RIM oust Motorola from top 5 phone vendors; Samsung see major growth

, Apr 30th 2010 Discuss [0]

Motorola have dropped out of the top five worldwide mobile phone manufacturers ranking, according to analysts IDC, with RIM taking their place.  The move - which pegs Nokia in first place, followed by Samsung in second, LG in third and RIM sharing fourth place with Sony Ericsson - is being described as a sign of growing smartphone demand.  Motorola, who have been a member of the top five since IDC began tracking worldwide quarterly figures in 2004, shipped 8.5m handsets in the three month period at the start of 2010; in contrast, RIM shipped 10.6m. Motorola RAZR3 prototype gets video demo

, Apr 30th 2010 Discuss [0]

News that Motorola had canned their RAZR3 project all the way back in November 2008 was met with collective indifference, but beyond a small photo of the handset we've been left hanging as to what happened to the company's prototypes.  One such example has leaked to Travis the Tech Man and he's been showing it off on video. Video demo after the cut Read The Full Story

Microsoft’s Kin and the emergence of featurephone data tiers

, Apr 29th 2010 Discuss [2]

As I was in the middle of writing this month’s column on Microsoft’s Kin, SlashGear editor Chris Davies sent me a draft of Michael Gartenberg’s column on… Microsoft’s Kin. I was relieved to see that there wasn’t too much overlap; Michael’s column is on the Kin’s target market, and I’m focusing on changing carrier pricing structures. I agree with Michael’s premise: there is pent up demand for a social network appliance, and the TwitterPeek ain’t it. My problem with the Kin is that we haven’t been given the critical piece of information that will determine whether it will be a success: data pricing.

Why I like Kin

Recently, Microsoft unveiled a new mobile platform and two new devices built for it. It’s called Kin and it’s targeted at a younger demographic with a focus on social communication. It’s also been one of the most controversial releases I’ve ever seen. Many folks who’ve weighed in on the topic weren’t too impressed. They cite a lack of features ranging from a calendar to no support for third party applications, most notably games. I don’t share those views (although I do think it’s not a good idea for middle aged Microsoft executives to go with a shirt untucked and unshaven look while presenting) and I think Kin has a good chance of being successful in the marketplace. Here’s why.

Sagem Puma phone clears FCC

, Apr 28th 2010 Discuss [0]

Sagem's Puma phone has cleared the FCC this week, but don't get too excited; an official debut in the US is still some ways off.  The 2.8-inch touchscreen handset - which is heavily skinned with Puma-themed content and apps - currently lacks US 3G support, unsurprising given Sagem themselves told us earlier this month that an official US launch wasn't expected until the first half of 2011. Microsoft Kin ROMs tip AT&T, T-Mobile & other carrier support

, Apr 28th 2010 Discuss [0]

Microsoft were upfront about their plans to launch their new Kin One and Kin Two featurephones not only on Verizon in the US but on Vodafone in Europe, but it looks like multiple other carriers are also in line for the QWERTY handsets.  According to ROM-tinkerer Conflipper, and his excavations through system provisioning files pulled from an early Kin OS build, AT&T, T-Mobile, Fido and various European carriers are all listed. Nokia C2 split-keyboard phone leaks

, Apr 28th 2010 Discuss [0]

Nokia are no strangers to split-QWERTY keyboards, but while the old E70 went with a flip design, this mockup of what's tipped to be the Nokia C2 has a more unusual rotating display.  According to information obtained by Ciao Mondo, the C2's screen section flips to the side to reveal the second half of the keyboard; still, this would be an entry-level device so we probably shouldn't expect anything too dramatic when it comes to functionality.
