The amount of bandwidth that all wireless carriers have for voice calls and data use is finite. There comes a point where the bandwidth just isn’t there to support more calls and more services in some areas. To help alleviate this bandwidth issue and speed the network overall, most of the major carriers and even some of the smaller ones are moving to carrier VoIP solutions to help spread the load of voice calls over to other parts of the network.

MetroPCS is set to become the next carrier to offer VoIP service to its customers. According to the CEO of the firm, Roger Linquist MetroPCS will start to offer VoIP service via its LTE network in early 2012. MetroPCS is right now migrating its SMS and MMS services over to an IMS-driven VoLTE service and will move the current circuit-switched voice service to the same service as the SMS and MMS messaging.

Currently MetroPCS has CDMA 1X network and LTE network in 14 major markets around the country. The company plans to have LTE service in the same markets it has CDMA x1 service next year. To complete its plans reports claim that metroPCS is keeping an eye on any spectrum that AT&T is forced to shed as part of its bid to acquire T-Mobile.

It’s not often that we speak of Huawei at all, much less on how they’re creating a superphone for Android. This device is what’s possibly a dual-core but by all evidences a single-core processor*-having superphone running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, upgradable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and rocking a 4-inch 854×480 pixel resolution display with an 8-megapixel camera on the back. Sound like a phone that’s going to run you $400 or more? How does sub-$300 off contract sound to you?

This is the Huawei M886 aka Cricket Glory or Huawei Glory, a device that’s coming out on Cricket this November and following up the massively successful Huawei Ascend, aka the “Cheapest Android Phone on the Market.” The Ascend leaves off where the Glory picks up, Android 2.2 Froyo now ANdroid 2.3 Gingerbread on a 9.7mm thick, TFT LCD display toting 1900 mAh battery having device being sold as a pre-paid device in the USA.

Our pal Sascha Segan from PCMag recently got the opportunity to take a hands-on look at this device, some photos he took can be found here in the gallery below:

This device has a few unique features that move it slightly aside from the rest of the pack: first, a hardware feature. The battery cover on this device, aka the entire back of the unit, has a layer of clear plastic over a white innard, making the entire back have a unique 3D-ish appearance. The next difference is in the user interface. While this device takes a mostly vanilla look at Gingerbread, the icons and the switching of homescreens happens quite visibly. Also there’s the ability to switch the locations of applications in your app drawer – a feature we’re wishing for in all future iterations of Android, we’ll have you know.

This device has 2 GB of memory inside along with a microSD card slot for expansion of said memory. This device in its current state has EVDO Rev. B but will ship with Rev. A for Cricket in the USA, and there’s no way to output media to a larger screen at the moment. This factoid may only be temporary however as PCMag has been told that Huawei will be releasing some “surprising” media solutions by the time the device is released.

*Then let’s talk about this processor the device is holding. What Sasha was told was that this device is rolling out with a 1.4-GHz Qualcomm MSM8655T processor which Huawei says is dual core. However, if you take a look at specs for that particular processor, Qualcomm notes that it is single core. What’s the true truth? We shall soon find out!

You the viewer – are you looking forward to more pre-paid superphones like this, or are you happy with your current 2-year contract situations here in the USA?

With T-Mobile soon to be swallowed up by AT&T (probably), MetroPCS will be the most likely choice for many T-Mobile customers looking for a new carrier. That would most likely make Metro PCS the nation’s new fourth-largest wireless carrier, and that is why MetroPCS’s stock jumped up 5% upon the merger announcement. MetroPCS currently has 8.1 million subscribers, up 35% over the last two years (a time period, we should mention, in which T-Mobile lost customers).

