There’s a brand new studio-grade condenser microphone in town for both USB and iPad, and it comes from Blue Microphones. This mic goes by the name Spark Digital and is able to produce darn-near completely excellent sounds with a the same amount of high-quality craftsmanship that went into the company’s other excellent comparable mic, the Spark XLR. What this Spark Digital unit does is take the same studio-grade condenser capsule plus hand-tuned components and sets you up for whatever you want to record – be it a podcast, music, location recording and more!

In this device you’ve got built-in focus control, this offering you two different sonic options with the tap of a physical button. A lovely blue light up front of the device lets you know when you’re rolling, and an adjustable desk stand and built-in shockmount allows you to get the grade audio you want wherever you may roam. You get y-cables for each platform you want to work with as well as a headphone jack so you can listen in on what exactly you’ll be recording as the device records in real-time.

You’ve got a noise level of 10 dB (A-weighted), sound to noise ratio of 84 dB, and frequency response of 26Hz to 20kHz. You can use your iPad or iPad 2′s own Apple 30-pin connector to hook this device up or any USB 2.0+ cord straight to your laptop. You get a sensitivity rating of 28 mV/Pa, SPL handling range of 65-128 dBA, and the whole thing comes in a lovely blue and silver color combination. This device is not yet priced or dated, but it IS being shown off this week at MacWorld | iWorld 2012, so stay tuned!

Blue Microphones has outed its CES range, a trio of mics targeting both computer musicians and – thanks to iOS device compatibility – Garageband musicians. The Spark Digital leads the range, a USB and iPad compatible studio-grade condenser microphone suitable for vocals, drums, guitars, piano, speech, location recording and other uses, with a zero-latency headphone output, volume/gain control and its analog predecessor’s “Focus” control.

With Focus turned off, Blue Microphones says, you can expect “crisp, powerful audio with enhanced low frequency sensitivity for recordings with greater impact and definition.” Turn it on, and you get”greater clarity and detail for a tighter, more focused sound.” The company throws in a desk stand and anti-shock mount, along with a Y-cable for headphone monitoring, plus a 25GB cloud account for its Spark Digital editing tools.

Slightly more affordable, the Mikey Digital targets iPhone, iPad and iPod touch only, a posable mic plugging directly into the dock connector and pairing two custom-tuned condenser capsules for audio input in Garageband, the camcorder app and other software. Automatic and manual gain, an LED clipping indicator and 3.5mm aux-in, as well as a USB pass-through for charging, round out the main specs today, though Blue is keen to point out that the Mikey Digital is firmware-upgradable for new abilities down the line.

Finally, the Tiki is a USB-only microphone, said to be the first such USB model to “mimic the intelligence of human hearing by focusing on desired sounds, minimizing background noise and knowing when to mute altogether.” An array of noise cancellation and isolation tech – switchable between Intelligent Speech Mode and Natural Recording Mode – promises to highlight only the audio you really want, meaning keyboard sounds aren’t captured during conference calls, and background noise doesn’t interrupt your guitar solo. There’s a bundled docking station too.

The Blue Microphones Tiki will be priced at $59, the Spark Digital at $199, while Mikey Digital will be $99. All are listed as “coming soon.”

Contact microphones turn vibrations into electrical signals, and can then be transcoded into sound waves. This is precisely what the Mogees project does, and it does it well. The gadget can stick to any surface and turn it into your musical playground. There are multiple settings to help produce one’s desired sound, but the real key resides in the gestures.

Using gestures is where the more unique sounds are discovered, and from the clip below they work flawlessly. Sliding, scratching, tapping and countless other gestures make this little device desirable for anyone. And to be honest, it would make quite an impression in public.

If you were hoping to slip one of these gadgets under your teacher’s desk at school, then you might want to think up another prank – because the Mogees project isn’t commercially available. Though, I know a number of people that would pay good money for a little device like this, so we could see a similar product on the market in due time. Until then, you’ll just have to stick to playing music the old fashioned way – on your instruments.

