Pogoplug have announced their second-generation device, and it aims to build on the usability of the original multimedia sharing brick.  As well as a new hardware design, with four USB 2.0 ports versus the first-gen model’s single port, there’s also new software with better integration with social media and online galleries such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.  The core concept, however, remains the same: a sixty-second setup, basically amounting to plugging in at least one hard-drive, an ethernet connection and power, and registering the Pogoplug serial number to a free account online.

One of Qualcomm’s more low-key demonstrations from today is actually the one thing you can try most readily yourself.  Skifta aims to make media shifting more straightforward, using a single client PC or Mac that can then be accessed by any DLNA and UPnP client in your home or remotely.  The system works using a simple web-based interface which will work on your desktop or cellphone browser (the Skifta team had an HTC Hero on hand to do just that), and then that content from pretty much any DLNA device gets funnelled around.

Perhaps it’s a 2009 thing and, come the new year, packaging will won’t enthral us so, but for now there’s a great deal of geeky appeal in how manufacturers choose to present their tech.  Cowon have generally been associated more with audio performance than they have with style, but it looks like some of the “shape up” message is getting through: DAP Review have just taken delivery of the iAudio 9 PMP, and as their unboxing photoset shows there’s obviously been a lot of thought put into how it’s packaged.

Remember FLO TV?  We’d forgive you if Qualcomm’s standalone streaming TV handheld had slipped your mind; after all, the market for a dedicated device for mobile TV (that’s already available on certain mainstream cellphones) seems pretty limited.  Still, if you’ve been saving your pennies and waiting anxiously to pick up a FLO TV Personal Television, salvation is at hand: it’s going on sale today.

Boxee has long been the darling of the homebrew DVR crowd, turning the Apple TV into a far more capable – and less iTunes-centric – media system and brightening DIY HTPCs no end.  Now the company has announced its plans for an off-the-shelf Boxee Box, which will deliver the same sort of experience but without the need to build it youself.

Gadgets leaked by text are far less exciting than blurry, hurriedly-snapped photos, but we won’t turn up our noses at a preview no matter the method.  It now appears that Cowon have a touchscreen MID in the works, the Cowon W2, according to a test page at the Bluetooth SIG, though specifications are still scant.

If our assumptions are correct, this coming week should see Sony Ericsson officially unveil their first Android smartphone, the handset variously known as the Sony Ericsson Rachael (or Rachel), XPERIA X3 and X10 and – most recently – the Sony Ericsson Infinity.  We’ve already seen a video demo of what Sony Ericsson’s custom UI might look like (and darned pretty it is too) but now a second demo has emerged and gadzooks it has us interested.

ipod headset patent application diagram 1 340x500Apple patent applications either meet with resounding “I want that, give that to me now!” or “meh, why?” and it seems the reception to these iPod Bluetooth Headset illustrations is leaning toward the latter.  The patent application shows a device similar in shape to the existing Apple Bluetooth headset, but that would have a detachable second earbud, an integrated display and onboard storage.

That storage would turn the headset into a full-blown iPod, similar to the shuffle.  You would also be able to record voice notes, since it would have an integrated microphone, and of course it could be used for hands-free calling in the regular way.  Apple’s application also describe a form of basic automatic volume adjustment that would change earpiece volume depending on the ambient noise picked up by the microphone.
