SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 5, 2012

, Oct 5th 2012 Discuss [0]

We've arrived at another Friday evening, which means that the weekend lies ahead. Today, as many of you probably already know, was the one-year anniversary of the passing of Steve Jobs. Apple paid tribute to Jobs in a new video released today, and it was announced that three modified MacBook Pros will be auctioned off in memory of Jobs. On the lighter side of things, Lenovo is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ThinkPad with a look back through time, and Samsung's profits for Q3 2013 managed to break company records (not an easy thing to do, considering how popular Samsung is). Motorola beats back Microsoft in latest Android ban attempt

Motorola has fended off a patent lawsuit from Microsoft, with the Google-owned smartphone company convincing a German court that its devices do not infringe IP around bridging a device's radio and apps. The patent, "Method and radio interface layer comprising a set of application programming interfaces (APIs)," was infringed by Motorola's Android devices in how they access contacts entries and other elements, Microsoft argued, but the lower regional court of Mannheim decided it disagreed. Present-day smartphones have fewer toxic chemicals, study finds

, Oct 3rd 2012 Discuss [0]

Most of us (hopefully) know that our smartphones aren't just snazzy glass, aluminum, and plastic, and that there are actually some hazardous materials lurking on the inside. The components of most smartphones are made using nasty stuff like PVC, mercury, tin, flame retardants, and lead, and though those chemicals and metals don't pose much of threat to you while they're all locked up inside your device, they could potentially contaminate the air and water if smartphones aren't disposed of properly. Motorola drops ITC lawsuit against Apple

, Oct 2nd 2012 Discuss [0]

Well over a month ago, Motorola filed a bunch of patent infringement claims against Apple with the International Trade Commission (ITC), and wanted an import ban on virtually all Apple products including Macs, iPhones and iPads. However, Motorola has withdrawn the lawsuit entirely without an explanation. The company says that no agreement has been reached with Apple, so we're left scratching our heads. Read The Full Story

Yesterday we talked about a huge hack that made its way to some Samsung devices, in which visiting a link that contained a line of malicious code would automatically send your phone into factory wipe mode without it being stopped. However, it looks like this hack isn't just isolated to Samsung devices. It turns out the hack was able to be replicated on HTC, Motorola, and Sony devices as well. Read The Full Story

Welcome to Thursday evening folks - just one more day until the weekend is officially here. iOS 6 has been out for a little more than a day now, and while there are a lot of new features to get excited about, Apple's new Maps app seems to be spoiling the party.
