Magellan makes navigation devices for all sorts of uses form cars and RVs up to iPhone apps to get you where you need to go. The company has announced a new accessory that will work with its RoadMate 1700 or RoadMate 9055 GPS navigation devices for cars and trucks. The new accessory is called the Magellan Wireless Backup-Camera. It attaches to the vehicles rear license plate and needs no wire to the GPS device to work.

The camera will activate as soon as the car is put into reverse and will change the image on the screen of the GPS device to show what is behind the driver. The camera is dust, waterproof, and has a wide-angle 120-degree lens. The transmitter sits in the car’s trunk and is also dust and waterproof. The camera has a wireless range of 45-feet and can be adjusted for up to 45-degrees for the best image on different vehicles.

The camera kit will ship with the camera, transmitter, wireless receiver, power adapter for the vehicle, and the hardware needed for install. It will be offered on Amazon.com and via automotive specialty shows for $149.99. It looks like the only wire you need to run is the power for the camera and for the receiver.

With the adoption of smartphones, many consumers are relying on their phone to direct them to their destination rather than a GPS. Why clutter your life with two devices when you can easily make do with one? This is no doubt one of the reasons Magellan is rolling out the RoadMate 5175T-LM; it has built in WiFi, a web browser, and a new more robust trip planner called TourDirector. A portable web browser with no data plan does sound appealing, but can these new features keep the GPS competitive in the evolving smartphone world?

One of the biggest complaints consumers have had in the past with any GPS was the costly expense of updating the maps. In some cases the new map download was more than half the price of simply buying another GPS. Owners of the RoadMate 5175T-LM will no longer have to worry, as free lifetime map updates are included with purchase. This will help the GPS stay more competitive, since Google Maps users never need to purchase upgrades.

The web browser is also a nice touch. Not everyone has a smartphone yet, and browsing the web is very cumbersome on most traditional cell phones. Giving users the ability to use the GPS for quick browsing may cause some consumers to delay the purchase of a smartphone and simply rely on their GPS. Not having a monthly data plan or other monthly charges is also another benefit over a smartphone.

The Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM has a 5 inch hi-resolution screen that can be viewed in portrait or landscape. The suggested retail price is $299.99 and is likely to hit stores soon. With that kind of price tag, will consumers opt for the GPS, or decide to go for something with more features like a tablet? The RoadMate 5175T-LM definitely solves some of the main issues that have frustrated GPS users for years, but will it be enough to compete against new feature rich smartphones and tablets?

So you’d like some deals, yes? I’d like some deals, we’d ALL like some deals. But do you want to go out into the streets and risk getting punched in the face, that’s the real question. Here at SlashGear, we know your pain. We know you want to get a sweet discount on your favorite device, service, or strange product (my favorite), but you want to know if you’re going to have to jump out of bed to do it, or if you’re going to be able to just chill in your Turkey-basted leftovers haze. Therefor the first way we’re separating deals here in The SlashGear Black Friday Deal Guide of Complete Excellence is in two categories: Online and In the Streets. This is also a LIVE post, meaning we’ll be adding to it as that faithful day approaches.

Now remember, these are hand-picked by our staff, and almost certainly are the best deals you’re going to find on the products (or similar products) sold on Black Friday. If you’ve got any additions or suggestions you’d like to make, feel free to comment below and we’ll more than likely add them to the big lists. This list is centered around electronics, but isn’t limited to them, as we know you love accessories and wacky weirdness as well.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – July 14, 2010 – Magellan today unveiled the next generation of its award-winning, rugged eXplorist handheld GPS devices for the outdoor recreation market.

The new eXplorist 510, 610 and 710 devices allow adventurers to navigate to outdoor destinations worldwide, capture geotagged photos along the way, and share their experiences online when they return home. Each eXplorist model combines high-sensitivity GPS, an intuitive user interface, easy-to-read mapping and accurate navigation. The new series of handheld GPS units are being revealed at the OutDoor Trade Fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany, and will be available to consumers inNorth America, Europe, and many other countries worldwide in the 4th quarter, 2010.

“With the popularity of social networks, the GPS industry is shifting towards more online experience sharing,” said Justin Doucette, Director, Outdoor Product Marketing, Magellan. “There are many sites that allow for geographic and multimedia data to be posted and shared with others. The eXplorist series allows users to bring their adventures home with them, catalog for future reference, and share online with family and friends.”

All three new eXplorist handheld GPS units come equipped with a camera, microphone, and speaker to enable users to record and share their adventures with friends.

Each eXplorist device features a 3.0-inch color touch screen, a 3.2 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus, microphone and speaker to record geo-referenced images, videos, and voice notes. All products in the eXplorist series are waterproof (IPX-7) and come preloaded with the most detailed worldwide map in the industry. Magellan’s World Edition map includes a complete road network for the U.S., Canada, Western Europe and Australia, as well as water features, urban and rural land use, and a realistic shaded relief background.

