The time has come. Motorola owners can rejoice because developers have finally unlocked the bootloaders to a good number of Motorola’s devices. So far, it’s been confirmed that the DROID RAZR HD, DROID RAZR MAXX HD, DROID RAZR M, and Atrix HD are all able to have their bootloaders unlocked. It was Dan Rosenberg who accomplished the impossible, and the method was tested out by two other developers to confirm its validity.

Unfortunately, older Motorola devices, specifically the OMAP-based Motorola devices will be unable to take advantage of this new discovery. This means that those of you with the DROID BIONIC or the DROID RAZR XT912 are out of luck. Also, DROID RAZR HD owners, steer clear from the Android 4.1.2 OTA update that began rolling out a couple of weeks ago. Updating to 4.1.2 may ruin your chances of unlocking your bootloader via this method.

Unlocking your device’s bootloader will most likely void your warranty, but most of us understand the risks, and most of us are willing to take those risks if it means finally being able to customize our devices with no inhibitions. Motorola is the most strict about locking down their devices, and many Motorola users have been agonizingly waiting for this day to come.

While the method has been tested and proven to work, we will still have to wait until the unlocking method becomes available to the public, so stick around. With this new method, Motorola phones have just gotten a whole lot more attractive. The devices have great hardware, but unfortunately, it was the software that was holding them back. Be sure to check out our reviews for both the DROID RAZR M and DROID RAZR HD to see what these devices can do.

Keeping up with their promise from Friday, Motorola and Verizon have begun rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. Over-the-air update notifications are slowly hitting users’ devices, and new RAZR owners will finally be able to experience Project Butter, Google Now, and ISIS enhancements.

While Verizon simply said that update would hit sometime this week, we’re glad it’s happening first thing rather than later in the week on a Thursday or Friday. Either way, Verizon is pushing out the update “in phases,” so be patient if you haven’t yet seen the update hit your notification tray — it will come!

The Jelly Bean update comes with Google Now, which offers a Siri-like voice search experience that we really like, as well as Project Butter, which adds a layer of virtual butter to the user interface to make it snappier and smoother to navigate, as well as make it quicker to open up apps and switch between them effortlessly.

The DROID RAZR HD comes with a 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display and runs on a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 1GB of RAM. While the 2530mAh battery may be plenty for most users, Motorola launched the RAZR MAXX HD, which is practically identical to the RAZR HD, except for the larger 3300mAh battery for those who really want to last all day long.

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about a Jelly Bean update for the DROID RAZR HD series, but Verizon has announced today that Motorola‘s newest RAZR devices will receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean starting next week. The rollout will happen in phases, so if you don’t see your update the same time as someone else, be patient.

The Jelly Bean update is coming to Motorola’s DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. Verizon promised that the update would come to the new handsets back in September when they were originally announced, so it’s nice to see that they’re keeping up on their promises. On top of what users will get with Android 4.1, Verizon says that the update will also offer improved voice and data connectivity, better native calendar settings, and updated versions of all of Verizon’s preloaded apps.

The new DROID RAZR M received the update a couple weeks ago already. That device has a 4.3-inch qHD display with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and 1GB of RAM. The DROID RAZR HD has a little more oomph to it, thanks to a larger 4.7-inch screen with a 1280×720 resolution. It also has the 1.5GHz S4 chip with 1GB of RAM, and the RAZR MAXX HD comes with a larger 3300mAh battery for those who yearn for better battery life.

Owners of the RAZR HD and MAXX HD should get a notification on their devices when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed. Those who are lucky enough may even see the update as soon as Monday, but don’t be surprised if you don’t end up with it until later in the week.

Gadgets are an unfortunate mix of expensive and fragile, with the wrong jostle, bump, or drop potentially sending your smartphone or tablet into an early grave. OtterBox creates a variety of cases designed to prevent these unfortunate incidents including the Defender Series. As of today, you can now pick up DS case for your Galaxy Tab 2 and Droid RAZR HD.

