The DoomBOX: DIY Doom console hacked from camera [Video]

The DoomBOX: DIY Doom console hacked from camera [Video]

You need quite a few fingers to count off all the reasons why this particular hack is awesome: it's based on a digital camera with a hacked OS, plays classic 3D shooter Doom, and uses authentic keyboard buttons for control.  The handiwork of JJ Dasher, The DoomBOX is based on a Kodak DC290 digital camera with a custom port of Doom for its hack-friendly Digita OS.

WAD2 Windows Phone 7 theme boosts performance [Video]

WAD2 Windows Phone 7 theme boosts performance [Video]

Remember yesterday's Windows Phone 7 Metro UI theme for Windows Mobile 6.5 devices?  Performance on the early alpha was sluggish, but it looks like Jaxbot's project isn't the only one out there looking to put some new shine on older devices.  LeSScro has been working on a Metro UI theme, based on WisBar Advance Desktop 2.x, and it's running a whole lot more smoothly than yesterday's attempt.

USB Host mod for Motorola DROID promises accessory support

USB Host mod for Motorola DROID promises accessory support

Plugging a USB memory stick, keyboard, mouse or even a printer into your Motorola DROID could be possible very soon, thanks to a new hack that adds USB Host support to the Android smartphone.  Modder Chris Paget and friends discovered that Motorola had used USB-OTG compliant hardware for the DROID, crippling it only by virtue of the microUSB port; one thrown-together adapter cable and a tiny dongle that triggers the Host mode later, and the DROID will recognize USB peripherals.

Nokia 5700 running BlackBerry OS 4? [Video]

Nokia 5700 running BlackBerry OS 4? [Video]

We're playing sceptics again today (you can tell because of the official sceptic-hat we're wearing) but according to Chinese MaxPDA forum member selith you're looking at a Nokia 5700 running BlackBerry OS 4.6.0.305.  Kicking off a fourteen page thread of people various praising his work and doubting it, selith then produced a video seemingly showing the handset in action.

UMID mbook M1 USB 2.0 mod

UMID mbook M1 USB 2.0 mod

One of the frustrations of UMID's first-gen mbook M1 was the absence of a standard USB port; instead you had to remember to carry an awkward adapter dongle.  The company addressed that with the mbook M2, but one owner of the original machine has taken matters into his own hands and added a USB port himself.

Android 2.0.1 dual-boot XPERIA X1 hack [Video]

Android 2.0.1 dual-boot XPERIA X1 hack [Video]

Over at xda-developers they're pathologically addicted to getting software to run on devices it was never intended to, and fed up of waiting for Sony Ericsson's debut into the Android ecosystem, the XPERIA X10, they've focused instead on getting Android onto an earlier phone.  Normally the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is found playing nicely with Windows Mobile, but you can now dual-boot it with that and Android 2.0.1.

MSI Wind gets sliding touchscreen tablet mod

MSI Wind gets sliding touchscreen tablet mod

The slider form-factor isn't unusual in mobile devices - HTC's Touch Pro2 has a particularly nifty mechanism, and larger handhelds, such as the PsiXpda UMPC, have used it too - but how about a 10.2-inch slider tablet?  That's what InsanelyWind forum member c0ff33 is working on, turning his Advent 4211c (a rebadge of the MSI Wind U100) into a touchscreen tablet that opens up to reveal the QWERTY keyboard.

Kindle DX gets Bluetooth terminal hack

Kindle DX gets Bluetooth terminal hack

Amazon's hiding of serial port connections inside the Kindle isn't a new discovery, but adding a Bluetooth module to it is.  Tinkerer Darron cracked open his Kindle DX and snapped his way through enough plastic to fit in a SparkFun Bluetooth Mate module; that means he can wirelessly connect to the Kindle DX to get a serial terminal on the ereader.

Nokia N900 runs Mac OS X 10.3 (slowly) [Video]

Nokia's N900 is developing quite a name for itself as a great platform for hacking, and after seeing the Maemo smartphone dual-boot Android a week ago, now it's the turn of some classic Mac OS X action.  Toni Nikkanen managed to get Mac OS X 10.3 - the Power PC version - running on his N900, though to be fair it's not a native install; instead, the Apple OS runs in the PearPC emulator.

Samsung NC10 second PCI-e slot hack

Samsung NC10 second PCI-e slot hack

The difference between brave and foolhardy is how successful you end up, and by that measure Samsung NC10 owner Graeme is pretty darn brave.  Wanting to add a Broadcom HD decoder card - for buttery smooth 1080p HD playback - to his netbook, but not willing to abandon the wireless card occupying its sole PCI-e slot, Graeme took a soldering iron to the NC10 and added a second slot.

Wireless PS3 Portable mod [Video]

Wireless PS3 Portable mod [Video]

Even in its most recent Slim incarnation, the PS3 doesn't exactly lend itself to portable use.  Rather than attempt to squeeze the whole console into a handheld form-factor, modder BronckartN took a more roundabout approach: his Wireless PS3 Portable is actually a display-equipped remote controller, meaning the console itself can stay put while you play it elsewhere.