MetroPCS targets big city markets and keeps their prices low by only using their own networks in dense urban areas that are cheap to serve. They have been adept at securing roaming agreements to use competitor’s networks in other areas, so their cost to serve 90% of the country is a fraction of what it costs the larger companies. In fact, last year it cost the company only $18.49 a month to serve the average customer. That lets MetroPCS cut its rates to just about half what AT&T and Verizon charge, only $40 per month (including taxes) for unlimited talk, text, and Web, and about $50 per month for the same plan with a 4G smartphone. That’s a pretty impressive profit margin. And since AT&T and Verizon don’t release their cost per customer, but we can bet it’s a lot higher.

MetroPCS, in its annual filing with the SEC, expressed some worry that its costs could go up if the carriers whose networks it leases decide to raise prices: “In some instances, large national wireless broadband mobile services carriers have been reluctant to enter into roaming agreements at attractive rates with smaller and mid-tier national carriers like us, which limits our ability to serve certain market segments, and recent FCC actions to promote automatic roaming do not resolve these difficulties.”

Meanwhile, MetroPCS looks like a great deal if you live in the urban areas it serves. And if you are a T-Mobile customer, you might just be looking their way.

If you don’t know everyone in the video you’re about to watch, you might not get the depth. However, the smoothness of the 4G LTE connection is as apparent as the additional Gs in Snoops new name, thustly MetroPCS has done their job well. See Snoop Dogg (with a double dose of Gs,) Warren G, model Brittany Dailey, and Ted Williams – the man with the Golden Voice all work together to bring you The G Connection in promotion of MetroPCS and the Samsung Galaxy Indulge.

First, have a look at this video and tell us if you understand what’s going on, or what you’d think if you saw such a thing on television right this second – keep in mind that this is brand new:

Now let’s get down to business explaining the players in this masterpiece, each of them one by one:

Ted Williams, the man with the Golden Voice was only a few months ago completely homeless and broke. Have a look at his story here: [CNN report]
Warren G has never been broke, and in fact has been a player and a regulator for over 20 years. The G-Connection is his show in this promotion, and the “Regulators, mount up!” comes from his classic smooth rapping gangster hit: Regulate
Snoop Dogg started his career around the same time as Warren G, having been a partner of his at the time they both hooked up with Dr Dre launching them into superstardom. Snoop has an album called the Doggumentary coming out soon, thus this collaboration (with his type logo modified and in tact) makes perfect sense. Furthermore, his 2007 hit Sexual Seduction features a video style very similar to this new dating show promo.

ALSO there’s an “Indulge with Snoop Dogggg” sweepstakes where you’ve gotta head out to your local metroPCS store to sign up and win. If you win, you get a VIP trip for two to a Snoop concert this summer – this includes airfare and incidentals for two, front-row tickets, backstage passes, and two Samsung Galaxy Indulge phones with metroPCS 4G LTE service. Sounds fine, real fine. Check out the full press release below:

NOTE more videos will be released throughout the day today (and we assume in the near future,) so stay tuned!

METROPCS ANNOUNCES NEW COLLABORATION WITH ICON SNOOP DOGG
Superstar adds more Gs to his name to help introduce the Samsung Galaxy Indulge, the world’s first commercially available 4G LTE Android smartphone, available exclusively from MetroPCS

DALLAS, February 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Snoop Dogggg has doubled down on his G’s through his new collaboration with MetroPCS to introduce the new Samsung Galaxy Indulge™, the world’s first commercially available 4G LTE Android™ smartphone offered only with 4GLTE service from MetroPCS.

“It feels good to be working with MetroPCS and Samsung for the launch of the Galaxy Indulge. I’m stepping it up to 4G’s so my phone can keep up with my demanding, always-connected lifestyle,” said Snoop Dogggg.

Fortunately, any consumer can indulge in the 4G lifestyle like Snoop Dogggg because MetroPCS offers 4GLTE smartphone service plans at about half the cost of other carriers’ 4G smartphone service plans today. With $50 and $60 plans, including all applicable taxes and regulatory fees, MetroPCS delivers unmatched value with unlimited talk, text and 4GLTE Web page browsing, along with data access to streaming audio, video and gaming content, downloads and Android applications on the Galaxy Indulge.