The OtterBox Defender Series cases feature triple-layer defenses against the many perils that can threaten your gadgets. Each case has a built-in display protector, as well as a mid-layer made from polycarbonate and an outer layer made from silicone. These layers are designed to protect smartphones and tablets from shocks and drops, and to keep dirt and debris out of the devices’ various ports.

Also released is the Commuter Series case for the RAZR HD and the RAZR MAXX HD. The Communter Series case is similar to the Defender Series, offering a screen protector, mid-layer composed of silicone, and an outer-layer made of “strong polycarbonate.” Neither the Defender Series, nor the Commuter Series are waterproof, however.

Back when Motorola announced the DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR M, it made a commitment to upgrading the majority of its phones to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. When it made this commitment, the company said that it would give users who didn’t get updated $100. Naturally, no one was expecting Motorola to upgrade all of its handsets to Jelly Bean, and today, the company revealed a list of phones that will qualify for the $100 rebate.

However, there’s a bit of a catch. Motorola isn’t just going to give you $100 because your phone isn’t receiving Jelly Bean, after all. In order to get that money, you’ll need to trade up to one of six recently-release Motorola phones. The handsets you’ll need to trade up to include the Atrix HD, DROID RAZR MAXX HD, DROID RAZR M, DROID RAZR HD, Electrify 2, or PHOTON Q. As you can see from the list posted below, quite a few Motorola phones qualify for the promotion.

Those devices that qualify include the original Electrify, the Atrix and the Atrix 4G, the DROID 3, and the DROID X2. If you don’t see your device on the left side of the list, it seems that you can expect an update to Jelly Bean at some point in the future. Motorola has set up a page on its site for interested users looking to take advantage of its trade up program.

Of course, it’s important to remember that if you’re currently on contract, early termination fees will still apply if you decide to get a new phone through Motorola’s trade up promotion. Essentially, you can look at this as a $100 rebate on an upgrade to a phone that will have or will be getting Jelly Bean, rather than getting $100 in cash as an apology for not getting an upgrade to Android 4.1. Will you be taking Motorola up on its $100 rebate offer, or will you be sticking with your current phone now that we know all of the details?

Welcome to Thursday evening, everyone. This afternoon we had a bunch of quarterly reports hit, and some were better than others. Google posted its quarterly report a little prematurely, a blunder that had a hand in driving down the price of the company’s stock. Later on in the day, we heard from Microsoft, which managed to do pretty good in its first quarter. Sadly, AMD posted its results for quarter 3 just a little while ago, and things aren’t looking too good for the company – in fact, it says that it will have to layoff around 15% of its workforce in an attempt to save some money.

Moving away from that rather depressing news, we heard some more whispers about the different iPad Mini variants today, and Google announced a brand new Samsung-made Chromebook (that’s super cheap, too!). The controversial Copyright Alert System is said to be going live in the next few weeks, and today AT&T released a statement in which it objects to SoftBank’s planned buyout of Sprint. Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom has started a new file sharing site, and we learned that Apple may just be looking to buy the talent behind the soon-to-be-shutdown Color app, rather than the whole thing.

comScore says that the Amazon Kindle Fire has the highest readership rates for digital content, and today was the day the Motorola RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD launched at Verizon. Twitter is ruffling some feathers with the way it censors content, and TweetBot landed on the Mac App Store with a pretty high price tag. Chevrolet announced today that it will be unveiling the 2014 Corvette on January 13, while Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said that his company is ready to compete if Microsoft launches a Surface-branded smartphone. Researchers are considering launching a probe to a recently-discovered exoplanet, and Caldexa said that it has plans to begin using 64-bit ARM chips in 2014.

