I am all for convergence, give me one device to take the place of several and I am a happy camper. I converged my printer and scanner years ago and more recently, most of us have converged our mobile phones, PMPs, and GPS devices into one smartphone.

Alienware is Dell’s gaming arm and the brand is typically associated with gaming notebooks and desktops more that it is with peripherals. That didn’t stop Alienware from unveiling a new line of gaming peripherals today including a new keyboard, headphones, LCD, and mouse.

If you’re a Windows desktop user who has been jealously eyeing up the multitouch trackpads available on various Windows and Apple notebooks, or perhaps prefer to use your laptop with an external keyboard but miss the multi-finger functionality, then Brando’s latest product may be for you.  Their USB Multi-Touch Smart Pad does exactly what it says on the tin: recognize all the usual multi-finger gestures such as pinch-zoom and rotate.

Razer

Over at Cologne, Germany, Gamescom is going strong, and companies like Razer are not letting the time slip by without some kind of announcement. In the case of Razer, they had a doozie lined up for this conference: a 17-key mouse, that looks like some kind of futuristic toy, which is called the Naga. It’s set to be used for Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games, but as you can probably already assume, it’s tailored for the largest of them all, World of Warcraft.

Should someone stage an intervention at Logitech?  The company has unveiled yet more new mice, and while we realize that a healthy stream of peripherals is the bread & butter of their business, the recent flood seems to be getting a tad extreme.  Still, today’s new wireless pointers – the Logitech Performance Mouse MX and the Anywhere Mouse MX – do at least bring something nifty to the table: “Darkfield Laser Tracking“.

Logitech have outed another desktop keyboard and mouse combo, and this time they’re claiming good old fashioned comfort and productivity rather than bizarre ergonomics.  The Logitech Wireless Desktop MK700 consists of a low-profile keyboard with integrated LCD status display, and a wireless mouse with frictionless scroll-wheel.

You know who likes money?  Razer likes money, and the gaming peripheral maker has decided that the best way to make it is to milk enthusiastic StarCraft II gamers with a range of new hardware and this “distinctive” messenger bag.  As well as the bag, the company promises a tournament-grade keyboard, mouse and headset “specially designed” for Blizzard Entertainment’s StarCraft II.

In an announcement made today by Microsoft Hardware, the Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5000 made its debut, touting Microsoft’s BlueTrack technology and an ergonomic layout with a six-degree curvature that promotes natural wrist positioning, which should make all those long nights on the keyboard a little less painful.

The weekend is here again fellow geeks and geekettes so I am back with another week in review. Monday more rumors surfaced that has Apple launching that long anticipated tablet device this November. The rumors further claim that the tablet will be aimed at gaming and media use. Early this week Verizon cut the pricing on all its smartphones save a few of the new ones to $99. That makes us think lots of new smartphone hardware is on its way.