“Indulge With Snoop Dogggg” Sweepstakes
The superstar’s fans can win a rare chance to meet Snoop Dogggg up close and personal by entering the “Indulge with Snoop Dogggg” sweepstakes exclusively at any MetroPCS retail store through March 31 (no purchase necessary to win). One winner will walk away with a VIP trip for two to a Snoop concert this summer, including airfare and incidentals, front-row tickets and backstage passes, as well as two Samsung Galaxy Indulge smartphones with MetroPCS 4GLTE service. More details are available at http://www.metropcs.com/snoop-dogggg-vip-rules.

Video Series
The collaboration also features Snoop Dogggg starring as several characters in the online video series called “The G-Connection,” which is based on popular dating game shows from past decades. The videos also feature rapper and producer Warren G, model Brittany Dailey, and the man with the “Golden Voice,” Internet sensation Ted Williams. The videos were directed by Estevan Oriol, partner at SA Studios. The first of three episodes premieres today at www.youtube.com/MetroPCS.

Additional Chances to Win
In addition, MetroPCS and Samsung are offering more chances to win autographed Snoop Dogggg gear, Samsung Galaxy Indulge smartphones and MetroPCS 4GLTE service on MetroPCS’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/metropcs (no purchase necessary to win). MetroPCS is also offering prizes through giveaways in many of its home metropolitan area markets, including signed “The Doggumentary” CD’s (in stores March 29th).

“We are very excited about teaming up with Snoop Dogggg to show consumers that they can have it all with MetroPCS 4GLTE services and the vast possibilities of the Samsung Galaxy Indulge Android smartphone,” said Phil Terry, senior vice president, corporate marketing, MetroPCS. “Snoop is a great match for our brand and appeals to all of our customers, who want the latest high-end Android smartphones with 4G services at the best value.”

About the Samsung Galaxy Indulge
Powered by the Android version 2.2 (Froyo) operating system (OS), the Galaxy Indulge delivers quick access to more than 200,000 applications from the Android Market™ and complete access to Google Mobile Services, as well as a combination touch screen/QWERTY keyboard, 3 megapixel camera and camcorder with auto-focus, music player, Stereo Bluetooth® capabilities and expandable memory storage up to 32GB.
There’s also Bluetooth and a bundled 4GB microSD card, preloaded with a copy of Ironman 2. Samsung’s TouchWiz UI is also in evidence, together with a 1,500mAh battery.

So far, so basic Android, but of course the kicker with MetroPCS is the price and 4G access. The carrier is offering unlimited data for $60, with the contract-free Samsung Galaxy Indulge priced at $399. It’ll go on sale later this week.

Press Release:

METROPCS AND SAMSUNG MOBILE UNVEIL THE SAMSUNG GALAXY INDULGE, THE WORLD’S FIRST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE 4G LTE ANDROID SMARTPHONE

Consumers can have it all – apps, entertainment and organization tools with lightning fast speeds – at about half the price of other 4G smartphone service plans

DALLAS– February 9, 2011 – MetroPCS Communications, Inc. (NYSE: PCS), the nation’s leading provider of unlimited, no annual contract, flat-rate wireless service, and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the number one mobile phone provider in the U.S. 1, today introduced the world’s first commercially available 4GLTE enabled Android™ smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Indulge™.

At about half the cost of other 4G smartphone service plans today, consumers can truly have it all with MetroPCS’ $50 and $60 4GLTE smartphone service plans, which include all applicable taxes and regulatory fees. MetroPCS is delivering this unmatched value with unlimited talk, text and 4G LTE Web page browsing, along with data access to streaming audio, video and gaming content, downloads and Android applications.

“Our commitment to offering premium, feature-rich smartphones was once again fulfilled today with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Indulge, which will allow consumers to experience the vast benefits of both MetroPCS’ 4GLTE services and the Android operating system,” said Roger D. Linquist, president, CEO and chairman of MetroPCS. “Mobile consumers no longer have to choose between low cost service and high-end Android handsets. Instead, they can truly have it all by being able to select from a full spectrum of feature and smartphones paired with 4GLTE services at an unmatched value.”

Powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo), the Galaxy Indulge is the perfect smartphone for those who want to manage every aspect of their lives from a mobile device. The Galaxy Indulge’s combination touch screen/QWERTY keyboard means consumers can send messages via e-mail, SMS or social media channels through whichever input method they choose.

“The Galaxy Indulge integrates two of Samsung’s core product investments; the Android platform and bringing powerful and intuitive 4G-enabled devices to the U.S. market,” said Omar Khan, chief strategy officer for Samsung Mobile. “The Galaxy Indulge is loaded with the speed of the Android OS, true mobile broadband connectivity and a 1GHz processor with rich multimedia features for premium movie and TV content.”

MetroPCS always told us that the carrier was testing the waters with its $55 unlimited 4G plan, and with the new year come three new packages. The good news is that unlimited 4G – with some limits – is now on offer from $40 a month, including unlimited talk, text and YouTube video access. However, if you use streaming services, real-time internet gaming or want to download video or music, you’ll have to pay a little more.

That’s because MetroPCS differentiate between basic web browsing and so-called “data access services”; the former, plus unlimited YouTube, comes as standard, but if you want the latter then you have to opt for a more expensive tariff. $50 per month gets you 1GB of “data access services” while $60 gets you unlimited access along with MetroSTUDIO premium content.

To be fair, most MetroPCS users are probably going to be content with the new, cheaper, entry-level package, but it is a little more confusion than the carrier’s usual “one price for everything” sales schtick. The carrier’s 4G LTE service is available now in Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Sacramento and San Francisco, and is planned for Atlanta, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando and Tampa in 2011.

Press Release:

MetroPCS’ New 4G LTE Plans Offer Unprecedented Value and Choice with Prices Starting at Just $40

$40, $50 and $60 plans include unlimited talk, text and Web browsing on 4G LTE handsets; Allow consumers to select data access levels to meet their lifestyle

DALLAS – (January 3, 2011) – MetroPCS Communications, Inc. (NYSE: PCS) today announced its new 4G LTE no annual contract service plans that deliver unmatched value to consumers who demand more service flexibility with their entertainment and Web experience.

Starting at just $40 per month, all three 4G LTE rate plans offer affordability, flexibility and predictability with unlimited nationwide talk, text and Web browsing, with all applicable taxes and regulatory fees included. With the $50 and $60 service plans, consumers have more data access service choices to better fit their actual usage of certain streaming audio and video content, real-time Internet gaming, music and video downloads and other media applications. MetroPCS’ other current service plans remain unchanged and continue to offer unlimited talk, text and Web browsing services.

Each of the three 4G LTE service plans offers unique options and features:
· The $40 service plan offers unlimited talk, text, 4G Web browsing with unlimited YouTube access.
· The $50 service plan includes the same unlimited talk, text, 4G Web services and unlimited YouTube access as the $40 plan. Additional features include international and premium text messaging, turn-by-turn navigation with MetroNAVIGATOR™, ScreenIT, mobile instant messaging, corporate e-mail and 1 GB of additional data access, with premium features available through MetroSTUDIO™ when connected via Wi-Fi, including audio capabilities to listen and download music and access to preview and trial video content.
· The $60 service plan provides the same premium features as the $50 plan, plus unlimited data access and MetroSTUDIO premium content such as 18 video-on-demand channels and audio downloads.

“Our customers told us they wanted more video, more sharing of their content and more Web browsing capabilities – they want to have it all with the value and no annual contract that only MetroPCS can deliver,” said Roger D. Linquist, president, CEO and chairman of MetroPCS. “Our 4G LTE network can deliver unlimited voice and mobile broadband data services and, with these new service plans, consumers are in the driver’s seat on how much additional data access and real-time entertainment content they want to pay for on a monthly basis.”