New rumors are pegging AMD with an itch to drop prices on APU Llano chips, and beloved digital distribution site GOG added support for Mac today with the addition of 50 games. Battlefield 3: Aftermath will be available for PS3 Premium subscribers on November 27, so get ready to battle on a handful of new maps that have been decimated by an earthquake. Finally tonight, we have a number of original articles for you to take a look at, as Chris Burns compares the RAZR MAXX HD and RAZR HD side-by-side in a new hands-on article. Chris also gave us his review of the MAINGEAR Potenza, and we ask if picking up the new $249 Chromebook is a good idea for students. One last thing to note before we go – we’ve released version 2.0 of our iOS app, making it compatible with the iPhone 5′s larger screen. You can get it right this minute from the iTunes Store by clicking this [download link]! Enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Today’s the day that Verizon is finally releasing a couple of new DROID RAZR handsets from Motorola. We told you a week ago that the carrier would be outing them today, and they obviously kept up on their promise. Both phones are available for purchase at Verizon’s website or any one of their brick-and-mortar establishments across the US.

The DROID RAZR HD will come with 16GB of internal storage and you can choose between either black or white. The DROID RAZR MAXX HD will come with 32GB of internal storage, but will only come in black. The RAZR HD will the cheaper of the two, costing $199 after a new two-year contract, and the RAZR MAXX HD will fetch for $299.

While both devices are almost identical to one another, the RAZR MAXX HD has a larger battery that’s able to last for up to 32 hours of normal use according to the specs. Both devices feature a 4.7-inch AMOLED HD display with a 1280×720 resolution, while a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM are on the inside.

Verizon had a decent Q3 this year, selling almost 7 million smartphones. With the launch of these new DROID RAZR handsets, the carrier might be looking forward to another good quarter coming up, especially with the holiday season just right around the corner. Check out our full review of the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and take a look at our hands-on of the DROID RAZR MAXX HD to learn more about both devices.

Welcome to Tuesday evening everyone. Today was a pretty big day as far as news goes, with Apple sending out invites to an upcoming event, which is where we’re assuming the company will announce the iPad Mini. Not one to be outdone, Microsoft finally gave us some substantial details on Surface today (including information on pre-orders), and Samsung was right there to put its line up of new Windows 8 PCs and tablets up for pre-order as well.

We heard that there could be as many as 24 different iPad Mini models when Apple finally gets around to revealing the device, and we got to see the insides of the new iPod Nano thanks a teardown from iFixit. Excited for the Padfone 2? If you are, you’ll be pleased to know that its tablet dock can stand up to some abuse. We found out that Intel’s Q3 profits were negatively influenced by slowing demand for PCs, and heard that the average screen size is on the rise for all types of devices except for “mobile PCs.”

A mysterious Texas Instruments-made chip was found lurking inside Apple’s Lightning cable today, and Verizon is catching some heat for monitoring user activity.

With Verizon’s next in an ever-expanding line of RAZR devices here with the Motorola DROID RAZR HD we’re getting essentially the same experience as we did with the RAZR M, except this time it’s quite a bit larger. With a 4.7 inch Super AMOLED display on top of a dual-core processor from Qualcomm, it’s not just the screen we’re impressed with. This device brings on one of the most refined Motorola experiences we’ve seen thus far, matching at least the impression we’ve had with the M, and out-doing it for the large-display-lovers.

Hardware

This device presents the same greatness we saw with the DROID RAZR M with enhancements well surpassing the original DROID RAZR as it was presented many months ago. With the RAZR branding we’ve got a certain amount of excellence that Verizon and Motorola have to live up to, and with the RAZR HD they’ve certainly done it. The display is a massive 720 x 1280 pixels spread across 4.7-inches of Super AMOLED screen, that ringing in at 312 PPI dense. That’s above the Galaxy S III (306 PPI) and just under the Galaxy Nexus (316 PPI) – have a peek at the S III next to the RAZR HD here, bright as they can be.

