New MacBook Pro teardown reveals Core i5, modified chipsets, more

Like any new Apple product, the MacBook Pro has to go through the rite of passage that is an iFixit teardown.  The company have unleashed their usual screwdrivers, spudgers and tickling sticks and whipped open the 15-inch notebook's unibody aluminum case to reveal - in this particular model - the Intel Core i5 processor lurking inside.  While the headline changes are the CPU and GPU, iFixit found a few more modifications that are less obvious. Officially launched yesterday, Apple’s Core i7 15-inch MacBook Pro has arrived on the SlashGear testbench and is crying out for an unboxing.  Sticking to the same unibody aluminum style of its predecessors, the new MacBook Pro throws out the old Core 2 Duo CPUs and replaces them with a choice of Core i5 and Core i7 chips paired with NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics.

Apple MacBook Pro gets Core i5/Core i7 update

The Apple Store is back, and as expected there’s a range of new MacBook Pro notebooks on offer complete with Intel’s Core i5 and i7 processors and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics.  The 15- and 17-inch MBPs get the most significant updates this time around, with the former kicking off at $1,799 with an Intel Core i5 2.4GHz CPU, 320GB hard-drive and GeForce 320M 256MB GPU, while the 17-inch MBP starts at $2,299 with the 2.53GHz Core i5, 500GB hard-drive and GeForce 320M 512MB GPU.

Could a MacBook Pro refresh be in the offing?  We've just checked the Apple Store and it's currently offline for updating, while rumors are circulating that an anonymous source has fingered the reworked flagship notebooks for a launch today.  Elsewhere leaked screenshots from Best Buy's inventory system have seemingly confirmed that the current MacBook Pro SKUs have been deleted and the laptops are no longer available to order. Benchmarking results for unannounced MacBook Pro models apparently running Intel Core i7 processors have reignited rumors that Apple intend to imminently update their flagship notebook range.  The Geekbench results were apparently recorded on February 4th 2010, and clearly indicate that the MacBook Pro (listed as a MacBookPro6,1) has a 2.66GHz Core i7-620M processor paired with 4GB of DDR3 memory.
