Logitech Revue Google TV box passes the FCC

Logitech's Revue Google TV box has cleared the FCC, with a new filing from the company's OEM partner Gigabyte.  Wireless Goodness spotted the new listing, which also includes some internal shots [pdf link] of the Revue's hardware; unsurprisingly, it all looks much like a regular nettop inside, with an Intel CE4150 1.2GHz processor doing all the major crunching. Wireless charging to see 65x growth by 2014 claims iSuppli; Nokia & RIM tipped as cutting their cords

Wireless charging solutions like the Palm Touchstone are likely to increase in shipments by a factor of 65x by 2014, iSuppli are predicting, suggesting that cordless power will spread from mobile phones to "portable media players, digital still cameras and mobile PCs."  They also predict the rise of a common standard which all manufacturers could promote cooperatively.  Current wireless charging shipments are believed to be around 3.6m units in 2010, though iSuppli expect that to rise to 234.9m in just four years time. Google TV: Good Idea, Poor Initial Execution

At last week’s Google I/O conference, the search giant revealed plans for new web video technologies, an update to Android, and Google TV. Before we get into what Google TV is, it’s worth noting something that it isn’t – a tablet. (You’re probably thinking, “I don’t need a fancy analyst guy to tell me that Google TV isn’t a tablet, it’s sort of self-evident.” Bear with me.) Apple’s unbelievable early success with the iPad is due in large part to the fact that the iPad isn’t an entirely new product – it’s a sibling to the iPod touch. However, in addition to extending the iPhone/iPod/iTunes ecosystem to include the iPad, Apple rewrote its apps for the larger form factor and encouraged developers to specifically target the iPad with a segmented app store. Google is now targeting all three screens, the PC, TV, and phone, but missed the opportunity at its annual developer event to promote its vision for things that fit in between the phone and PC. There will be dozens of Android tablets out this year, and none of them will have an optimized experience. I think this is a major missed opportunity.

Google have, as expected, announced Google TV.  Claiming that people watch on average 5hrs of TV per day, and that there are 4bn TV users worldwide, Google have added search functionality to the TV experience.  Google TV is based on Android with the Chrome browser and full Flash support, and there’ll be Logitech set-top boxes that daisy-chains in-between your HDTV and your existing cable or satellite box, or standalone Sony HDTVs or Blu-ray players with Google TV integrated.