The front of the device is also covered by a single sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass for maximum protection against scratches and dings. It sits inside a slight rim around the edge that keeps your thumb inside the bounds of the display and makes for an interesting – and unique – feel to the whole device. This rim is hard plastic and will be the same color as whichever color device you so choose – we’ve got white, here. Below that is a ring of metal – aluminum more than likely – then a full back panel made from the same kevlar-weave that each of the previous DROID RAZR devices have had.

This back panel takes over the entirety of the back of the device instead of just sitting inside a pocket as previous DROID RAZRs have, this letting us know that they trust the design now well enough to command the device. It’s a good decision in this case, as the whole smartphone feels comfy to hold and to work with – not to mention hardcore. The front of the smartphone feels a bit fragile only because glass has traditionally been a material that breaks – but with Gorilla Glass sitting here instead, the whole device is tough enough to take a few bangs.

The interior of this device is splash-coated (protected from moisture, that is) as each of the DROID RAZR smartphones have been, and the SIM and microSD slot is kept secure with a pin. With the pin tool you get with the phone (in the box) you can push out (or pull, however you see it) the drawer where you can replace at will. This device has 12GB of storage inside and a microSD slot capable of working with another 32GB of space.

At a slightly massive 131.9 x 67.9 x 8.4 mm, this device would be relatively difficult to hold if it were made of the same slippery materials that the LG Optimus G is – but it’s not. Motorola’s choice to buck the trend of glossy plastic and glass backs on devices makes the RAZR HD an easy to handle unit.

Software

With the RAZR HD we’re getting essentially the same experience we did with the RAZR M in the software department. Same Android version (4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich), same Motorola software modifications, and nearly the same set of applications. Verizon and Motorola (and Google) have clearly agreed here to present a single family feel with the RAZR releases they’ve got on deck this season. Have a peek at our full DROID RAZR M review for another look at how this family functions.

Have a peek at our hands-on with the RAZR HD to see how similar these devices truly are, right down to the speed at which they flip back and forth between home screens. They’re using the same processor too, mind you; the dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. This is the next-most-powerful Qualcomm processor on the market this Autumn, with the most powerful sitting pretty in the LG Optimus G with four cores instead of two.

You’ve once again got some cool modifications to Android 4.0 starting with Quick Settings that appear all the way to your left alongside your home screens. You’ve also got Smart Actions, a feature that activates certain tasks based on the time of day, your GPS location, or your power level. You’ll have ICS’s Face Unlock as well as a modified unlock screen with Camera, Phone, Texts, and standard to keep you quick. Have a peek at a few benchmark results here as well to see how the Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor performs.

Camera

This device works with an 8 megapixel shooter on the back that’ll keep you in the high definition business, especially since you’re working with a Qualcomm processor that comes with dedicated architecture made specifically for image processing. Here we’ve got a set of photos and a video that’ve been captured with the standard camera for you to glance at and decide for yourself. This device also had a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front for video chat and a single LED flash on the back for photos in the dark.

We’ve also got a couple of nice examples of panorama and HDR modes, both of them able to be expanded at a click here and in the larger gallery at the bottom of this post. The gallery at the bottom of this post also has additional shots for you to peruse.

Battery

Like each of the other devices we’ve tested running the Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, the battery life you get here really depends on how you’re using the device. If you do nothing but run streaming video over Verizon’s 4G LTE data network, you’ll get a few hours out of it. If you’ve got your display on auto brightness and are only checking email, browsing the web, and using Facebook all day long, you’ll have at least 8 hours at your disposal – at least. For those of you needing more than you get here, there’s always the MAXX version of the smartphone with just a bit more bulk on the back in exchange for a much larger battery.

Notice how the battery life basically flatlines when you’ve got the display off? It’s the display that takes up most of your power here – especially when you’re blasting at full brightness.

Wrap-up

Here we’re working with another winner, with Motorola making full use of their new partnership (ownership) with Google in many fine ways. You can see that this device (as well as the RAZR M, for example) are not the same DROID devices we saw a couple years ago. Here we’ve got a fine example of an Android-running smartphone, to say the least. The hardware is top-notch, the camera takes rather nice photos, and the processor is powerful enough to take on the highest-quality games and apps the Google Play app store has to offer.

