University of California Berkeley Researchers Create Portable Laser Backpack, Used to Map 3D Interiors

While Google is busy mapping out the exterior world, where all our streets and buildings are, there hasn't been much work on the interior part of the whole thing. But, considering the amount of security issues that may be red flagged in any kind of effort, it will probably be a few years before something like this portable laser backpack, which is used to create 3D maps of internal spaces, sees the light of day in the private market. But, that doesn't mean the Air Force can't get their hands on it.

Google have updated Google Maps for mobile 4.1 for Android devices, adding in much requested functionality like the ability to switch between Google accounts in the app - handy for tracking different Latitude and Buzz contacts - as well as making UI and other changes.  As for eye-candy, the 4.1 brings with it the ability to set maps as homescreen Live Wallpaper, together with a new Latitude widget.

Google Maps Navigation hack blocked outside of US

Google appear to have closed off the loophole that allowed users of Android smartphones to access the Google Maps Navigation beta outside of the US.  Tutorials explaining how to unlock the software - which was announced back in October - appeared in late November, and showed how workarounds for Google's location limitations could enable the turn-by-turn navigation for users in the rest of the world.  Unfortunately a software update for Google Maps on Android this weekend appears to have cut off those workarounds.

Google has obviously tired of waiting for handset manufacturers to push out Android 2.0 to existing handsets before users can play with the Google Maps Navigation beta, and as such has released the turn-by-turn software for Android 1.6 devices.  Available now in the Android Market, Google Maps Navigation for Android 1.6 delivers the same topographical layers, voice guidance and automatic rerouting as we found so useful on the Motorola DROID.
