw in free downloads for existing online rental customers. Some of us are paying $37 per month subscription after taxes!

Although just a rumor before, we can now confirm that Blockbuster will be building a set-top box that can stream movies to your TV in digital format. In fact, if all goes well, we can expect a release date sometime in the holiday season, which is swiftly approaching.

This new set-top box will be used in conjunction with the company’s Movielink rental service, though we’re not sure on specifics yet. However, the official announcement does point to the company becoming forward-thinking. It also appears to be an attempt to respond to the Roku player and the Xbox 360, both of which can stream digital movies. Along with the box itself, Blockbuster is also working on amping up support for streaming movies on IPTV hardware that have Intel chips inside.

It’s about time Blockbuster did something along these lines. The act of physically renting a movie has become less and less popular, so the set-top box idea was born more out of necessity than industry.

Netflix streaming multimedia players are heating up with HD content. Folk at Roku has revealed plan, at its public discussion forum, to deliver Netflix movies in HD by the end of year. Joining the recently announced Xbox 360, the soon-to-update Roku player will be the next Netflix Networked streaming player to support HD content.

Also revealed are updates to include an HD User Interface, new features and HD library with titles equal or better than Xbox has to offer. Bit rates specification is unclear for now but will be lower than Xbox version.

Compare to other Netflix friendly devices, the Roku player lacks the flexibility of gaming console Xbox 360, Tivo-experience DVRs and Blu-ray supports from Samsung standalones; but with the extended HD support, sub $100 open-source system may gain momentum to penetrate the niche Netflix movies streaming market.

First, let me apologize for our delay in responding to this thread. Typically we don’t comment on unannounced products and features, but clearly this is an important topic to you, our most loyal and involved fans. So, I’m pulling back the curtain a bit earlier than usual. Here’s the scoop…

Roku will be delivering Netflix in HD by the end of the year

Roku will be using Advanced Profile encodes which will deliver HD at substantially lower bit-rates than what Xbox is offering

The number of titles is up to Netflix but the library will be the same as or larger than the Xbox library

The UI will be updated to run in 720p and more covers will be visible on the screen at a time

And the release will include another major new feature that you’ll have to wait a bit longer to learn about

All of us at Roku truly appreciate your interest and support. We build these products for you and it’s hugely gratifying to get your feedback – even when you’re unhappy with us. We will continue to do everything we can to deliver the best content at the best value in the most consumer-friendly manner possible.

Thanks for your support,
Tim

Unfortunately for me, I got none of those. My movies rental service is solely sourced from Blockbuster. After the post-Format war, the company has done little to compete with its rivalry, Netflix; no additional services have been announced but they managed to raise the subscription fees to distance the competition. Go figure!

Three cheers to Xbox300 fanboys, the NXE will get revamp with new GUI and a surprised option with ability to stream 300 films in HD.

Early this year, Netflix has announced plan to increase Blu-ray titles and hinted the possibility of raising fees on monthly subscribers with Blu-ray renting option. The Blue-in-Red-Envelop subscribers are probably anxious to wait on the new rate, as if compatible to Blockbuster’s option. The company has formally notified its rental customers of a fees increment according to engadget and what a relief for BD-content renters! Begin at November the 5th, the company will only post a small sub-charge of a dollar + tax per month for subscribers with unlimited Blu-ray movies.

As you may know, Blu-ray movies are more expensive than standard definition movies. As a result, we’re going to start charging $1 a month (plus applicable taxes), in addition to your monthly membership charge, for unlimited access to Blu-ray movies.

The additional charge for unlimited Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after November 5th, 2008 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details. If you wish to continue getting Blu-ray movies for $1 a month more, you don’t need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account at the Netflix website.

If you have questions about this change or need any assistance, please call us anytime at 1-888-638-3549.

-The Netflix Team

Netflix strikes a three-year deal with Starz movie services provider to offer Starz movies available for online streaming. The agreement allows the World’s largest online movie rental service to add additional 2,500 Starz Play movies to its Video On Demands’ library of 12,000 movies and TV episodes.

Starz films are available at no additional cost to Netflix’s unlimited plans subscribers. Netflix unlimited plans start at as $8.99 as a month and they also have an opportunity to watch a live feed of the Starz TV network on their PCs. For now, customers can browse about 1000 Starz’s goodies and remain of the 1,500 tittles to follow soon.

Netflix’s streaming service is looking more attractive every day. They are adding significant selection of streaming contents at no extra cost; then you have the $99 compact Roku’s set-up, LG Blu-ray player and Xbox 360 to come this fall for hardware selection.

LOS GATOS, Calif. and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Oct. 1, 2008 – Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), the world’s largest online movie rental service, and Starz Entertainment, LLC, a premium movie service provider operating in the U.S., today announced an agreement to make movies from Starz, through its “Starz Play” broadband subscription movie service, available to be streamed instantly at Netflix. Access to the Starz Play service at Netflix will be included with Netflix members’ current monthly subscription fee.

The deal adds significantly to a growing library of over 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly at Netflix. Netflix members who have unlimited subscription plans, which start at only $8.99 a month, will have full and unlimited access to approximately 2,500 additional movies and other choices from Starz Play as part of their current monthly subscription. That includes the opportunity to enjoy a live feed of the Starz TV network on their PCs and does not impact the number of DVDs members receive as part of their monthly plans.

The first of the Starz titles – approximately 1,000 – are available now at the Netflix Web site, where they are presented in a distinct area accessible by clicking on the “Watch Instantly” tab on the Netflix member home page. More titles will be added in the coming weeks.

Starz Play, Starz’ collection of programming content for online distribution, features a wide variety of first-run hit movies, independent films and well-known movie classics, in addition to extreme sports, concerts, anime, Westerns and more. “Spider-ManTM 3,” “Ratatouille,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” “Superbad,” “No Country for Old Men” and “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert” highlight the movie offerings now available to be watched instantly. Starz Play also features new original content from Starz, including episodes of the upcoming dramatic series “Crash,” from the producers of the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture “Crash,” which remains the most-rented DVD in the history of Netflix.

Beginning today, Netflix and Starz Play will offer a sneak preview of the first full episode of “Crash” in advance of the Starz primetime premiere on October 17 at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. “Crash” will remain a staple in the Starz Play programming mix and new episodes will debut day-and-date with new episode premieres.

“The coupling of Starz Play with our growing library of streaming content is an important step forward for both companies and for consumer choice,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. “Our deal reflects the creative ways we are working with content partners to expand the profile and the number of choices our subscribers can watch instantly over the Internet, in addition to the 100,000 titles we offer on DVD through the mail.”
Netflix also said that as part of the deal it will offer a Starz Play-only subscription for $7.99 a month.

Honestly, I never heard of DVDplay before. A quick search at their web site reveals there are handfuls of DVDplay Kiosks at my local grocery stores. So the DVDplay is basically a movie rental Kiosk service and they have over 1400 stores nationwide. You can rent DVD by simply browse the titles at the screen and return it back within 24 hours for a small fee of $1 per rental. Nice! Now with Blu-Ray for a dollar is even better!

The $1 per rental is limited time promotion according to Home media Magazine. It starts tomorrow but no further information has disclosed when it would end.

I’m sucker when it comes to mail rental like Netflix, i like the idea of getting a fast and fresh rental when it comes to new releases; so I pay $37 per month for Blockbuster total access, but it is only good for per 3 rentals out at once. May be it is time I check out the movie Kiosk at grocery store. Selection may be limited, but save money in the long run.