The device is also nice to hold, has a bit of grip to it so you wont be losing it right out of your palm any time soon, and looks pretty darn fine too. Be sure to let us know if you’ve got any questions about the device that haven’t been addressed in the review above, and make sure you let us know if you end up picking it up at Verizon soon!

Welcome to Thursday evening, folks – just one more work day and the glorious weekend is here once again. This afternoon we heard that both the iPad Mini and the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro – neither of which officially exist yet, remember – have been delayed due to problems with component yields, but not long after, analysts were saying that the MacBook Pro with Retina Display is still on track to launch this year. Apple has managed to delay the ban of the iPhone and iPad in South Korea, and we learned that the company’s new dock connector is nearly impossible to mod in a new teardown.

If you’ve been waiting for either the DROID RAZR HD or the RAZR MAXX HD, good news: you’ll be able to pick them up from Verizon in just one short week. The Samsung Galaxy S III Mini was officially unveiled today, though its specs aren’t much to write home about, and we learned that the sales ban on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has been lifted. Google boss Eric Schmidt expects Android to hit 1 billion activations within the next year, and today Sprint confirmed that it has been in buyout talks with SoftBank.

Apple has released a new iPod ad called “Bounce,” while Nokia was busy delivering prices for its Lumia 920 and 820 accessories in the UK. Apple was awarded an interesting new patent today, and Verizon says that it will keep its 2G/3G service active until at least 2021. Today Acer revealed both the new M5 and V5 lines of Windows 8 notebooks, and we heard that at one point, Nokia was planning to bring an N9 MeeGo tablet to Verizon.

Facebook is looking to improve its apps with stricter Open Graphs policies, and Gearbox announced a new DLC pack for good ol’ Borderlands 2 today. Ubisoft delivered a new trailer showing off the weapons in Assassin’s Creed III, while a new compilation called the Rockstar Games Collection: Edition 1 was announced. Anonymous has apparently gone to war with Facebook, bringing down the social network across Europe today, but thankfully it seems that things are slowly coming back online. Finally tonight, we go hands-on with both the Huawei Ascend D Quad XL and SHADOWGUN: DEADZONE‘s new multiplayer beta, while Chris Burns tells us why the Galaxy S III Mini represents a missed opportunity for Samsung. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, go out and enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

Just yesterday we posted news that Motorola’s DROID RAZR HD arrived in Canada for Rogers Wireless customers, and it was only a matter of time before we saw the phone arrive state-side on Verizon. Exactly one week from today, on October 18, Motorola’s DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD will officially be available at Verizon stores across the US.

The DROID RAZR HD will come with 16GB of internal storage and will cost $199.99 in either black or white. The DROID RAZR MAXX HD will cost $299.99 and come with 32GB of internal storage, but will only come in black. So, just like Henry Ford once said, you can have the RAZR MAXX HD in any color you want, as long as your favorite color is black.

Both phones are practically identical save for the battery. The MAXX has a larger-capacity battery that’s able to last for up to 32 hours of normal use. Both devices feature a 4.7-inch AMOLED HD display with a 1280×720 resolution. On the inside is a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM.

Both the DROID RAZR HD and the MAXX HD are extremely thin and lightweight, thanks to the unique kevlar fiber backing on both devices, which also makes them more durable and rugid than most smartphones on the market. To see more photos of the two devices and even a video that shows them both in action, check out our hands-on session.

RIM is trying to lure developers into BlackBerry 10 with a new “$10K Developer Committment,” in which RIM says it will give developers $10,000 if their app reaches $1,000 in sales. RIM also opened up app submissions for BlackBerry 10 developers today, and we heard that the rumored LG Nexus 4 smartphone may be making its debut on October 29.