The new 4G LTE rate plans are available in the nine metropolitan areas where MetroPCS currently offers 4G LTE services, including Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Sacramento and San Francisco. MetroPCS plans to expand its 4G LTE services into more metropolitan areas in 2011, including Atlanta, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando and Tampa, and will continue the build-out of its existing 4G LTE metropolitan areas through the year.

If you are on the contract free MetroPCS mobile network here in the US and use an Android device, textPlus and MetroPCS have announced a new partnership that brings free group texting to the Android users on the network. The application can be downloaded free on the Android Market right now.

Once downloaded the user has to use the app to text “!chat” to the textPlus 60611 short code. After that, they can add as many contacts from the device as they want into a group to send out a text message to.

The group messaging option is free on plans with MetroPCS costing $45 and $50 monthly and the user can send as many text messages as they want with the application. textPlus us a popular app with the maker claiming 3.5 billion messages have been sent with the app across all platforms it is offered for since it launched in 2009.

Fallen in love with the Samsung Craft (what, really?) but don’t live in Las Vegas to take advantage of MetroPCS‘ fledgling LTE network? You’ll be pleased to hear, then, that the carrier has turned on its next 4G city: the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex (DFW).

As before, two plans are on offer. The cheapest, at $55 per month with no ongoing agreement, includes unlimited text, voice and data, while the $60 plan throws in access to the new MetroPCS MetroSTUDIO; that offers ringtone, music and video downloads.

The Samsung Craft, meanwhile, is a 3.3-inch AMOLED featurephone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 2GB microSD card and a 3.2-megapixel camera, along with WiFi and the Samsung TouchWiz UI. It’s priced at $299 after a $50 instant rebate.

Interestingly, and which we didn’t notice in MetroPCS’ first press release (though it was there), is that the unlimited 4G data is said to be “initially” included in the $55 plan. We’re guessing this is the carrier’s attempt to cover itself should usage get out of hand, but we’re always wary of potential changes to plans with no indication as to when that might take place.

Update: A MetroPCS spokesperson has given us the following comment:

“At this time, unlimited 4G data is an introductory offer. Unlimited is the key to our business model and as a leader in the low-cost, high tech space we are always trying to provide the best value for our customers. This is a new service so we will evaluate how our customers are using it and therefore will be in a continuous evaluation mode as we roll out our markets.”

Press Release:

MetroPCS Launches Commercial 4G LTE Services in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex

MetroPCS Offers the Only Commercial 4G LTE Experience for Area Consumers

DALLAS – (Sept. 29, 2010) – MetroPCS Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCS) today introduced the first commercial 4G LTE services in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex (DFW) with monthly plans starting at $55, including all taxes and regulatory fees. DFW consumers will experience 4G Web access and unlimited voice and text services on the world’s first commercially available 4G LTE-enabled handset from Samsung Mobile, the Samsung Craft™.

The launch of commercial LTE service in the DFW metroplex follows Las Vegas as cities where MetroPCS is offering 4G LTE service, with additional major metropolitan areas to follow later this year and in early 2011. With a state-of-the-art 4G LTE network infrastructure provided by Ericsson and an advanced entertainment handset with a brilliant AMOLED screen, MetroPCS is providing compelling value to consumers while meeting their growing demand to do more with multimedia applications.

“MetroPCS will continue to expand 4G LTE network coverage into all of our markets through 2011 to offer unmatched value in 4G LTE services on a no-contract basis for all of our customers,” said Roger D. Linquist, president, CEO and chairman of MetroPCS. “The launch of our 4G LTE network in the metroplex is yet another milestone in our expansion and our vision of the Internet going mobile.”
MetroPCS offers monthly 4G LTE service plans for $55 or $60, which include talk, text and a 4G Web experience initially on an unlimited basis. In addition, DFW customers will now have access to new applications and features that take advantage of MetroPCS’ 4G LTE network, including:

MetroSTUDIOSM, available on the $60 service plan, includes access to content that consumers demand, such as full-track downloads, ringtones and ring-back tones, as well as premium video content from NBC Universal, Black Entertainment Television (BET) and Univision, available on-demand and on-the-go from one easy-to-use application.
A new social networking and instant messaging aggregation application, which harnesses notifications, friends and content from Facebook, MySpace and Twitter social networks and AIM, MSN and Yahoo! IM clients into a single interface that consumers can access with one click.
Upgraded MetroNavigator® feature with the addition of voice-activated GPS and turn-by-turn directions.

