Apple agrees to $2.2m iPad 4G fine

Apple has agreed to a AU$2.25m ($2.2m) fine in Australia over allegedly misleading new iPad buyers over the tablet's 4G compatibility, though the judge presiding the case could still increase that amount. Both Apple and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission asked Justice Bromberg to approve the fine, the Sydney Morning Herald reports, but the judge is demanding confidential iPad sales information and details of Apple's finances before he agrees. O2 and Vodafone partner on infrastructure for 4G future

UK carriers O2 and Vodafone have announced a new collaboration on 2G, 3G and 4G infrastructure, which will see the companies pool basic network infrastructure in an attempt to speed LTE's arrival. Under the scheme - which is also expected to save both carriers money in the long run - O2 and Vodafone will each continue running independent spectrum and competing services, sharing maintenance duties for the basic hardware and decommissioning unnecessary base-station sites. Qualcomm developing LTE chip that supports 7 spectrum bands

Qualcomm has revealed that it is developing a new LTE chip that can support seven frequency bands, which would mean that future LTE devices equipped with the chip can be used on Verizon, AT&T, and Clearwire 4G. This eliminates the need for manufacturing different versions of a mobile device and solves the interoperability problem of LTE carriers in the US. Read The Full Story

Verizon Galaxy S III pre-orders open for early July delivery

Verizon has thrown open the pre-order doors for the Samsung Galaxy S III, though buyers of the new third-gen flagship shouldn't expect to see their new toy until early next month. According to SlashGear readers who've stumped up the $249.99 Verizon is asking - plus two-year agreement, naturally - the estimated ship-by date is July 9 2012. Read The Full Story

US Cellular Galaxy S III pre-orders begin June 12th

Verizon definitely seems to have caused a stir, with carriers left right and center all announcing their pre-order and sales intentions for the Galaxy S III this morning. Now US Cellular has stepped up to the plate to offer up its own information. Verizon Galaxy S III pre-orders start June 6th

We heard last night that all four major US carriers would be seeing the Galaxy S III this month, and Verizon is the first out of the gate with pre-order details. Customers will be able to pre-order either a 16GB or 32GB Galaxy S III starting from June 6th at 7am EST. The 16GB model will cost $199.99, while the 32GB model will set you back $249.99.

Verizon likely to divest spectrum for cable deal

Verizon's proposed $3.6 billion deal to snatch up unused AWS spectrum from a coalition of cable companies in exchange for joint marketing will likely require the carrier to divest some of that spectrum. Senator Herb Kohl, chairman of the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee, who urged against the AT&T and T-Mobile deal that later crumbled, has issued a letter this week raising competition concerns surrounding the Verizon deal. China Mobile hoping to offer iPhone

Apple continues to roll out the iPhone to additional carriers across the United States, and more importantly, the world. Bloomberg reports that China Mobile is in talks with Apple to carry the iPhone, which would bring Cupertino’s smartphone to the largest phone company in the world in terms of user base. NVIDIA and partner acquire 500 wireless patents

NVIDIA has partnered with Intellectual Ventures in order to acquire roughly 500 patents owned by IPWireless. All the patents revolve around wireless technologies, including 3G, LTE, and LTE-Advanced. The acquisition closed on April 30th, but the terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. IPWireless will retain access to the patents royalty-free, with the portfolio split between NVIDIA and Intellectual Ventures. Read The Full Story