Today’s Canadian launch of the DROID RAZR HD suggests that we may soon see it launch in the United States, and NASA’s new satellites that are powered by the HTC Nexus One will be heading into space next year. Earlier today we heard that Microsoft Office will be coming to Android and iOS next year, but it wasn’t long after that rumor hit before Microsoft was saying that there wasn’t any truth to it. Gearbox said today that the freshly-released Mechromancer DLC and the rank reset bug in Borderlands 2 have nothing to do with one another, while we learned that Wing Commander designer Chris Roberts is making a new space MMO.

Dishonored developer Arkane Studios said today that it wasn’t pressured by Bethesda to include multiplayer in the game, while Rovio released a brand new Bad Piggies-themed update for Angry Birds. A new Twitter study gives us a much closer look at the differences between male and female tweeters, and TweetDeck has been updated with a new theme and adjustable fonts. Finally tonight, we have a pair of original articles and a review for you to look through. He also gave us a review of the new Lenovo IdeaTab A2109, so be sure to have a look at that.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, so go out and enjoy the rest of your night folks!

After numerous rumors and leaks throughout August, Motorola finally announced and unveiled its new DROID RAZR lineup last month, which included the new DROID RAZR HD. However, they were a little shy on some details — mainly availability and pricing. However, Canadian wireless carrier Rogers just announced the device for use on their network, which means we may see the device jump over the border shortly.

The DROID RAZR HD comes packing with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. It also comes with an 8MP rear camera that offers zero shutter lag and burst mode. The phone sports the signature Kevlar design of other RAZR devices, making the phone lighter and more durable, while keeping it thin.

What makes the device really stand out, though, is its HD display that it touts in its name. It’s a quite remarkable 4.7-inch AMOLED HD display that has a 1280×720 HD resolution. The device also packs in 4G LTE and runs off of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but it’s expected to get a Jelly Bean update fairly soon.

Along with the DROID RAZR HD, we also might see its close brother, the DROID RAZR MAXX HD, hit Verizon around the same time. Obviously, we’re still not sure what the timeline is for an American launch of these devices, but in the meantime, check out our hands on of the DROID RAZR HD and the MAXX HD to get a better idea of the two phones.

The RAZR HD from Rogers is available today and pricing starts at $99.99 after a 3-year contract, or you can pay a full $599.99 for the device without a contract.

We’re getting ready to wrap-up coverage for this Wednesday, and what a day we had. First up we had Nokia’s highly-anticipated Windows Phone 8 event, where it revealed both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. There was a lot to take in during the event, and you can find everything you need to know in our Nokia wrap-up. It’s there that you can check out product announcements and hands-on posts with Nokia’s new devices, so be sure to give it a look.

After we had finished up with Nokia’s event, it was straight over to Gotham Hall, where Motorola and Google held an event of their own. Google’s Eric Schmidt took the stage first to boast the latest Android numbers, before Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside hopped up on stage to outline the company’s plan for the “The New Motorola.” After that, it was all about the reveals. Motorola revealed three new phones in total: the long-rumored DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR M, which has had its share of rumors as well, along with the surprise announcement of the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. If you were waiting for Motorola’s new devices, you’ll be pleased to know that we have a couple of hands-on posts that cover all three devices.

Woodside also said today that any Motorola phones from 2012 that don’t get updated to Jelly Bean by the end of the year will be a eligible for a $100 voucher, and it was announced that the developer editions of the DROID RAZR M and the RAZR HD will come with unlockable bootloaders. A little bit later on in the day, we found out that the PureView ad Nokia showed during its presentation may be a little bit misleading, and even though there was a ton of Nokia and Motorola news today, there was still time for a new iPhone leak, this time giving us an up-close look at the battery. Windows Phone 8 will be getting screenshot support, and today the EC approved a mobile wallet team up between three European carriers, much to Google’s chagrin.

