Apple asks to appeal patent-infringement case against Google

It looks like Apple is looking to stir up some old issues with Google. Apple has asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington to reinstate the patent-infringement claims it had filed against Google's Motorola Mobility unit. Apple stated that Google, and several companies, infringed on its touch-screen patents. Apple said that the touch screen was the key aspect that "drove the iPhone phenomenon and later the iPad." ComScore: Samsung rises as Android falls

This month's ComScore results for Smartphone Platform Market Share and Smartphone OEM Market Share show first that Apple is rising while Android falls. That much is easy to see as the three-month average ending in January of 2013 is compared to the three-month average ending in October 2012 in the Smartphone Platform arena - Apple rose 3.5 percent in the market while Google (with Android) fell 1.3 percent. Next you'll find that in the Top Smartphone OEM list for those same two three-month periods, both Apple and Samsung grew - at the expense of HTC, Motorola, and LG. Read The Full Story

Google CFO discusses reports of Samsung/Google conflicts

There has been various reports about Google and Samsung's relationship being on the rocks due to Samsung's increasing success. The reports say that Samsung's dominance in the Android market had Google concerned about the future between the two companies. Motorola’s device pipeline isn’t wow, says Google CFO

The Motorola Defy XT that Republic Wireless sells has a hybrid technology that allows users to make calls or texts though their Wi-Fi network, similar to that of T-Mobile’s Wi-Fi calling. Motorola Solutions has announced its AME 2000 device, an Android-based system designed for government and enterprise users who require data security. The Assured Mobile Environment solution utilizes a COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) device to provide end-to-end data and voice encryption. 13 Motorola patents against Microsoft invalidated

In what is a large blow to Google, a federal judge has invalidated 13 Motorola patent claims against Microsoft in what has been an on-going legal spat between the two companies. The claims concern a total of three patents that deal with a video codec standard, with Microsoft having had requested their invalidation based on a patent law, something the court ultimately agreed with. Watch out Google: Samsung’s Galaxy brand has eclipsed Android

It would appear that the Samsung brand push of the name "Galaxy" associated with their Android-toting smartphones and tablets is working so extremely well that this week the hardware name has become more popular than the software. Having a peek at the findings analyst Benedict Evans has found with a few search term trends in Google's own search engine, it's made clear that as the Android search term has risen, so has the term Galaxy. Motorola X-Phone pops up in job listing

We've heard plenty of rumors about the Motorola X-Phone, but it seems that Motorola itself just confirmed the device. Motorola has a job listing for a Senior Director of Product Management up on LinkedIn, and in the job listing, it refers to the X-Phone by name. Google CFO: “12 to 18 months of product pipeline” with Motorola

This week after Google’s quarterly earnings statement for their financial Q4 2012, the company’s Senior Vice President and CFO Patrick Pichette made it clear that their still relatively new ownership of Motorola includes no less than 12 months of product pipeline put in place before they got there. This means that while Google may very well be working to push Motorola in new directions in the future, it’ll be a while before they’ve worked through the products Motorola already had prepared before they arrived. At the moment, Google has completed 120 days of ownership (or so) of Motorola – so there’s quite a bit left to go.

Welcome to Thursday evening folks. Today we heard that Samsung may use MWC 2013 to unveil a new Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet, which is certainly exciting to say the least. According to new rumors, Verizon may be shipping the Samsung ATIV Odyssey on January 24, while a new Apple job listing suggests some major Siri improvements coming in the future. Instagram said today that it has 90 million monthly active users who are uploading 40 million photos per day, and even though Intel's earnings for Q4 2012 were down, the company still managed to pull in $13.3 billion in revenue.
