Verizon tiered data and LTE hotspot fees confirmed for July 7

You'll need to act fast if you want to pick up a new unlimited Verizon Wireless data plan, with confirmation that, as of tomorrow, July 7, the carrier's new tiered plans will replace the existing options. A Verizon spokesperson confirmed the switchover to FierceWireless, with four new packages on offer for new customers, ranging from $10 per month for a mere 75MB up to $80 per month for 10GB. Free AT&T WiFi Coming to 20 New York City Parks this Summer

AT&T announced today that it will be adding free WiFi to 26 locations in 20 New York City parks. The free WiFi is available to all, AT&T customers and non-customers. The service rolled out to three parks today, with 23 additional parks to follow this summer. Nothing is cheaper than free, and it is hard to complain about quality of service when you are paying nothing out of pocket. Novatel Wireless Adds DLNA to the MiFi 2372

We reviewed the AT&T MiFi 2372 back in January, but since then Novatel, the devices manufacturer, has recently updated the device’s software. DLNA streaming media support has been added to the MiFi 2372. The MiFi 2372 already functioned well as a mobile 3G or 4G hotspot, and sharing the microSDHC card helped set it apart from the competition. Adding DLNA support just sweetened the package. Novatel Mobile Hotspot patent opens door to MiFi legal firestorm

Novatel Wireless has clinched a mobile hotspot patent which could usher in the next round of legal battles between it and MiFi-making rivals. The patent, "Systems and methods for automatic connection with a wireless network," details the way in which a mobile hotspot automatically hooks up to a cellular data connection and pre-associated WiFi clients, bridging one to the other. Clearwire has confirmed that it is shuttering its Rover pre-pay brand, replacing it with its own no-contract plans. The company told FierceWireless that Rover was only ever "offered on a limited retail basis in a couple markets" and was seen as a way "to test some new pay-as-you-go pricing options."
