Nokia dual-SIM C1 and C2 phones debut

, Jun 3rd 2010 Discuss [1]

Dual-SIM support seems to be one of those things Nokia keeps getting asked for, but we have to turn to copycats like Nokla to provide.  The Finns have obviously had enough, and have come through on their promise to pack two slots in a single handset.  Don't expect anything earth-shattering, at least from a smartphone-lovers perspective; the new dual-SIM C1 (C1-00) and C2 handsets are budget phones intended for developing markets.  The Series 30 C1 allows users to flip between SIMs with a single key-press, while the Series 40 C2 keeps both active simultaneously. Symbian^3 to debut on non-Nokia handset

, May 26th 2010 Discuss [0]

Nokia may be carefully guarding the Symbian^3 build running on their Nokia N8 prototypes, but according to Lee Williams, executive director of the Symbian Foundation, the OS code itself "is almost completely mature."  In fact, it looks like it will be ready before the N8 itself is; the first handset to market with Symbian^3 won't be the Nokia smartphone but one from an unnamed Asian vendor. Samsung I8330 aka Vodafone H2 LiMo phone leaks

, May 26th 2010 Discuss [0]

Vodafone's 360 service and its duo of Samsung handsets didn't exactly set the cellphone marketplace on fire, but it looks like the carrier isn't giving up yet.  A new touchscreen phone purported to be the Samsung I8330 - or, in Vodafone's line-up, the Samsung H2 - has emerged, complete with the LiMo R3 OS, a 1GHz processor and an 8-megapixel camera. , May 25th 2010 Discuss [0]

AT&T have agreed to provide unlock codes for any device they supply to subscribers - as long as it's not an iPhone.  The move follows a class action suit filed against the carrier, and will see prepaid customers handsets unlocked simply by showing proof of purchase or postpaid customers who have 90 days or more active service. Nokia Yahoo! Phone “out of the scope of the announcement”

, May 24th 2010 Discuss [0]

Sources had suggested that there'd be no sign of the well-rumored Nokia-made Yahoo! Phone at the two companies' press event this morning, and sure enough it's all about Ovi services.  Asked in a Q&A whether there would be a Yahoo! phone, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told reporters and investors "No, no, that is out of the scope of the announcement." GenUpload: Two weeks with KIN

, May 21st 2010 Discuss [0]

A few weeks back, I wrote my first impressions of Microsoft’s new KIN phones, and their appeal specifically to the different way teenagers use cellphones. But understanding the intent of the KIN and a few hours of testing wasn’t really enough to get a real picture of how well it would actually work as a phone for teenagers. So, for two weeks, I shelved my featurephone and iPod Touch, and went with just a KIN (in this case, the KIN 2).

Nokia and Yahoo! deal for mobile services imminent?

, May 21st 2010 Discuss [0]

Nokia are going full-steam ahead with their own package of services - the feature-toting update to Ovi Maps earlier this week is proof of that - but are they also planning a deal with Yahoo! which will see the latter company's email, search and other applications and services built into certain Nokia models?  That's what AllThingsD are reporting, having been invited to Yahoo!'s "Project Nike" launch next week with the promise of "an exciting announcement about providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences".  They dug around and came up not only with the Nokia connection but some particularly snide comments about both firms. Just because you're a senior citizen, it doesn't mean you don't want some Matrix-style screen popping action in your cellphone.  Just5 have announced their third super-simple cellphone, the CP11, and it takes the big button interface to its logical conclusion.  Rather than the squashed display of previous Just5 models, a squeeze of the CP11 causes the sizeable monochrome LCD to pop out. Facebook have launched a new mobile site, 0.facebook.com, intended to offer speedier access from cellphones, tablets and MIDs to social networking.  The new site will live alongside, rather than replace, the existing Facebook Mobile; that's because the company has negotiated free access to 0.facebook.com with over 50 mobile operators worldwide.  That means subscribers will be able to check their Facebook walls, send messages and manage friend requests without paying a cent in data fees. Nokia “simplify” by splitting smartphone & cellphone teams

, May 11th 2010 Discuss [1]

Nokia have announced a reshuffle of their organizational structure, and while it doesn't - as speculation suggested - see Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo lose his CEO position, it does split the company's phone business up into two hardware lines and a separate sales/marketing arm.  For devices, Nokia will have a Mobile Solutions branch that deals with "high-end mobile computer and smartphone" style hardware, using both MeeGo and Symbian, together with a Mobile Phones branch that deals with mass-market Series 40 handsets.
