YouTube began experimenting with live streaming a few years ago, offering it to show a few big events as they happened. In 2010, the feature was expanded a tad to a few networks, with plans to expand it again in the future. It has been a slow process, but the offering is being expanded again, this time to a wider range of users who have “eligible accounts.” Along with the expansion is a tool to give users a thumbs up or down about whether they qualify.

In addition to being in good standing, the YouTube channel must have a minimum of one thousand subscribers. The sticking point, however, is that neither of the two alone seem to guarantee that you’ll be granted access to the feature, instead making you eligible to apply for it. Says YouTube, after enabling the Live button, users will gain access to the feature “in the following weeks,” all of which is a rather obtuse explanation of the expansion.

You can find out rather quickly if you meet the requirements by heading into the Account Features page and scrolling to the bottom of the listing. At the end of the list is the “Live” feature with a radio button. If you see a clickable button that says “Enable,” you’ll eligible to apply. If you’re not for whatever reason, such as bad standing or too few subscribers, you’ll see the following instead:

There are three categories in which an account is monitored for good or sub-par standing: Community Guidelines, Copyright Strikes, and Content ID Claims. All three are likewise listed on the Account Features page, each with a radio button and rating next to it. All three radio buttons must display a green light and the phrase “Good Standing.”

YouTube specifies the standards for gaining – and remaining – in good standing in its Community Guidelines. If you are granted the live streaming feature, you’ll be able to use any live video stream, with the ability to implement various camera angles, advertisements, slates, and close captioning. The live streams are supported across multiple devices, and can be watched from a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

If you’re in the mood for a lunar eclipse, NASA says that there will be one later today, but it probably won’t be anything too spectacular according to their description. The partial lunar eclipse will be taking place during the day in the US, but there will be a live stream from Dubai that will start at 3 pm ET.

This will mark the first lunar eclipse of 2013, but it won’t be a full one. According to NASA, less than 1.5% of the moon will be darkened by Earth’s shadow, and it will only last 27 minutes, which will make it one of the shortest lunar eclipses that we’ve seen in the past 100 years or so.

The partial lunar eclipse will start at 10 pm GST, and the folks at Slooh Space Camera will be live streaming a video feed from a telescope in Dubai, where the partial lunar eclipse should be completely visible as long as the weather cooperates. Commentary will also be provided by Dr. Lucie Green, who is a researcher at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory in England, so it should be quite the learning experience.

If you miss today’s lunar eclipse, don’t worry, as there will be two more throughout 2013, with the next one occurring on May 25. That one should be visible by folks in the US, although it won’t be a completely full lunar eclipse, however. The third lunar eclipse will take place on October 18.

This isn’t the first time that NASA has live-streamed a spacewalk, but we certainly don’t get treated to them very often. Today, NASA is live streaming a six-hour spacewalk aboard the International Space Station, as two Russian cosmonauts venture their way out into deep, dark space to fix a broken reflector and install weather monitoring equipment on the exterior of the station.

The spacewalk will last a total of six hours, and it’s going on right now, and you can view what the cosmonauts are seeing thanks to their helmet cameras, and you can also hear the audio transmission between the two cosmonauts and the mission control on the ground, which is pretty neat. Pavel Vinogradov and Roman Romanenko are the two cosmonauts making the spacewalk.

The spacewalkers will be tasked with installing what’s called the Obstanovka experiment on the exterior of the station’s Zvezda service module. The equipment will study plasma waves and the effect of space weather on Earth’s ionosphere. They will also retrieve the Biorisk experiment, which studied the effect of microbes on spacecraft structures.

The cosmonauts will also replace a faulty retro-reflector device, which is just one of the navigational aids that provides assistance to the European Space Agency’s Albert Einstein Automated Transfer Vehicle 4 cargo ship, where it will automatically dock to the space station later in June.