This week we’re jumping out of our seats at the news that legendary music machine makers Roland have shipped their newest sound recorder: the Roland R-26 with six-channel audio recording and two types of onboard stereo mics. This is no low-end recorder, ladies and gentlemen, and what it lacks in aesthetic appeal for all you thin and cute loving electronics owners out there it more than makes up for in sound recording power. This device records directly to your SD/SDHC card and has XLR/TRS combo inputs for ultimate ease in integration with the equipment you’ve already got.

This device has USB audio interface functionality, is able to easily record solo or ensemble music experiences, and is more than capable of helping you make the most of your audio/video production, no matter the level of professional you might be. You’ll be able to power this monster with four AA batteries, an AC adaptor, or an external battery – enough options for you? The two stereo mics then, omnidirection and XY as they are, offer you mic options that’ll fit whatever your occasion may be.

You’ve also got phantom power working with two XLR/TRS combo inputs so you can run some external microphones with ease. Line-level devices of all sorts can also plug in here, as can stereo mini-jacks for plug-on powered mics. Audio captured by this device’s onboard microphones can either be captured as a single mixed track or as three separate stereo files, that being six channels in total, able to be mixed together later at your leisure.

The interface you see on this device includes both physical buttons and dials as well as a neat little touch-screen interface with a very basic set of on-display controls. Transfer your WAV/BWF and MP3 format files back to your computer over USB 2.0 and fear not, as this device does have functionality with both Windows and Mac-based machines. There’s a rear-panel mount included that’ll allow you to connect this device to your standard camera tripod, and an extensive line of accessories is in the works for further integration with devices galore.

This recording device is available now for MSRP $599.00 – grab one at your favorite music machine emporium!

So you’ve got a desire to record that lecture at school or the Wu-Tang concert you’re about to attend, but you just don’t trust the mic on your iPhone to do the full trick – how about a stereo mic device that pops in with ease from Tascam? Just in time for the holidays, Tascam has revealed and put up for sale the iM2, a stereo microphone attachment for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch – and it looks so sweet! How we’ve just got to figure out what we’re going to do with the sound once we’ve got it.

You’ll have yourself a top of the line sound recorder with this set of condenser microphones, one device to give your iPhone the same high-quality recording abilities as Tascam’s best-selling DR-series recorders – and that’s hot. You’ll just connect this bumper in to the dock connector on your iDevice and you’ll instantly have recording with over 180 degrees of adjustment for the microphones. In addition, uni-directional elements sit inside the AB patten that’ll bring you no less than what Tascam considers high class detailed stereo imaging.

What sets this particular 3rd party recorder apart from the others plugging into the iPhone is that it contains its own microphone preamp and analog-to-digital converter. Other mics use the iPhone’s own preamp, while the iM2 can take in up to 125dB of sound without distortion. That means the Slayer concert will actually be listenable after you bring it on home. There’s a stereo limiter inside as well incase there’s any sudden air-horns sneaking up on the unit.

Best Buy has announced that it is taking pre-orders right now on the cool Samson USB studio microphones called the Meteor. I mentioned the Meteor back when Samson first announced the microphone in early January around CES time. Best Buy has announced that it is taking pre-orders now on the shiny chrome version of the Meteor and on a limited edition gold plated version of the mic as well.

The chrome version of the mic and the gold one are the same as far as features go. The limited edition gold version of the mic sets itself apart for the standard chrome offering with its 22K gold plated body that is jewelry grade and it comes in a mahogany wood case. Other features of the limited edition mic include a special gold braided USB cable.

Each of the limited edition Meteor mics is numbered and there are only 400 units being made and sold. The gold version of the mic will only be offered at Best Buy stores. Other than the color and limited edition nature both the gold and chrome mics share the same 25mm condenser element, stereo headphone output, and an all metal body with the cool folding legs for standing the mic upright. Pre-orders are underway for the limited edition mic now for $149.99 and the standard version is $99.99 with shipment on both set for April 15.

I used to own a convertible and I can tell you from experience that if my phone rang while I was driving with the top down I just didn’t answer it Bluetooth or not. The person on the other end would never be able to hear what I was saying because of all the wind noise. A company called iASUS has announced a new throat mic system like you see military and police types in movies wearing that promises to pick up your voice without getting any of that wind noise.

