Samsung Galaxy S II 1080p 30Mbit/s video hack released

Remember the Samsung Galaxy S II hack we told you about yesterday that allowed for 1080p 24Mbit/s video recording on the Android smartphone? As we hoped, it's spawned a new package for GSII owners wanting to boost video quality, with original dev hyperX working with xda-developers' Potatoman (who had already released an audio quality tweak for the phone) on a way to persuade the Samsung to record up to 30Mbit/s Super Fine 1080p HD at 30fps with 48Khz/192kbps audio.

Samsung Galaxy S II gets 1080p 24 Mbit/s recording hack [Updated]

Samsung's Galaxy S II has been coaxed into recording higher-quality video than the 1080p Full HD it supports out of the box, with a modder better known for his work on Symbian cameras turning his attention to the Android smartphone. hyperX added continuous auto-focus and 720p 30fps recording to the Nokia N8 back in 2010, but has now persuaded the GSII's 8-megapixel camera to record 24 Mbit/s 1080p at 30fps complete with 44.1khz 192-bit audio.

Build 7392 isn't expected to bring any especially interesting changes, but the issue could lead to headaches down the road when Microsoft releases more significant updates like Mango to the platform.

Ben Heck reworks his portable workbench

I'm not the sort that is organized enough to have a portable workbench or even a stationary workbench. I have a bunch of tools crammed in various drawers and bags so it takes about twice as long to do something just because I can’t find my stuff. Modder Ben Heck is the organized type and he has constructed a new portable workbench for the latest episode of his show.

Lenovo PC modder challenge produces articulated touchscreen table, desktop arcade, more

Lenovo has been courting PC modders in the run-up to CES 2011 this week, and some of the results of the "What's Your Idea of Fun?" campaign are pretty striking. Taking regular Lenovo computers as their starting point, the modders variously came up with a desktop arcade cabinet, a beautiful Birdseye maple and teak gaming PC, and the bizarre MD-5 robot-themed touchscreen computer shown here.