Sony is putting its massive 84-inch 4K TV up for pre-order tomorrow, T-Mobile has rolled out unlimited 4G data across the country, and Getac has revealed its new Z710 Android tablet, which looks to be capable of taking a few hits. Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Note II have opened in the UK, where the new device has an expected mid-October ship date, and Ubisoft has announced that it will stop implementing always-on DRM in its PC games. Valve has been forced to impose a submission fee for those looking to list something on Steam Greenlight, Epson has unveiled a pair of home projectors, and finally tonight, NASA scientists today delayed the second engine firing of the Juno spacecraft, which will be headed for Jupiter before long.

That’s all for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Remember to check in with us tomorrow, as we’ll be at Amazon’s press event, where it’s expected to reveal a couple of new devices in the Kindle line!

Lately we’ve been seeing Motorola slowly become more friendly toward those who want their Moto phone’s bootloader unlocked, and the company looks to be continuing that trend with the incoming DROID RAZR M and DROID RAZR HD. Announced today at Motorola’s press event in New York City, both of these new devices will be getting developer editions, and you can sign up to get one right now from Motorola’s website. The developer editions of these phones will come complete with an unlockable bootloader, letting you get in and have some fun tweaking the operating system if you’d like.

Some phones like the Google Nexus devices allow users to easily unlock the bootloader, but this is still a pretty new thing for Motorola. We’ve seen other companies like HTC and ASUS go this route, so it isn’t much of a surprise to see Motorola do the same. Naturally, unlocking the bootloader will void your warranty, but we’re thinking that developers won’t mind that little caveat as much as the typical consumer would.

If you’re a developer and are interested in taking an in-depth look at the Motorola DROID RAZR M, you can order the developer edition of the phone right now from Motorola’s website for $549.99. Developer editions of the RAZR M will begin shipping out next week, just in time for the phone’s launch at Verizon. With the RAZR HD it’s a different story at the moment, as the developer edition doesn’t have a price or a ship date yet. Motorola says that the RAZR HD will be landing at Verizon before the Sun sets on 2012, so we’re expecting to find out more about the developer edition soon.

It’s nice to see Motorola embracing the development crowd with unlockable bootloaders, and the feature will definitely be appreciated with the RAZR M and the RAZR HD. Does this mean that future Motorola smartphones will come with unlockable bootloaders? Possibly – it looked like Motorola was leaning in that direction even before the RAZR M and RAZR HD were announced, so we should see more Motorola phones offering unlockable bootloaders in the future. Stay tuned.

Earlier today Motorola took the stage and announced the next stage of their DROID lineup. That being primarily the Motorola DROID RAZR HD complete with a beautiful 4.7-inch HD display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and all day battery life. Then they surprised us all by announcing a RAZR MAXX HD too. The MAXX of course featuring a massive 3,300 mAh battery offering unparalleled battery life. Check out our hands-on pictures.

The details have finally been confirmed and basically revealing very little we didn’t already know. The all new Motorola DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD are in many many ways extremely similar to last years model, while getting a boost in a few much needed areas. You’ll get the same awesome hardware, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and Kevlar coating all around — but this time the screen and processor received some much needed attention.

The new RAZRs will be the first smartphones to ship with Google’s own Chrome browser preinstalled, but the star of the show is that 4.7-inch HD display, 4G LTE from Verizon, and the Qualcomm 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor under the hood. For those wondering this is the same CPU powering the new Lumia 920, the Galaxy S III, and AT&T’s HTC One X. There’s not much to differentiate the performance here aside from Motorola’s own user interface changes. The RAZR HD and MAXX HD also come complete with 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 VGA front for video chat, and offer micro-SD support for expanded storage.