The throat mic is called the NT3 and it pics up the vibrations of the persons voice through their throat rather than having a mic. What that boils down to is that the NT3 system doesn’t care how much wind noise is present.

The device has a tangle resistant braided nylon wire, an acoustic coil earpiece and works with any device that has a 2.5mm or 3.5mm headphone jack including the iPhone and more. The mic is available right now, for $89.00 and the only downside I see is that this thing looks strange. I also wonder what your voice sounds like using the throat mic since its picking up voice vibrations at the throat rather than spoken words from your mouth.

The second-gen Mikey for iPod is available now, priced at £59.99 ($95). You can download Blue FiRe here [iTunes link].

Unfortunately, while the new Flip Video camcorders are on sale today, Blue Microphones don’t expect the new Mikey to be available until CES 2011 in January next year. It’ll be priced at $69.

For the hearing impaired, getting along in an every day situation, amongst a crowd of people that don’t necessarily have the same impairment may be an issue. And while many can read lips, that may not be the easiest way to go about things. Especially considering not everyone moves their lips the same way to make the same words, which can be a real pain. But, fear not, because a new designer has just come up with a great way to alleviate all of those problems, and all you need to do is wear some glasses.

They may not be as straight-forward as anti-aging glasses, but not many things are now-a-days. These speech-to-text glasses are, though, a great concept that we really hope get picked up. Designed by a Danish designer by the name of Mads Hindhede, the Babel Fisk glasses are meant to let the deaf literally read what you’re saying, while you’re saying it.

Based on the design, there would be a microphones placed within the frames of the glasses, which would allow for pin-point accuracy to pick up the vocal intonations of someone standing in your line of sight. And then the embedded speech-to-text program within the glasses would literally create text within the lenses of the glasses. What’s more, there would also be the ability to record what’s been said to a flash memory card. Like we said, it’s a great idea — we just hope the glasses get a far more aesthetically pleasing re-design before manufacturing takes off. If manufacturing takes off.

Apple don’t like fussy designs, we all know that by now, and they’re all about paring down extraneous sockets, so the news that they’re trying to patent a 3.5mm headphone jack with an integrated microphone comes as little surprise. Their plan is to squeeze the microphone into the socket and then use the plug aperture and cavity to work as an acoustic path, so that even though it’s not mounted right near the surface it can still pick up audio clearly.

Alternatively, it could cut down the number of holes in a device with a dual-microphone array – usually used for noise reduction – to just one, with the second microphone hiding in the headphone socket. Now, there’s no telling whether Apple actually will use this on any future iPhone – and of course it remains to be seen how it might cope when there’s a set of headphones actually plugged in (but you’re not using an external microphone).

Blue Microphones, as their name suggests, are generally all about the audio, and they’ve a strong reputation among musicians for the quality of their hardware. The Blue Microphones Eyeball 2.0 takes the distinctive Blue Snowflake and discretely adds a pop-out 2.0-megapixel webcam; once we’d finished popping the lens in and out of its spring-loaded silo we set to work reviewing it.

You’re unlikely to mistake the Eyeball 2.0 as anything other than a microphone first. The shiny mesh-covered ball rotates on its twisting mount, and has a sturdy U-shaped metal bracket that – depending on orientation – either hooks onto the top of your laptop display or stands the Eyeball 2.0 up on the desk. On the back is a regular miniUSB port which you can use with the three foot USB cable Blue supply or any you might already have lying around. There’s also a plastic case section which slots onto the back of the Eyeball 2.0′s stand and gives you a place to tuck the cable for transport, together with a rubber disk that, slotted over the rear of the stand, acts as a counterbalance of sorts for using the webcam on top of CRT monitors.

