Welcome to Friday evening, everyone. Today was a pretty big day in the world of tech, with both Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface launching and the iPad mini going up for pre-order. Microsoft was actually handing out £50 coupons to the Microsoft Store for giving those in the UK who pre-ordered a Surface conflicting messages about when it will ship, and the company even managed launch Xbox Smartglass for Android alongside Surface and Windows. Microsoft said it will be giving Windows 8 Pro users a free upgrade to Media Center, while Steven Sinofsky talked up the company's new products, managing to get a couple of shots in at Apple at the same time.

Microsoft Surface pre-orders delayed in UK, apologetic coupon sent instead
This week the folks at Microsoft have made one gigantically undeniable effort to let the world know they're ready for Windows 8 to hit the public, but in the UK, they've hit a bit of a snag. It would appear that those early adopters hoping to get a Microsoft Surface this week after having pre-ordered one when they were placed on sale are now receiving a notice. This notice says that Microsoft is sorry that conflicting messages had been sent through various portals giving different odd delivery dates, be they later or earlier than originally stated - as it turns out, the original date range stands.

Welcome to Thursday evening folks. Today was Microsoft's big Windows 8 launch event, and though we didn't find out many new details, the company did share a few interesting tidbits of information. For instance, did you know that there are more than 1,000 Windows 8 certified PCs now? How about the fact that Microsoft has sold a whopping 670 million Windows 7 licenses? Microsoft also told us that the Windows Store will be available in 231 markets, and that Windows RT is supported by more than 420 million devices. Impressive numbers to be sure, but it's important to remember why we were at this show in the first place: Windows 8 launches in just a few hours, so get ready for that.

We’re here at the biggest Microsoft event in many years: the launch of Windows 8, right here on the shores of New York City with not just a press event set up for the blast, but a full-on takeover of Times Square as well! Steve Ballmer: “Obviously” Microsoft will do more hardware
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has reiterated the company’s new commitment to hardware, suggesting that it will “dive in” when “opportunities to set a new standard” arise. Speaking to the BBC, outspoken Ballmer confirmed what he had previously hinted at in a letter to shareholders earlier this month, a “fundamental shift” of Microsoft’s attention from primarily software to a combination of that and the hardware it’s used with. The first significant example of that is Surface, Microsoft’s Windows RT tablet, but it won’t be the last.
Microsoft live streaming Windows 8 event keynote
It isn't exactly a secret anymore that Microsoft is holding a big Windows 8 launch event in New York tomorrow, and indeed, we'll be there covering the whole thing.
