Archos 5 MID mod adds Android Market, Gmail, Maps, more

Industri Repro XBEE reworks Xbox 360 for your A/V rack

Microsoft's Xbox 360 certainly has the media capabilities to earn itself a place underneath your HDTV or in your A/V rack, but the curvy casing doesn't exactly blend in with other such equipment.  Swedish modders Industri Repro have taken that into their own hands, crafting a custom aluminum replacement chassis called the XBEE (XB Elegant Edition) that's the width of a regular DVD player.  They've also stuffed some extra cooling in there, to hopefully avoid the infamous red-ring-of-death. Sony VAIO X gets OS X Snow Leopard

There's a lot to like about Sony's VAIO X ultraportable - its indecently-skinny build, the engineering intelligence that went into its design, and its lengthy battery life just to name a few things - but if you're less than inspired by Windows 7 then how about a Mac OS X version?  That's not one of Sony's official options, but insanelymac forum member Asama took it upon himself to throw OS X Snow Leopard onto the VAIO X himself. To do so he used the hacked together build of Snow Leopard that's been put together for the Sony VAIO P, reasoning that many of the components used in that don't-call-it-a-netbook machine were the same as used in the VAIO X.  Happily it installed quite merrily, though as expected the WiFi doesn't work.  Where fixing that in the VAIO P is a case of taking out the wireless card and swapping in a different one, it's a more arduous task on the VAIO X since so much has been soldered into place in the name of space-saving. HTC HD2 tweak enables WiFi N support

As if the HTC HD2 needed any more hyperbole, it's now emerged that the Windows Phone can actually be coaxed to use WiFi 802.11n networks rather than just the advertised b/g support.  The tweak was identified over at xda-developers and requires a registry hack; however some users have reported significant increases in battery consumption when the higher-speed wireless is switched on. Hack-a-Sketch takes classic toy digital [Video]

Electronic versions of the classic Etch-a-Sketch aren't particularly unusual, but so far this is the first time we've seen Arduino-controlled knobs with physical resistance and a proper shake-to-clear integrated into such a project.  The Hack-a-Sketch takes a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and adds the usual two Etch-a-Sketch rotary knobs; this time, though, they're hooked up to two potentiometers which control the onscreen drawing. Sony UX490 UMPC hugely modded: CPU switched, 3G injected, quad-OS

We've covered a few modded Sony VAIO UX-series UMPCs over the years, but it's rare to see all the headline tweaks combined into one machine.  Happily one member of the Micro PC Talk forums has done just that, taking a humble 2007 UX490 and not only switching out its SSD, WiFi and other basic components, but completely replacing the standard CPU (which is soldered into place) for a faster version. Rovio mod adds remote-control over home appliances

We know this looks like a plastic trashcan full of junk electronics, but it's actually the inside of WowWee's Rovio robot webcam just after he's been given a remote-control mod.  Obviously blind to the dangers of granting your robot power over high-voltage appliances, RoboCommunity member Thel has hacked together a system whereby he can switch devices on and off at the mains using Rovio. Zooomer adds full multitouch zoom to HTC HD2

A week ago we described HTC's HD2 as the poster-child for Windows Mobile 6.5, despite HTC having to replace, rework or generally junk a lot of the Microsoft OS' native functionality and replace it with their own.  One such change - and a particularly welcome one at that - is multitouch support, but HTC have limited its use in the final build to the browser and a few other apps.  Now there's a nifty app which unlocks multitouch support in every app system-wide. Zooomer for the HTC HD2 will work with any .exe executable file on the Windows Phone, and basically add in multitouch control.  That's going to be of mixed use, of course, since not all apps will really benefit from it, but we're glad to at least have the choice ourselves.  The functionality is selective, too, which means you can turn off Zooomer's multitouch on an app-by-app basis if you're experiencing problems or just find the zooming frustrating (such as in certain games, perhaps). Meizu M8 gets unofficial Android mod [Video]

Meizu's M8 started out as a comedy iPhone clone and gradually developed its own - at least partial - identity; now some earnest modders have given it a complete OS upgrade.  Out went Windows CE, to be replaced by Google's Android platform, though it's still very early days and you lose more than just the original UI in the process. HTC Diamond gets Android 1.6 in OS hack [Video]

It's taken them over 500 pages of hacking, but earnest tweakers over at xda-developers have managed to get Android 1.6 Donut running on the hitherto Windows Mobile 6.1 HTC Diamond.  The first-gen Diamond has a compact 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen running at VGA resolution, and the hacked Android ROM is reportedly responsive together with offering support for both WiFi and GPS.
