If you've ever traveled outside of your own country (or state or city for that matter), you know the importance of the most important tool you can have: the city guide. I personally have gone through a few cities overseas with nothing but a map, a backpack full of scraps of paper, and my wallet, but once I had the chance to grab a city guide booklet (this was back before smartphones), my whole experience changed. Flash forward to today when we've got these tiny screens we can keep in our pockets, and Lonely Planet has a collection of city guides you can grab and keep handy at the flick of the finger! And what's the big news today? Lonely Planet is giving away a batch of big cities away during this holiday season, totally freaking free of charge!

Gameprom, the group of designers that created my all-time very favorite app SLAYER Pinball Rocks has released a couple of videos teasing at the release of a couple of massive mayhem games for the Apple App Store. First there's Crimsonworld, a fabulously fast-moving game where you're a robot in an alien environment where every monster you see wants to destroy you - murder them! Then there's Magnetar, a space scroller along the lines of all your favorite overhead airplane war adventures.

Apple shuttering OS X Download site on Jan 6 as Mac App Store takes over

Apple has informed developers that, as of January 6 2011 and the launch of the new Mac App Store, the Mac OS X Download site will be closed down. According to the statement, shared by 9 to 5 Mac, Apple believes the new software store "will be the best destination for users to discover, purchase, and download your apps" and hopes developers will "take advantage of this new opportunity to showcase your apps to even more users"; however, it's not so easy as porting titles across from one to the other.

EA Games Debuts a Batch of New Games for iOS Including Scrabble and Mortal Kombat

Whoa man, whoa. Take a look at this. EA games launches today a batch of games that are set to set the whole world on fire. First, there's Scrabble - FREE. Then there's Battlefield Bad Company 2, Game of Life, Cause of Death (iPhone), and Cause of Death FREE. Then there's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, the greatest possible game EVER for Sega Genesis and what we hope adds up to be a really freaking amazing game for iOS. In addition to these, EA plans on launching "AN UNPRECEDENTED" worldwide sale of games for Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad - more than 70 popular EA games will be in the Apple App store for $0.99 apiece.

Mac App Store launches January 6 2011

Apple has announced that the Mac App Store will launch on January 6 2011. The new download store for OS X machines is the company's attempt to bring mobile iOS apps to the desktop, and will be available in 90 countries at launch. It will feature paid and free apps in categories like Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities.

As you might have noticed, this year's iTunes Rewind let us know the tops of all categories as far as sales and such go. One that stuck out is MLB At Bat 2010 for iPhone and iPod touch, named highest grossing app by Apple, that's first overall across ALL categories of paid apps in 2010. (And as a bonus, the iPad version was the highest grossing app in the sports category, but who's counting?) Major League Baseball is counting - this game "At Bat" gave users the first full season of live video for EVERY GAME, being accessed 37 million times during the 2010 season.

Cydia Mac App Store alternative due in just a few weeks time

Just as the official Apple App Store for iOS has an unofficial Cydia counterpart, so will the Mac App Store, according to Cydia developer Jay "saurik" Freeman. Speaking at the 360|MacDev conference late last week, Freeman confirmed that a Mac-based version of Cydia should be available within a few weeks. Unlike Apple's official software store for OS X machines, Cydia won't have limits on things like in-app payments.

Apple's Mac App Store will launch without support for either in-app payments or Game Center, according to information the company has confirmed to developers. According to 9 to 5 Mac, the new OS X software store will not enable developers to distribute free or paid apps in which further features or functionality can later be unlocked; meanwhile, Game Center - Apple's online multiplayer social gaming network - will also be absent.
