It isn't all that often we get to talk about remote-controlled cars here at SlashGear, but the one we're covering today comes with a few cool gadget-related features. Say hello to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, a new RC car from the folks at Silverlit. While it looks like a normal RC car at first - and largely is - there are a couple key differences between this and other RC cars we're used to seeing. Read The Full Story

Welcome to Thursday evening everyone! Today a collection of BlackBerry 10 slides outed video chat and screen sharing through BBM, and we learned that smartphone and tablet activations rose to huge numbers of Christmas day earlier this week. There's a new survey from Pew and NPD that suggests tablets are beginning to replace eReaders and print, while we heard that Apple might be thinking about producing the Mac Mini here in the US. New Popemobile keeps Pontiff on show

, Dec 12th 2012 Discuss [0]

The new @Pontifex account isn't the only toy Pope Benedict XVI has to play with this month: there's also a new Popemobile, courtesy of his friends at Mercedes. The new car - in effect a bullet-proof phone booth on the back of a Mercedes M-Class - replaces the previous Pontiff pod, and features larger viewing panels and more room for his holiness to stand, despite actually having a lower roofline. Apparently, Mercedes-Benz's idea of the future is more than a little post-apocalyptic because its concept vehicle for the design competition is a massive off-road 4 x 4. Read The Full Story

Daimler and Renault-Nissan duo on eco-gas engine and more

, Sep 29th 2012 Discuss [0]

Car manufacturers aren't betting the farm on all-electric and hybrid cars; gas engines are still going to be around for a while, and Renault-Nissan and Mercedes-owner Daimler plan to squeeze the very best out of them. A freshly inked collaboration between the firms will see them double up on a new, turbocharged powerplant that - despite using gas not hydrogen fuel-cells or batteries - will deliver "a significant improvement in fuel economy as well as low emissions." Guinness World Record set for a golf ball caught in a moving car

, Jun 21st 2012 Discuss [0]

At right around 120 mph it was time for former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard to stick his hand out of his $200,000 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster supercar to make the catch. In his hand (nearly) plopped a standard sized golf ball hit by British pro golfer Jake Shepherd from 275 meters away. As it turns out, catching the ball in your hand isn't one of the requirements for the Guinness World Record to be won - and good thing, too, as they actually ended up catching the ball here in the middle of the car's front two seats. 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG gets 550 HP

I'll admit that generally I find SUVs to be very boring. These big people movers tend to be underpowered leading to slovenly performance. That doesn't appear to be the case with the new Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG SUV that has officially debuted as a 2013 model. This full-size SUV gets a twin turbo 5.5L V8 engine. Read The Full Story

The Auto tech wake-up: Free iPads and Apple-trained tutors

Fiendishly complex car dashboards aren't just a concern to safety regulators but auto manufacturers too, worried that new buyers may not only fail to use gadgetry-packed vehicles but may come to resent them. Cadillac's new 2013 ATS may be tempting gas-heads with its sharp styling and engine options, but the fact that the GM-owned company will throw in a free iPad - preloaded with a new CUE training tool to help owners get the best of their car - should help take some of the sting out of the touchscreen dashboard too. It's not just Cadillac which is reacting, however; other car manufacturers are even raiding well-known computing firms for their tech tutor talent.
