Safety is one of the prime concerns of a motorcycle and unlike cars where airbags play an important saving factor; bikes typically can’t offer this feature. This was until motorcycle clothing company Dainese and motorcycle makers Ducati started experimenting with the idea of integrating an airbag for the rider and the pillion, into the biking experience. The result is the Ducati Multistrada D-Air model.
We've seen many electric motorcycles roll out over the years -- the Brammo Enertia back in 2007, for example, and the more recent Voxan Wattman -- and with every year comes improvements across the categories: efficiency, power, and technological capabilities. The latest entrant in the market is the Lito Sora, a modern bike with classic design elements and integrated tech.
We've seen a variety of HUD technologies on the automotive front, but the area is a bit lacking when it comes to motorcycles and other motor bikes. To remedy this, APX Labs in Washington DC and HOLOEYE Systems in San Diego joined forces to make the joint venture NUVIZ. Through NUVIZ, the two companies have presented Ride:HUD, a head-up display integrated in a motorcycle helmet that is being funded through Kickstarter.
A French motorcycle company called Voxan has unveiled what it claims to be the most powerful electric motorcycle in the world. The new electric motorcycle is called the Wattman and it packs 200 electric ponies under its sleek bodywork. Like electric cars, all 200hp is available as soon as the throttle is opened.
Zero Motorcycles is a company that produces motorcycles powered by electricity that produce no emissions. Zero also made the first motorcycle that is controllable via a smartphone application. The company has unveiled its 2014 model line that features a new Z-Force Power Tank accessory that allows riders to go up to 171 miles in the city or 88 miles on the highway per charge. The accessory allows buyers to increase energy storage capacity before or after the purchase.
Sometimes walking somewhere is out of the question -- or one simply dislikes the idea of trekking up large hills -- and it is such times when mopeds prove their handiness. In this case, the Greyp G12 is more than a moped, however, having a "Street Mode" that allows it to double as a no-pedaling-necessary motorcycle with a fairly lengthy range.
We're already aware of one record that was broken today, and that was the fastest overall time of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb done by Sebastien Loeb in his Peugeot Sport 208 T16, but as far as motorcycles were concerned, the fastest of the bunch ended up being an all-electric variant, beating out the next-fastest motorcycle by 21 seconds.
In the automotive market, vehicles have tons of technology to help cars keep traction no matter the weather conditions. Automobiles use technology like traction control, ABS brakes, and lots more to help drivers be safer on the road. A lot of that technology isn't typically associated with motorcycles. Italian motorcycle maker Moto Guzzi has unveiled an all new motorcycle called the California 1400 that has some new and interesting technology.
This week the folks at TomTom have made it clear that the TomTom Rider will not be fading into obscurity, re-releasing a new iteration of the device with the same name here in 2013 with a brand new set of specifications and features. This device is made to sit on and with your motorcycle and allow you to get guided in real time, find local hotspots, and share routes with fellow bikers wirelessly via Bluetooth. They'll need a TomTom Rider as well, of course, so pick up a few!