At first glance you could miss the webcam functionality altogether, since the tiny lens is hidden in a spring-loaded nub at the side. Installation didn’t require any specific drivers; we simply plugged the Eyeball 2.0 in and both OS X and Windows recognized it straight away. From there it’s a matter of choosing the appropriate input in whatever app you’re using; on our MacBook Pro we were able to toggle between the Eyeball 2.0 and the built-in iSight webcam through the camera menu in Photo Booth.

In comparison to the iSight, color balance was roughly on a par but the Eyeball 2.0 tends toward over-exposure. Still, there’s more detail and contrast, though fast moving subjects still lead to blurring when you’re recording video. The Blue webcam also has a slightly narrower field of vision.

As for audio, however, the Eyeball 2.0 comes into its own. More sensitive than the in-built microphones of the PC and Mac laptops we compared it with, it also boasts a more balanced range and less of a tendency to lose the bottom end to crunchy mess. Blue are positioning it as ideal for amateur musicians and podcast recorders, and we’d have to agree.

Problem is, the Snowflake offers the exact same audio performance without the somewhat underwhelming webcam functionality, and saves $20/£15 off the list price. With an MRSP of $79.99/£74.95 versus the $59.99/£59.95 of the Snowflake, we’d plump for Blue Microphones’ core skills with the latter and look elsewhere for our video needs.

So, we thought we’d let you all share in the goodness, and give two lucky individuals out there the chance to win a Go Mic. Just follow the break, take a gander at the rules, and then go ahead and throw your hat into the giveaway. You never know, you may pull out a shiny new toy.

What can the Go Mic do? Well, it’s a USB microphone that clips directly to your laptop (or whatever else you need it to clip to). As Samson says, it’s a perfect device to record music or podcasts, amongst other things. You can also use it for voice recognition software, iChat, or even web casting. It’s a plug-and-play designed mic, so it will work with your Mac or PC without a problem. Basically, it’s a great little microphone.

So, here’s the deal. Much like our previous giveaways, you’re going to have to leave us a comment down below. However, this time around, you need to give us a creative, original reason why you want the Samson Go Mic. Whether it be for your new podcast you’ve been wanting to launch, but couldn’t because you don’t have a mic, or you’re heading out to the Congo and you need a field recorder to catch your ideas, the sky is the limit. Yes, we’d like some realism, but hey, if you’re creative enough, you might just get picked.

Furthermore, be respectful of us, yourself, and the other participants. No cursing or other malicious content, please. You’re only allowed one comment, so just make it the best comment you can. And finally, this content is going to last a week, so you’ve got some time to think of a comment if you need to. And next Friday we’ll get in touch with the two winners.

Shure is a name known for audio gear for consumers and professional users. The company makes headphones and a full line of microphones for home users and studios. Shure announced today that its latest line of microphones for home users including the PG27USB and PG24USB are now shipping.

The two microphones connect to PCs using USB allow for recording directly to a computer. Shure claims that both mics are professional caliber and both are Side Address Condenser microphones. The mics are plug-and-play so no software is needed for them to operate.

The units also have a built-in headphone and monitoring port and promise zero latency and a monitor mix control is integrated as well. The difference between the two is that the PG27USB has a flat, neutral frequency response for vocals and a wide variety of instrumental sounds. The PG42USB is designed for use as a lead vocals mic. The PG27USB will sell for $199 and the PG42USB will sell for $249.

Pro-audio manufacturer AKG are looking to the podcasting crowd with their latest microphone, the Perception 120 USB, and hoping that the promise of studio-quality sound will lure them in. The Perception 120 USB hooks up – as you’d expect – via a single USB connection and contains a 24-bit, 128x oversampling analog to digital converter.

It’s compatible with Windows 7, Vista, XP and Mac OS X, and uses a two-third inch condenser capsule paired with a low-mass diaphragm. There’s also an integrated pop filter, switchable bass-cut filter and an attenuation switch.

The AKG Perception 120 USB microphone should land later this month; we’re waiting to hear back from the company on pricing. It comes with the USB cable, a table tripod stand and a swivel mount.

