Kin fallout continues: only 503 sold tips insider, red faces all round at Microsoft

, Jul 8th 2010 Discuss [0]

In the aftermath of Kin's demise, details of the mis-management and general botched effort continue to seep out of Microsoft.  Business Insider quotes an anonymous Microsoft employee who says there's "embarrassment all over campus from the rank and file about the Kin announcement" while John Gruber has heard that Verizon sold a grand total of 503 Kin handsets; that fits in with previously rumored figures, though Microsoft still insist they shipped at least twice that amount. Independence Day from subsidies and agreements

, Jul 5th 2010 Discuss [4]

Yesterday, of course, was Independence Day in the US, and today our American readers are likely recovering from yam overdoses. It seemed the ideal time for a geeks’ Independence Day, trying to divorce American cellphone buyers from their heavily subsidised plans and, instead, push them toward cheaper-in-the-long-term unlocked devices. Problem is, none of the US carriers want to play ball.

Verizon slash KIN pricing; new firmware due this summer

, Jun 29th 2010 Discuss [1]

Verizon has quietly slashed pricing for the Microsoft KIN handsets, bringing the pebble-shaped KIN One down to $29.99 from its previous $49.99 pricing and the larger KIN Two halved in price from $99.99 to $49.99.  The move follows criticism of the featurephone/smartphone devices together with apparently disappointing sales figures; Microsoft is yet to confirm any numbers publicly, but sources at Verizon stores claim that the KIN handsets are being outsold by DROID and Palm Pre Plus phones. Innpu Wired Phone has built-in headphones

, Jun 22nd 2010 Discuss [0]

I haven't owned a phone in years and years that shipped with headphones that I thought were decent enough to actually use. My iPhone headphones leave a ton to be desired and never get used. These were the first thing I upgraded on my iPhone after opening the box. I bet that a lot of folks out there do the same thing. Read The Full Story

Just 500 Microsoft Kin phones sold claims source

, Jun 18th 2010 Discuss [1]

We'll admit, we weren't entirely convinced by Microsoft's KIN smartphones - their patchy specs and expensive Verizon smartphone tariffs didn't add up to a particularly compelling range - but Business Insider's current rumor that the company has sold just 500 devices doesn't quite ring true.  They aren't saying where that figure came from, though they are asking any Kin owners to step forward and identify themselves. AT&T 3G Microcell data use counts toward your wireless allowance

, Jun 18th 2010 Discuss [1]

AT&T's 3G Microcell is prompting controversy, after it emerged that the carrier will be counting data use through the femtocell towards users' monthly wireless data allowance, despite being routed via your own broadband connection.  Therefore, if you use significant amounts of data when your phone is connected through the femtocell, you could find yourself falling foul of AT&T's recent data caps without even using their regular wireless network. , Jun 18th 2010 Discuss [1]

While HP has been keen to talk up the positive benefits of acquiring Palm and webOS, they've also been reluctant to commit to any specifics - we've heard about tablets and printers running the platform, but nothing that left us particularly confident about smartphones.  Now, thanks to an unnamed Palm spokesperson talking during an AT&T developers webinar, we have a few more tidbits; nothing concrete, but confirmation that Palm is "working on future devices" together with a "new version of the OS".
