Nokia Belle Refresh released worldwide today

Just this afternoon Nokia released a significant software update to their Symbian collection of devices going by the name of Nokia Belle Refresh. This update will affect a whole batch of Nokia smartphones including the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia X7 and Nokia Oro. The Nokia E6 will also be updated later this week while the Nokia 500 is set to pop up within a few weeks from now. Read The Full Story

Barnes & Noble adds maps to Nook with skobbler

Barnes & Noble’s Nook tablets are limited in their mapping abilities, currently relying on Google's web interface to access any kind of maps. That’s set to change today, as the company has announced a partnership with skobbler that will see the Nook tablets gain the ability to natively search and view maps. It’s an interesting move from Barnes & Noble to avoid using Google’s services, although we imagine the advent of the Nexus 7 and its low price point has made the company’s options clearer. Those residing on foreign shores hoping to experience a piece of England without buying an expensive plane ticket can do so with new high-resolution images courtesy of Google Maps. Google has added a couple of new features to Maps, including the ability to use Street View on Downing Street. Users can now peruse the outside of number ten, the famous residence of the country’s prime ministers, and Google has also started to roll out new high resolution map images for various countries across the world. Parrot partners with senseFly and Pix4D on mapping UAVs

Parrot, the maker of the famous AR.Drone, has today announced two new ventures with companies chasing similar goals. The first is a $2.5 million investment with aerial mapping specialist Pix4D. That will see drones creating mapping solutions and geographical information using Pix4D's software. Pix4D will be providing the necessary imaging algorithms that helps the drones make 3D maps of the areas they fly over, while Parrot’s investment will help boost development. Read The Full Story

IARPA awards millions for worldwide image mapping project

This week ObjectVideo is one of several multi-million-dollar contract winners with IARPA, the Intelligence Advanced Research Project Activity, for investigation into a technology that will geolocate any image on a massive map of the planet. This technology will "geolocate an outdoor image or video from anywhere on the land surface of the world via the use of publicly-available information." This geolocation task will have users able to utilize open-source knowledge to locate any photo or video they've got on hand with precision - a scary yet exciting concept indeed! Read The Full Story

Microsoft adds 215 TB of new Bird’s Eye imagery to Bing Maps

Microsoft is significantly ramping up the amount of imagery available to users of Bing Maps. Late last month Bing Maps received 165 TB of new imagery to round out its offerings. Apple Maps spotted for OS X desktop use

Google offline Maps update now live: YouTube adds preloading

Google is on a roll today. In addition to introducing the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean, the company has updated some of its services to add new features. Maps is one example, with the Android version of the app seeing an update that will let users save maps offline to their devices. Apple Maps spurs full Google Maps app