Press Release:

AKG’s New Perception 120 USB Microphone Brings Studio Quality Performance To The Desktop

VIENNA, Austria – In an introduction that couples AKG’s studio mic performance with desktop convenience and versatility, AKG presents the Perception 120 USB Microphone at both the PLASA and IBC shows this September. The Perception 120 USB is the very first USB-equipped microphone from AKG, offering studio-quality sound performance without requiring any installation or drivers.

The Perception 120 USB is a real plug-and-play device that allows users to do podcasts, voiceovers, and studio-quality rehearsal-recordings quickly and easily. It is capable of working with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS X but also the new Windows 7. And for the price, it is one of the only USB microphones with an integrated high-quality Analogue-to-Digital Converter (24-bit, 128x oversampling) for convincing sound quality and low noise.

“The new USB-equipped Perception 120 USB microphones will extend AKG’s successful Perception range,” said Thomas Stubics, AKG’s Product Marketing Manager for Recording and Broadcast. “With the widespread USB standard and its ease of use, this new model allows users without any recording experience to make professional-quality recordings from their home.”

As of 2008, there are about two billion USB devices sold per year, and about six billion sold to date. The USB is a widely known interface for audio equipment like sound cards, active monitors, and outboard equipment, which makes the Perception 120 one of the most versatile microphones available. The Perception 120 includes a two-third-inch condenser capsule with a low-mass diaphragm delivering accurate sonic details an integrated pop filter that avoids plosives, a switchable bass cut filter, and an attenuation switch. The Perception comes complete with everything you need: a tripod table stand, a swivel mount and an USB cable.

It seldom fails to impress me how quickly accessory manufacturers can knock together third-party gadgets for new devices, and Brando is certainly at the top of their game for flooding the market with “do I really need this?” trinkets. Their latest addition is a so-called “Flexible Mini Capsule Microphone” for the iPhone 3GS, intended to take advantage of the thousands of people now recording dreary YouTube videos on their new smartphone.

Unlike the handset’s integrated microphone, which is at the bottom of the handset, the Brando mic can be tilted, rotated and generally angled to point at whatever it is you’re filming. Alternatively you can twist it back to face yourself, ideal for catching every vocal nuance of your voice-over.

Both white and black versions will be on offer, and no battery is required. Gain is listed at 25+dB, but if you’re really looking for polished audio you’d still be better off sourcing a separate, powered microphone. It’ll also play nicely with the iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G and iPod nano 4G, and be priced at $14 when it lands at the end of July.

What the world needs are more concept devices, and thankfully here come Pilotfish with their Ondo to fill that gap. Best known for their work on the Synaptics Onyx interface, Pilotfish have now turned their attention to more media-centric mobile devices with the Ondo cellphone concept, a twistable, touch-sensitive and modular music experience.

A candybar-format device, the Ondo has a three-segment touch-display using OLED panels; each of these can be removed and clipped onto a person or instrument as a standalone microphone. Integrated storage means the segments can also be used to swap data with another Ondo owner, at least in Pilotfish’s concept, and tracks edited on the device can be sent by MMS.

Ondo can be twisted and bent to modify the audio, similar to the whammy bar on a guitar, and there’s a jog-dial for mixing. Since there’s an integrated network connection, Pilotfish envision Ondo owners collaborating remotely on music projects.

Of course, right now the Ondo is just a concept, albeit one that Pilotfish believe commercially possible in the ”near future”. The three displays rely on OLED, while both flat-sheet power and storage is used; as for the flexible housing, that has integrated piezoelectrics to capture movement. They’re currently considering building working prototypes to better demonstrate the Ondo concept.

Press Release:

Pilotfish Launches Ondo Music Editing Phone Concept

Play it, mix it, rock out to it! Ondo enables a more flexible and physical
experience in mobile phones