The top-of-the-line eXplorist 710 combines the best of on-road and off-road navigation. Built-in maps get adventurers from doorstep to trailhead to summit and back. The eXplorist 710 includes both Magellan’s highly detailed Summit Seriestopographic map and its City Series turn-by-turn map which allows users to navigate their vehicles through busy city streets on their way to their outdoor adventures. The eXplorist 610 and 710 feature a 3-axis electronic compass and a barometric altimeter that provide precise orientation, accurate elevation information, and enables for weather pattern tracking.

Each model in the eXplorist series also includes several innovative features, such as Magellan’s award-winning OneTouch™ favorites menu, enabling users to instantly access bookmarked locations, searches, and functions. The industrial design incorporates silent proximity alarms. And, to complement the 3.0-inch touch screen, each device has two customizable hard buttons to take a photograph, mark a waypoint, or provide quick access to a number of other preferred features.

The new eXplorist devices also include essential outdoor features such as expandable memory, paperless geocaching, GPX compatibility, 16 hours of battery life, high sensitivity GPS enabling 3-5 meters of accuracy, vertical profiling, a digital almanac, track summary statistics and area calculation.

The Magellan eXplorist 510 GPS device will be introduced at an M.S.R.P. of USD $349.99, the eXplorist 610 at an M.S.R.P. of USD $449.99, and the eXplorist 710 at an M.S.R.P. of USD $549.99. The units will ship with a standard mini USB cable and 2 lithium disposable AA batteries. With the purchase of a Magellan® eXplorist GPS device customers will receive a 30-day free premium membership to http://geocaching.com.

The new generation of eXplorist GPS handheld devices joins several other new introductions by Magellan this year in the outdoor navigation market. The eXplorist GC, a device 100% dedicated to geocaching, and the ToughCase™, a device that transforms your iPhone or iPod Touch into a rugged, handheld GPS device, were launched earlier this year.

There’s also a 1,840mAh battery in there too, which Magellan reckon is sufficient to double your iPhone’s runtimes, while the SiRFstar III GPS chipset is accurate down to three meters. It’s not just usable with the company’s own RoadMate software, either; just about any GPS app in the App Store should get the positioning boost.

You can’t exactly call the ToughCase slick or minimal, but there’s full access to all the regular iPhone/iPod touch controls together with indicators showing its own battery status. A mounting clip on the back lets it be easily used with Magellan’s various in-car, bike and other mounts. It’ll work with the iPhone 3G and 3GS (though not the iPhone 4) together with the iPod touch 2nd- and 3rd-generation, and is available now priced at $199.99.

Press Release:

Magellan GPS Launches Rugged, Waterproof ToughCase for iPhone and iPod touch

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (June 29, 2010) – Magellan GPS today launched the ToughCase, a refined yet rugged protective case, giving iPhone and iPod touch waterproof capabilities, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor professionals.

Available worldwide, featuring built-in GPS, ToughCase enhances the accuracy of location-based and GPS applications for iPhone 3G and iPod touch, while protecting the device and providing unmatched accessibility to all iPhone and iPod touch features.

“The ToughCase is the ideal solution for all outdoor users. From kayakers to golfers, mountain bikers to construction workers, it provides a level of protection and performance previously unavailable in other cases,” said Justin Doucette, Director of Product Marketing for Magellan GPS. “The ToughCase protects against harmful elements such as dust, rain, mud, water and snow.”

The unique case design allows 100 percent access to Apple’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface, allowing users to receive and place calls while the device is protected. The ToughCase meets IPX-7 waterproof standards, enabling the device to be submerged at a depth of 1-meter for up to 30 minutes. The integrated 1840 mAh battery will double the life of the device based on normal usage and the built-in high sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS chipset delivers up to 3 meters of accuracy.

The ToughCase is compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (second and third generation). The ToughCase will be available at MagellanGPS.com and Apple Stores at www.apple.com. The ToughCase retails at an MSRP of USD $199.99.

ToughCase extends Magellan’s comprehensive solutions for iPhone and iPod touch, which include the Magellan RoadMate turn-by-turn navigation app and the Magellan Premium Car Kit – an innovative 3-in-1 vehicle mount for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and second and third generation iPod touch enhancing their performance as a hands-free navigation solution.

The Magellan RoadMate turn-by-turn navigation app is available for $49.99 from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

If you’ve ever used a PND (or a PND app on a smartphone or similar) with automatic traffic updates, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of the device warning you about an upcoming jam while you’re already snarled up in it. Magellan‘s latest standalone PND, the RoadMate 3065 Commuter Edition, reckons it can change all that: rather than starting to look for traffic updates when you begin your journey, “Traffic Wakeup” powers up the device at a preset time so as to cache the road conditions in advance.

“In many cases, traffic information on your GPS can be delayed up to 20 minutes. A delay could mean that you have begun your commute and are already in a traffic situation which could have been avoided. The Magellan RoadMate 3065 Commuter includes the premium Traffic Wakeup feature. Traffic Wakeup automatically powers on your GPS at the time you set and provides real-time traffic updates. Easily have traffic updates ready for you before you even leave for your destination.” Magellan description

Fresh through the FCC, the RoadMate 3065 manual describes the Traffic Wakeup feature as a premium app, which implies you may have to pay extra for it. Still, the functionality is pretty straightforward – turn on earlier, grab data earlier, hopefully then power off in the meantime so that the battery doesn’t expire mid-way through your actual journey.