The difference here between the two is the RAZR HD finds a perfect middle ground offering a 2,530 mAh battery, while the awesome RAZR MAXX HD comes with a 3,300 mAh battery life that promises 21 hours of talk time, 13 hours of video playback or eight hours of web browsing. Pretty impressive right? So far the styling is extremely similar to what we’ve already seen from the RAZR. There’s nothing different here really worth noting. This time around the Kevlar coating on back wraps around the entirety of the device instead of just in the middle. Oh and they’ll be offering both White and Black models although pricing and release date wasn’t yet revealed.

So far our initial impressions are favorable with the build quality, but we knew that coming in. The hardware is similar but the new Kevlar does feel better in the hand. Then of course, the RAZR HD is extremely thin being just 8.4mm thick. The all new Motorola DROID RAZR HD and MAXX HD will be available later this year although exact details weren’t release. They will ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich although models we are enjoying hands-on with today have 4.1 Jelly Bean — so the update should arrive soon.

Thoughts?

Motorola hasn’t been known for being very timely when it comes to Android software updates for their smartphones. Between the countless times we’ve heard buyers upset, and the fact that Google has now taken over it appears that they’ll be turning the page on those complaints. Motorola has just announced that they’ll be offering timely updates to all devices announced today, and even talked cash.

While Motorola’s new CEO Dennis Woodside was wrapping up he made a huge statement on device updates. Claiming that the new Motorola will offer timely updates to “most” devices released in 2012 to Android 4.1. Jelly Bean. He then followed that up by stating any devices that do not get updated before the end of the year will come with a bonus.

If your Motorola handset from 2012 doesn’t get updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean before the end of the year Motorola will be offering all customers a $100 credit towards any of the new devices announced today. That means the DROID RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD, or the new budget-friendly RAZR M. The RAZR M is only $99 with a new 2-year contract so that means you DROID 4 owners could possibly get it free with that $100 voucher.

Between developer edition smartphones, HD devices with all day better life, and now timely updates with a guarantee this is indeed the “New Motorola.”

Motorola has just announced their hotly anticipated and new flagship Android smartphone here in NYC for the folks over on Verizon Wireless. After countless leaks this new DROID is finally official and comes packing a massive 2,530mAh battery for all day battery life. We’ve seen plenty of the DROID RAZR HD in the past month or so but head down below for the breakdown.

Motorola took the stage at their shared event with Verizon and quickly started off with how amazing the sales have been with their current RAZR line, then jumped into the evolution of the smartphone. This is the first event of this caliber since Google took over and named Dennis Woodside CEO so we are excited to see it all play out. Just as expected here’s all the details on the brand new Motorola DROID RAZR HD with 4G LTE and ICS.

Motorola’s hugely successful DROID RAZR didn’t come with an HD display which was quite disappointing but today however they’ve changed things up. This isn’t a massive improvement over the original but all the right places have been improved to offer a better experience. We knew they were coming but here’s the spec sheet. You get a beautiful and crisp 4.7-inch AMOLED HD display rocking a 1280 x 720p HD resolution — although will be sharing that space with dedicated on-screen Ice Cream Sandwich navigation buttons in favor of the outdated capacitive touch controls. This offers 73% more pixels than the previous RAZR. We love that Motorola has adopted this and hope the trend continues.

Then for the full round out we have Android 4.0.4 on board (Jelly Bean coming soon) powered by the extremely popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5 GHz dual-core S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. The 13 MP rumors were false and Motorola has confirmed the camera on the rear is 8 megapixels — but have improved it in all areas. It offers zero shutter lag and burst mode which is a growing trend as of late. Just like previous generations Motorola has kept the durable and splash-guard Kevlar design standard. This keeps the phone thin, lightweight, and extremely durable.

While staying RAZR thin the DROID RAZR HD combines the sleek design of the original with a happy-medium 2,530 mAh battery under the hood. And whoa, Motorola also announced a DROID RAZR MAXX HD too. More details coming soon. Motorola has just started off the event today and have a few more announcements and a budget smartphone hiding around here somewhere. Stay tuned for more details, coverage, and hands-on pictures and video as soon as humanly possible.