MUNICH, Germany – April 20, 2009 — Pilotfish, a progressive industrial design
and product development studio based in Munich, Amsterdam and Taipei, today
introduced Ondo, a dedicated music editing phone concept. The Ondo concept
enables OEMs to visualize a new form of user interaction for mobile phones.
User
The target user for “Ondo” is the music enthusiast who seeks to interactively
capture and edit sounds. Going beyond software-based solutions of other
products, it is specifically designed to effectively collect pure sounds and is
specially constructed to create a tactile sound editing experience.
Music Editing
Made from form-sensitive flexible materials, “Ondo” allows the user to modify
recorded sounds by physically twisting and bending the device. Like a guitarist
pulling on a whammy bar, users can feel and hear the musical effects as they
create them.
Jamming
Another innovative feature of “Ondo” are the three removable display ”sticks”. In
their normal state, the “sticks” act as a unified touch display for the mobile
device. When removed, each can be separately clipped onto a musical instrument
or person to capture live sound. Like a portable recording studio, “Ondo” makes
mixing tracks easy, because each “stick” picks up isolated sounds from each
individual instrument. The recordings can be immediately sent via MMS(Multimedia Messaging) around the globe allowing musicians at different
geographical locations to jam together.
Mixing
In party mode, “Ondo” works as a digital mixer enabling the user to create
seamless transitions between songs. This is made easy with interactive touch
functions combined with integrated software support.
Market Opportunities
The advantage of such a device is that a range of services and accessories can
accompany it in order to enhance the sound capturing and editing experience.
From a business perspective, most of the players in the mobile world can benefit:
for example, content creators – by providing sound libraries or musical games
for download; operators – by facilitating increased user interaction; and device
manufacturers – by producing accessories such as input devices, Bluetooth
instruments, etc.
For more information on the Ondo concept, visit www.ondo-phone.eu
For more information on Pilotfish, visit www.pilotfish.eu.

If you like to play the video game, Lips, but enjoy some of the other music-oriented games as well, you’ll be pleased to learn Microsoft is now making the Lips wireless microphones compatible with other games. Fans rejoice!

The Lips mic can soon be used with Rock Band 2 and on Guitar Hero: Metallica right now. This is good news for those that like a variety of these musical games but don’t want to shell out the bucks on peripherals for all of them.

Rock Band 2 will get compatible with the mic starting sometime this summer. But that’s not all Microsoft has up its sleeves. Apparently, the Lips mic will be compatible with other games this year as well. But we’ll just have to wait and see what those are.

The problem is that first, the earbuds constantly fall out of my ears and second, people I’m talking to often have trouble hearing me through the built-in mic. But you might just be able to remedy that problem with the Sanwa Throat Microphone.

This microphone wraps around your neck like some weird futuristic necklace. But it doesn’t work by picking up the sound from your mouth. Rather, it works by picking up the vibrations as you speak at your throat. This transmits very clearly through the mic, making it easy for those you’re talking with to hear you.

So, you might look a little weird, but at least it works pretty good. There’s no information on when the Sanwa Throat Microphone will be available or how much it will cost yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

If all this time you’ve thought the one thing missing from your iPod is a small and convenient microphone, you’re in luck. The ThumbTack Mic from SwitchEasy is small, useable and affordable. And those are three things we here at SlashGear can get behind.

The ThumbTack Mic is pretty darn cute and clever. It’s shaped like, well, a thumb tack and acts as a microphone for your portable devices. You can easily plug it into your iPod nano or iPod touch to capture some audio while out and about.

In fact, it works with third-party apps, so those with the iPod touch will especially find benefit here. You could record memos on the go, utilize voice commanded apps and more. The best thing about this gadget is its price. At just $13, there’s no real risk in trying out the ThumbTack Microphone. And if it works well, you can fake people into thinking you’ve stuck a regular push pin into your iPod!

While Bluetooth headsets have become practically mainstream these days, there’s still a decent amount of users who want both handsfree functionality as well as stereo sound. Sometimes Bluetooth A2DP wireless stereo just doesn’t cut it, and that’s why we’re still seeing new wired headsets developed. iharmonix sent us their Platinum i-Series headphones, with a regular 3.5mm plug ideal for the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry smartphones; SlashGear slapped them in our ears to test them out.

As well as the stereo headset itself, iharmonix include a drawstring carry pouch and three different sizes of ear gels. Not the most comprehensive of bundles, but you’re unlikely to need anything more. On paper, the Platinum i-Series have 11mm drivers and neodymium magnets which, iharmonic claim, give you “dynamic sound and bass”.