MetroPCS is initially offering the Samsung Craft in DFW metropolitan area stores and online for $299 plus tax, after $50 instant rebate, while supplies last. The Craft delivers a stunning visual experience with its 3.3 inch AMOLED (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) screen, which comes to life on the 2GB MicroSD card pre-loaded with Paramount Pictures’ hit movie “Star Trek.” The device also includes a combination touch screen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and Samsung’s TouchWiz™ user interface to surf and text message; 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and camcorder; and Wi-Fi capability.

“With the launch of our 4G LTE service and the Samsung Craft, MetroPCS brings everything together at our customers’ fingertips to do more with the mobile Internet every day, whether they’re accessing social networks, finding the best route to work, catching the latest hit TV shows, or downloading and sharing music, photos and videos,” said Tracy Lange, vice president and general manager of MetroPCS Dallas.

MetroPCS’ DFW 4G LTE network will cover the majority of MetroPCS’ existing CDMA network footprint in the DFW Metroplex. 4G LTE network rollouts in the remaining MetroPCS markets are planned for later this year and early 2011. MetroPCS plans to further expand 4G LTE coverage in 2011, along with the launch of additional devices to increase MetroPCS’ portfolio of feature phones, touch screens, smartphones and 4G handsets.

The Craft is a featurephone, with a 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera, WiFi, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. Metro PCS also throw in a copy of Star Trek on the bundled 2GB microSD card. When you’re outside of LTE coverage (which, unless you live in Vegas, is likely to be most of the time) it falls back onto CDMA networks.

Metro PCS also have a $60 per month service, which throws in MetroStudio access, an audio/video download store powered by RealNetworks. More importantly, they say they’ll be concentrating on broadening 4G coverage over Q4 2010 and into 2011, though there’s no specific rollout schedule at present.

Press Release:

MetroPCS Launches First 4G LTE Services in the United States and Unveils World’s First Commercially Available 4G LTE Phone

World’s First Commercially Available LTE Handset Allows Consumers to Do More with Entertainmentand Provides a Faster Web Experience

