Nokia N900 video unboxing

Nokia N900 video unboxing

The Nokia N900 was the stand-out device from Nokia World back in September, and we've been tracking the Maemo 5 smartphone ever since.  Imagine our surprise, then, when a pre-release N900 dropped onto the SlashGear test bench today; the hardware is final, so the 5-megapixel autofocus Carl Zeiss camera is onboard, together with HSPA, WiFi b/g, a 3.5-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and you can check out our video unboxing and gallery after the cut.

Nokia port Qt to Maemo 5, promise N900 compatibility [Video]

Nokia have already been pretty upfront about their intentions with the cross-platform Qt framework and Maemo, but the company has just pushed out an official Qt port to Maemo 5 in the form of a "technology preview" release.  Contrary to earlier news that Qt wouldn't play nicely with Maemo 5, the OS which the Nokia N900 will run, but only Maemo 6 (expected in late 2010), the Qt port "is designed specifically to work within the Maemo 5 environment".

Nokia N900 big-screen gaming gets video demo

Apple's iPod touch 3G may be "the funnest iPod ever" now that Steve & Co have decided it's a hardcore gaming machine, but it looks like they may have some competition from Nokia.  One of the N900's less publicized features is its TV output, which can be used to play the preinstalled games - Global Race and Bounce - on a bigger display.  Maemo-Guru shot some footage of the N900 doing its gaming thing, and it certainly looks promising.

Nokia telling carriers “hands off” N900; Maemo staying unbranded

Nokia telling carriers “hands off” N900; Maemo staying unbranded

Nokia has revealed that it will not be customizing its N900 Maemo 5 smartphone to suit carriers, claiming part of Linux's strength in the mobile market is offering customers a "compelling value proposition".  It's a potentially risky strategy; Nokia's struggle to gain the same sort of foothold in North America as it has in Europe has been partly blamed on a refusal to adapt to carrier-demands there.

Intel may still be pushing their vision of MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) but that doesn't mean everyone is singing from the same song-sheet.  SMiT and Optima have both been showing off their attempts at compact handheld web-access devices, the former slapping Android onto a 4.8-inch touchscreen tablet while the latter has picked Maemo for their 4.3-inch MID.  Meanwhile SmartQ's Q5 and Q7 are both seeing development of various mobile platforms.

Talking Nokia N900 and Maemo 5 with Ari Jaaksi

Talking Nokia N900 and Maemo 5 with Ari Jaaksi

We sat down at a roundtable this afternoon with Nokia's Ari Jaaksi, VP of software at the company, and talked about the Nokia N900 and the Maemo 5 OS it runs.  Describing the N900 as "your internet device on the go" and Maemo as "putting the internet first", it's obvious that Jaaksi - and Nokia - have the MID segment in their sights; however they're also upfront about the issues they're going to face not only with their first-gen hardware but the ongoing development of the platform.

Nokia N900 Maemo 5 Shown Off In Very Vibrant Video

Nokia World is coming. Did you get the memo? Or, should we say, Maemo? If you didn't, you probably still already know about it, considering "we've covered" already. And starting tomorrow, the news will start to take on a far more official standpoint. Not that the Nokia N900 isn't official, because it certainly is, but sometimes getting the information from the horse's mouth is a lot better. And who can say no to press events? We certainly can't. But just in case all those still images of the upcoming Rover weren't doing it for you, here's a video of Maemo 5, the User Interface (UI).

Nokia Xseries & Cseries tipped, plus Ilo and Booklet devices

Two upcoming ranges of devices from Nokia have been tipped, after listings for the Cseries and Xseries were discovered in Finland's trademark database.  Although no official delineation of the ranges has been made, current thinking is leaning toward seeing the C-prefix as for mainstream, numbered devices, while the X-prefix might refer to Maemo 5 based devices.  There are also references to the Nokia Booklet and the "Ilo by Nokia".

Optima OP5-E Maemo MID: 4.3″ touchscreen, 3G and GPS

We're used to hearing Maemo mentioned in the same breath as Nokia, but while the open-source OS is generally to be found near Finnish hardware there's no reason why other manufacturers - such as Chinese firm Optima - shouldn't use it on their own devices.  The Optima OP5-E is a 4.3-inch touchscreen MID with WiFi b/g, 3G WWAN and a 3.2-megapixel camera, running Maemo and with voice call functionality.