Before we’d even got them in our ears, though, our first impression was of the headphones weight. Each of the earbuds – plus the microphone section – is made of polished stainless steel, and iharmonix have done nothing to disguise that. It’s an acquired taste, certainly, and one which split opinions among the SlashGear team.

Equally polarizing are the looks; just as you’ll not forget you’re wearing the Platinum i-Series, neither will others miss them. They’re shiny, chunky and very obvious, as are the iharmonix logos on each of the earbuds.

We had fewer arguments with the way the Platinum i-Series fit, with the three ear gel sizes offering reasonable scope for different ear canals. The smallest really is quite small, which made the i-Series popular with the SlashGear Japan girls. Our only caveat would be that, because of their weight, it can feel as though the earbuds might be pulled out, especially if the microphone section starts swinging. Different members of the team perceived that differently, though, and again your mileage may vary.

Sound quality is fair, although for all iharmonix’s marketing hyperbole the bass is far from strong. That actually suits the headphones, though, with clear mids and reasonable treble (though lacking the sparkle in more expensive headphones we’ve tested) adding up to a pleasingly balanced sound. Microphone quality was high, with callers telling us we came through clearer on the iharmonix than with both Bluetooth headsets and wired headsets (the wired headsets were those that came with the phones we tested the Platinum i-Series with).

The scope of the multifunction button built into the microphone depends on the handset you’re using it with; at its most basic it answers and ends calls, though some phones will also let you pause and skip music tracks with it. Taking up the whole front of the microphone section, it’s easy to press and clicks reassuringly; we have no concerns over build quality.

With an MRSP of $59.99, the iharmonix Platinum i-Series finds itself in a hotly-contested headset segment. We feel its distinctive looks will decide most would-be buyers before the sound gets an audition, but if you can live with the heft and the polish, the audio performance is decent.

Techno-guitarmaker Ovation has just announced another breakthrough in the music world. The Ovation iDea is the first ever acoustic guitar to be equipped with a built-in MP3 recorder for laying down tracks at the touch of a button. Not only can the iDea record tracks, but it can also replay the song so you can play along.

If you would like you can even slow down the track without changing the key so learning a song can be made easier. If that wasn’t enough there is also a built-in condenser microphone that allows you to record vocals alongside your guitar track. Added features allow you to loop or repeat a track for continuous practicing. Of course the iDea has a USB port that allows you to transfer all of your recorded music to a PC or Mac.

The sound quality of this guitar has yet to be determined, it is made of a composite synthetic back instead of the traditional wooden acoustic body. If your old fashion like me, you prefer the traditional style acoustic guitar over the curved body of the Ovation iDea. In any case this guitar seems worth the time to at least check out. The iDea would come in handy for those on the go or who do not have much in terms of recording equipment. Six hundred dollars is not bad for an acoustic guitar, let alone one that records your music.

Accessory manufacturer Incipio have announced a microphone attachment for the iPod nano 4G. Bizarrely named Lloyd, the microphone snaps onto the base of the iPod and allows you to access its onboard sound recorder. There’s also a pass-through headphone connector.

Incipio claim Lloyd is designed to “reduce wind and breath tones”, though it’s unclear whether that means it has any sort of active noise reduction. More likely they’re referring to the physical design of the microphone itself.

Since it only requires connecting to the headphone socket, not the docking connector, it can be pivoted out of the way when you need to recharge or sync (with the cable; obviously you’d need to take it off to dock the iPod). The Incipio Lloyd is available now, in black and white, priced at $17.99.

This microphone works with PCs, PS2, PS3 and the Xbox 360. It connects by means of USB ports and uses the 2.4GHz frequency to maintain a wireless connection. The mic has a USB base that also works as a holder for the device. It can work for up to 30 feet away from the base and comes with two AA batteries to get you started.

The Logitech Cordless Vantage Microphone is supported by many games and will be available in December. You can expect to pay about $80 for it, though, so if you’re in real need for a mic, be sure to do your research first.