DALLAS – (Sept. 21, 2010) – Today, MetroPCS Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCS) became the first mobile operator to launch commercial 4G LTE services in the United States, offering talk, text and 4G Web access starting as low as $55 per month including taxes and regulatory fees. MetroPCS is also offering the world’s first commercially available 4G LTE enabled handset, the Samsung Craft™. Service will initially be available in Las Vegas, Nev., with service expanding into the remaining MetroPCS cities throughout the year.
As the pioneer of the unlimited, no-annual-contract, flat-rate wireless services space, MetroPCS is once again leading the industry as the only no-annual-contract operator to offer 4G LTE services. With a state-of-the-art 4G LTE network in Las Vegas and the world’s first commercially available 4G LTE handset, MetroPCS continues to provide compelling value to consumers while meeting their growing demands to do more with multimedia and entertainment applications.
“The Internet is going mobile, and we are placing the true power of the Internet directly in our customers’ hands, when and where they need it. By offering affordable, predictable and flexible 4G services on a no-contract basis, MetroPCS delivers immediate benefits to our customers and is positioned to meet their evolving needs well into the future,” said Roger D. Linquist, president, CEO and chairman of MetroPCS. “We are delivering a 4G LTE service that is unmatched in value and positions MetroPCS as a full-service broadband wireless provider – a giant step for our business.”
Consumers will be able to experience 4G LTE services by selecting one of two service plans – $55 or $60 – designed for value-conscious consumers. In addition to offering talk, text and a faster 4G Web experience initially on an unlimited basis, MetroPCS is introducing many new applications and features that take advantage of its 4G LTE network, including:
MetroSTUDIOSM, powered by RealNetworks, is available on the $60 service plan. MetroSTUDIO is a new source of multimedia content, including access to full-track downloads, ringtones and ring-back tones, as well as premium video content from NBC Universal, Black Entertainment Television (BET) and Univision, available on-demand and on-the-go from one easy-to-use application.
A new social networking and instant messaging aggregation application, which harnesses notifications, friends and content from the Facebook, MySpace and Twitter social networks and AIM, MSN and Yahoo! IM clients into a single interface that consumers can access with one click.
Upgraded MetroNavigator® feature with the addition of voice-activated GPS and turn-by-turn directions.
MetroPCS is initially offering the Samsung Craft in Las Vegas metropolitan area stores and online for $299, after $50 instant rebate, plus tax, while supplies last. As the world’s first commercially available multi-mode 4G LTE/CDMA handset, the Samsung Craft was created with Web and multimedia content in mind, delivering a stunning visual experience.
The device offers:
Incredible clarity and rich color for viewing crystal-clear multimedia and video images with its 3.3 inch AMOLED (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) screen.
A 2GB microSD card preloaded with Paramount Pictures’ hit movie “Star Trek.”
A combination touch screen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and Samsung’s TouchWiz™ user interface to surf and text message with whichever input format users prefer.
A 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and camcorder to capture images that can be shared while on the go on MetroPCS’ fast 4G network.
Wi-Fi capability.
“We continue to see our customers use mobile data services, and the majority of them rely on their handset as their primary access to the Web,” said Tom Keys, chief operating officer of MetroPCS. “Our 4G service, the Samsung Craft and applications like MetroSTUDIO deliver exactly what our customers demand: more of the entertainment they love, a desktop-like Web experience and the ability to do more and share more of their content such as text, photos and videos with friends and family.”
MetroPCS’ Las Vegas 4G LTE network, which was built through a partnership with Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), will cover the majority of MetroPCS’ existing CDMA network footprint in Las Vegas. 4G LTE network rollouts in the remaining MetroPCS markets are planned for later this year and early 2011.

While consumers will get to play with the SCH-r900, MetroPCS will have to get to grips with Samsung Mobile’s infrastructure and IP multimedia subsystem tech, which will form the backbone of the new LTE network. That adds up to real-time streaming video-on-demand and super-fast browsing speeds.

The MetroPCS LTE network should begin to roll out in the second half of 2010, though so far while the carrier has said it plans to cover “several” metropolitan markets, it has only named the Las Vegas metropolitan area. We’ve still yet to catch sight of the SCH-r900 itself, too, though we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled at CTIA Wireless; the photo above is of an unnamed Samsung LTE device spotted all the way back at CTIA Wireless 2009 by PC Mag.

Press Release:

Samsung Mobile Announces Commercial LTE 4G Infrastructure and Handset at CTIA Wireless

LTE Infrastructure and Handset to Launch Commercial Service in the Second Half of 2010 for the MetroPCS Las Vegas Metropolitan Area

LAS VEGAS, Mar 24, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile)(1), the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S.( 2), introduced today at International CTIA Wireless 2010 in Las Vegas one of the first commercially available LTE network infrastructures and LTE-enabled, multi-mode, CDMA, 4G handset, the Samsung SCH-r900.

Samsung Mobile’s advanced commercial LTE network products will allow wireless operators like MetroPCS Communications, Inc. (PCS 7.12, -0.08, -1.11%) , the nation’s leading provider of unlimited, flat-rate, no signed contract wireless communications service, to provide advanced services using LTE compatible handsets as well as new and innovative network solutions. LTE makes possible services such as real-time streaming video on demand (VOD), music downloads, enhanced Web browsing capabilities at high download speeds, and utilizing voice communications to increase productivity and access downloadable applications. MetroPCS plans to initially deploy a commercial LTE network in various metropolitan markets, including the Las Vegas metropolitan area where Samsung Mobile LTE network products will be used, in the second half of 2010.

