New MacBook Air prototype leaks amid SSD Card and screen size speculation

, Oct 16th 2010 Discuss [3]

Apple's "Back to the Mac" event next week is expected to see a new MacBook Air take center stage, but the latest batch of leaks can't seem to decide on what exact form the next-gen ultraportable might take.  Engadget's anonymous tipster sent them a shot of what's said to be the guts of the new machine, with extra battery room, a 13.3-inch display (with unibody MacBook-style hinge) and no space for a regular hard-drive or SSD.  The last part chimes with AppleInsider's sources, who reckon Apple is using an "SSD Card" which packs solid-state storage into something more akin to a stick of RAM.  However, they also claim that it's "certain" that Apple has switched to a smaller display size, just 11.6-inches, and that such machines have been running off production lines for a week already. Apple’s (rumored) 11.6″ MacBook Air creates more buzz

Apple's MacBook Air seems to be disappearing right before retailers' (and consumers') eyes, thanks to on-going rumors of a new 11.6-inch MacBook Air. Both current configurations of the MacBook Air (the low-end 1.83 GHz and the high-end 2.13 GHz) appear to be out-of-stock everywhere. This "disapperance" has not popped up over night. Online retailers have been subtly hinting to buyers that inventory of the MacBook Air is running low, and that the time to buy is now! Read The Full Story

Keyboard-Mac DIY project pairs MacBook Air guts with Magic Trackpad

, Aug 16th 2010 Discuss [3]

Given the trouble ASUS had getting their Eee Keyboard onto the market, we're not really surprised that Apple aren't planning an all-in-one PC and peripheral combo themselves.  Still, Steve Jobs' omission is a gap for a modder, and over at the MacBook Air Project Bart Reardon has taken it on himself to craft a custom keyboard PC based on the guts of a first-gen MacBook Air, an Apple keyboard and a new Magic Trackpad. 11.6″ MacBook Air refresh tipped for September, plus clickwheel-free iPod nano

Apple's now venerable MacBook Air currently languishes as the notebook most in need of an update, and so it comes as little surprise to hear that just such a refresh may be imminent.  According to BMO analyst Keith Bachman, Apple's supply chain is ramping up for what he believes to be a September launch; interestingly, he also expects the new MacBook Air to start off significantly cheaper than the current model's $1,499 base price. MacBook Air refresh delayed by ULV Core i3/i5 shortage?

, Jan 22nd 2010 Discuss [0]

Apple's MacBook Air is beginning to look a little long in the tooth, sticking with Core 2 Duo processors where rival Windows-based ultraportables start to pick up Intel's newer Core i3 and i5 processors.  According to HardMac, however, we may have to wait a little longer for a speedier Air; delays in ultra-low voltage (ULV) versions of the chips have apparently pushed Apple's release plans back.
