PS3 custom firmware promised to bypass “Other OS” v3.21 limitation

PS3 custom firmware promised to bypass “Other OS” v3.21 limitation

After Sony's somewhat bizarre "security" related decision to block Other OS installation on the original PS3 consoles with the next scheduled firmware update, hacker George Hotz - who some believe prompted Sony's move, after he publicly admitted to having hacked the console back in January 2010 - has promised a lifeline for console owners.  His advice is to avoid installing the PS3 firmware v3.21 due on April 1st, and instead wait for an alternative flashing app of his own design.

Untethered iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 2G/3G and iPad Jailbreak promised [Video]

It's already possible to Jailbreak the current-generation iPhone 3GS and iPod touch, but so far the process requires tethering in order to work.  Geohot, arch-tinkerer and Apple-fondler extraordinaire, is now promising to change all that with a new software-based Jailbreak.  Interestingly, the hacker also reckons it should work on Apple's incoming iPad, too.

Palm Pre gets 800MHz overclock [Video]

Palm Pre gets 800MHz overclock [Video]

Palm Pre not fast enough for you?  The Pre Plus doubles the webOS smartphone's RAM but leaves the processor (a 600MHz TI OMAP 3430 underclocked by Palm to 500MHz) unchanged; happily where Palm themselves seemingly fear to tread, owners themselves have no such qualms.  A couple of mod-happy Pre owners have overclocked the smartphone to 800MHz, resulting in swifter performance and, surprisingly, no significant increase in power consumption.

Gaaglebot hacked Roomba indexes your house [Video]

Gaaglebot hacked Roomba indexes your house [Video]

Google's attempts to index the world are all well and good, but it still can't tell you - no matter what The Onion would have you believe - where things are in your house.  Some Swedish modders have attempted to fill that gap, however, with the Gaaglebot, a modified Roomba outfitted with a compact webserver and a webcam.  The idea is that the robot roams about your house, shooting photos of any text it finds and converting that into a searchable database.

WAD2 Windows Phone 7 theme boosts performance [Video]

Remember yesterday's Windows Phone 7 Metro UI theme for Windows Mobile 6.5 devices?  Performance on the early alpha was sluggish, but it looks like Jaxbot's project isn't the only one out there looking to put some new shine on older devices.  LeSScro has been working on a Metro UI theme, based on WisBar Advance Desktop 2.x, and it's running a whole lot more smoothly than yesterday's attempt.

USB Host mod for Motorola DROID promises accessory support

USB Host mod for Motorola DROID promises accessory support

Plugging a USB memory stick, keyboard, mouse or even a printer into your Motorola DROID could be possible very soon, thanks to a new hack that adds USB Host support to the Android smartphone.  Modder Chris Paget and friends discovered that Motorola had used USB-OTG compliant hardware for the DROID, crippling it only by virtue of the microUSB port; one thrown-together adapter cable and a tiny dongle that triggers the Host mode later, and the DROID will recognize USB peripherals.

Nokia 5700 running BlackBerry OS 4? [Video]

We're playing sceptics again today (you can tell because of the official sceptic-hat we're wearing) but according to Chinese MaxPDA forum member selith you're looking at a Nokia 5700 running BlackBerry OS 4.6.0.305.  Kicking off a fourteen page thread of people various praising his work and doubting it, selith then produced a video seemingly showing the handset in action.