The rest of the PND’s functionality are apparently pretty much par for the course, with control via a large touchscreen and ports including a microSD slot and mini-USB. No word on specific release dates or pricing, at this stage.

Magellan’s hefty 7-inch PND, the RoadMate 1700, has now got a price and a release date, with the touchscreen navigator arriving for preorder on Amazon. Set to hit shelves on October 10th, according to Amazon (while Magellan themselves seem to think it’s already on sale), the WVGA PND will cost $299.

That gets you integrated AAA TourBook and Roadside Assistance, together with the company’s OneTouch UI that promises easier access to frequently searched-for addresses, favorites and other common details. The 1700 is preinstalled with US, Canada and Puerto Rico mapping, and has highway lane assistance, spoken street names and route-optimization for multi-destination journeys.

Since you can’t take on mobile phone navigation apps without a few added extras these days, Magellan have thrown a couple of neat tricks into the RoadMate mix. The 1700 has a microSD card slot, for use as a PND, but also has a video-in jack which means you can use it as a larger display with your iPod or other video source. Bizarrely, though, they don’t supply any cables to actually do that, so we can see many people never actually realizing the feature exists.

It’s looking like devices have a way of showing up without anyone’s consent now a days. At least, the consent of those who make said gadgets. And now that the Magellan RoadMate 1700 has graced the spacious universe of the internet, we can chalk up another victim. This time around we get some GPS-loving action, and while many of you may be thinking there’s too many of these things out there on the market already, this little piece of guided technology is just amibitious enough with its standard features, that it could start pulling you away from those other devices.

First and foremost, the Magellan RoadMate 1700 is seven-inches of widescreen pleasure. It’s finger friendly to say the least, and it boasts a pretty clear image for you to stare at, and poke mercilessly. It’s gone up on a few retailer’s websites, boasting the standard RoadMate features, which are not limited to: entire maps of the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada; on board AAA TourBook lists; text-to-speech; a MicroSD card slot for memory expansion; and six million points of interest.

Of course, as these things go, there isn’t any word on a release date at this point. Going by what some retailers are saying, such as Best Buy, they’ve got a target window between September 14th and 21st. They’ve got the price at $299.99, like the Magellan Maestro 4700 from a few months back. If the release date pans out like we think it will, then September just got a bit heavier with its tech releases, and we’re beginning to wonder if our pocketbooks are going to be able to keep up.

The Maestro 4700 also supports traffic updates, although it requires the Traffic Link adapter which is sold separately. Obviously there’s no word on when we can expect to see the PND on shelves, but we wouldn’t expect to have to wait too long.

MiTAC are the parent company of subsidiaries Mio and GETAC, both known for their GPS products. It’s possible that the Magellan product range could be integrated with the Mio range, or it could continue until end-of-life under the Magellan brand which would then be retired.

Earlier this month, Panasonic announced it would be withdrawing from the European satnav market, faced with dramatically falling prices. The standalone GPS market has suffered from the rise in mobile handsets with integrated GPS and data connectivity, with the market becoming saturated and buyers unwilling to spend on premium devices.

That company has been a little quiet lately. But yesterday, they announced their newest in-car GPS device and it’s called the Magellan Maestro 4350 series.

These new models include the Maestro 4350 and the Maestro 4370. Both are super portable and feature the OneTouch interface, offering up fast and easy selection of favorited destinations. This makes it much easier to select frequently traveled destinations while on the go, without having to stop and go through a complex set of menus.

Multimedia functions can be added, as can Bluetooth. Both devices also feature traffic receivers, lane guidance and text-to-speech. However, they do differ slightly. The 4350 model features a less impressive resolution than the 4370, which is available for purchase from Best Buy, only. Both models supposedly cost $499.99, but the 4370 is on sale at Best Buy for $399.

Its thin too, thinner than the Maestro 3200. I have to admit, I didn’t know thickness was an issue with GPS units, I mean last I looked TomTom GPS units were one of the top selling units around and they are fat as hell compared to most other navigation units.

Regardless, rumor is, this model was kind of made for release on Black Friday. If that were the case, it would probably do well on that day with an attractive look, a fairly well known brand name and a $230 or less price tag. If you are in a real hurry you can get it now on Amazon for $230, but if I had to guess, it’ll probably get cheaper by Black Friday.

If you have a bad sense of direction, then most likely you get lost not only while driving. And if you’re the outdoorsy type, often lost on a hike or a bike or a kayak, then it’s a good idea to get something like the Magellan CrossoverGPS. It’s claimed to be the first rugged, IPX4-waterproof, pocket-sized portable GPS for both in-car and outdoor navigation.

The Magellan CrossoverGPS comes with full-featured driving GPS guidance with turn-by-turn voice, text, and visual directions, preloaded topographic contour maps of the lower 48 states, a color touchscreen, and multimedia capabilities such as playing MP3s and picture viewing. It can also be upgraded to have live traffic updates and rerouting.

The unit measures just 3.4 x 4.3 x 1.1 inches and has an 8-hour battery life. Priced at $549.