Samsung Mobile’s commercial LTE network products leverage years of 4G orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) commercial network experience and have flexible bandwidth support of 1.4 to 20 MHz standards. Samsung Mobile’s network infrastructure supports a wide portfolio of enhanced node B (eNB) products, including rack types, remote radio heads, picocells and distributed antenna system (DAS) hosts.

Samsung Mobile’s network solutions feature a scalable, single rack, enhanced packet core (EPC) along with IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) products, to support rapid deployment and end-to-end quality control through devices.

Samsung Mobile’s infrastructure network products also feature an open architecture which supports multi-vendor inter-operation through initiatives such as the LTE Strategic Test Initiative (LSTI). Samsung Mobile’s network infrastructure will incorporate high efficiency multimode amplifiers and energy saving mode.

The Samsung SCH-r900 will be one of the first commercially available LTE-enabled, multi-mode, CDMA, 4G handsets in the United States when MetroPCS launches the handset in the second half of 2010. The introduction of the Samsung SCH-r900 is part of Samsung Mobile’s collaboration with MetroPCS to deliver advanced LTE handsets, services and infrastructure.

Last week Verizon unveiled new unlimited calling plans for its users. Shortly after Verizon made its announcement, AT&T announced its own new calling plans. Today MetroPCS is unveiling new calling plans for pre-paid users.

The new calling plans start at $40 monthly and go up to $60 monthly and provide unlimited talk, text, and web. The cool part is that the price for the service includes all state and local fees and taxes as well as regulatory fees. That means $40 monthly is exactly what you pay.

That is a good price and the only real downside is that some of the most popular smartphones are not available on the network. At $40 monthly and no contract metroPCS service will look good to many users out there. Handsets start at $29.99 for the network.

There are times when a press release makes you do a double-take, and MetroPCS‘ this morning has prompted just that momentary disbelief. You’re looking at the Samsung Code SCH-i220, the first Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone on the MetroPCS network; yes, while everyone else is getting up to speed with Windows Mobile 6.5, MetroPCS are taking time out to celebrate their first device running the superseded OS.

Of course, there’s some upside to going with MetroPCS rather than the other carriers, and in this case it’s their $50 everything-in plan. Once you’ve shelled out the $299.99 for the Samsung Code itself, $50 per month gets you unlimited voice calls, SMS and data, which neatly undercuts what’s on offer elsewhere.

As for the Code, that has a full QWERTY keyboard, 3G, stereo Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera and a microSD slot content with up to 32GB cards. It also has the WizPro UI, Exchange support and all the usual 6.1 Standard software treats. So, not something you’ll be using to vanquish iPhone 3GS toting friends, perhaps, but at least you’ll likely have some spare cash at the end of the month.

You can customize the interface using all sorts of fonts and wallpapers of your choosing. Plus, the phone comes with two interchangeable faceplates in pink and grey, however, you can buy more to fit your preferences.

Features include email, a web browser, ChatLINK, Bluetooth, voice dialing, a camera and more. We don’t know how much the Samsung Tint will cost, but you should be able to get it from MetroPCS now.

The news is non-stop from CTIA 2009 today and wouldn’t you know it that there was a little surprise tucked away in the endless slew of press releases? MetroPCS is will be getting a new touchscreen phone from Samsung called the Finesse.

This phone is actually pretty similar to the Instinct and the Delve in that it uses the TouchWiz interface. However, this is not a smartphone–it just looks like one! It features a 3-inch 240 x 400 touchscreen display, 3G, web browser and mobile IM. It also has a GPS application, a media player and an email app.

It seems this phone is available now without a contract. However, since it’s not subsidized, the Samsung Finesse will cost you $349. A tad pricey for the feature set, but may be worth it if you’re not looking to get roped into a two-year contract.