It seems like Google has been spending a lot of time on its YouTube app for iOS. Of course, this isn’t too surprising, as the search giant was more or less forced to release their own when Apple dropped it from iOS 6. This time around, the app comes with the ability to access live streams right from the iOS app, letting you tune into live events while on the go.

The updated app actually includes several new features, with live streaming being the headliner, while the others are merely minor changes. Aside from the live streaming, there’s a new My Subscriptions feed, which gives you quick access to new uploads, as well as support for video queuing for TV playback.

The most-interesting feature by far though is the live streaming abilities, which comes at a bad time actually, considering that YouTube just live streamed the Coachella Music Festival all weekend long, and we’re sure that some YouTube users wished they could have joined in on their mobile devices while away from the house.

Either way, live streaming is now…well…live, so head on over the iTunes App Store to download the app, or simply just head to Updates to get the latest version. We have to say that Apple dropping YouTube from iOS as a default app has turned out to be quite a blessing, as Google now has the opportunity to add a slew of cool features on their own time.

If you’ve been on the internet at any point during the past several months, or have even listened to the radio, then you undoubtedly know about the popular K-Pop hit “Gangnam Style” by Psy. The music video currently has over 1.5 billion views on YouTube, which is more than any other YouTube video ever. However, Psy is moving onto another new song that he will be debuting live on YouTube this Saturday.

It’s not too often that a new single will have gained so much popularity that it warrants a live debut on YouTube, but if anyone is capable of doing it, Psy is certainly the singer who can. This Saturday at 2:30 am PT (yes, that’s the middle of the night), Psy will live stream his new single, titled “Gentleman,” to the world for the first time.

Psy will be debuting the song at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, where not only will be performing live on YouTube, but in front of thousands of people as well. It should be a good time, but for those of us in the US, be prepared to either stay up late or wake up really early to catch it live. Or you could just wait until morning and watch a replay of it like most of us will probably do anyway.

Psy’s “Gangnam Style” hit the 1-billion-view mark back in December, and it’s already gained another 500 million views within the last few months alone. The video alone also brought in $8 million in advertising, thanks to YouTube’s advertising platform that allows users to make money off of their videos by embedding ads.

It seems that networks are finally coming around to the idea of bringing their live content to mobile devices. It’s said that US television network ABC is currently working on a mobile app that will be able to live stream broadcasts over WiFi or a data connection as long as users have a cable or satellite subscription.

According to the New York Times, “the app will live stream ABC programming to the phones and tablets of cable and satellite subscribers.” If such an app did come out, it would be the first time that a US television network has offered live-streaming options on mobile devices. The app would work similarly to the WatchESPN app, or the Olympics app that launched over the summer last year.

ABC is known for popular shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Good Morning America, Dancing with the Stars, and more. The live-streaming app would essentially allow users to watch these shows live anywhere they want, whether it’s over a WiFi connection or a 3G or 4G LTE connection, which would no doubt cheer up those grumpy travelers waiting at the airport.

This news comes a few days after CBS launched its own streaming app, but the big difference here is that CBS’s offering only streams shows after they’ve aired, which ranges from 24 hours to an entire week before you can watch new episodes on your mobile device. The ABC app would takes things a step further and would allow users to watch new episodes live.

Today you’re in for a treat if you’re interested in seeing massive hunks of space debris fly past our planet thanks to NASA. The NASA team has put together a live video stream for your enjoyment, showing the Earth flyby in real time today at 2:25 p.m. EST. For those of you wondering – no, there is no chance that this asteroid will be colliding with our planet, so you can rest easy.

The NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office has let it be known that they’ve successfully been able to predict the path of the 2012 DA14 thus far, and have no reason to believe it’ll be changing to a collision course with the planet at any time. On the other hand, this asteroid will be passing so close to the Earth that it will be inside our planet’s massive ring of geosynchronous weather and communications satellites – so if you’ve got any rogue spaceships up there you’ve been meaning to move, you should probably have already done so.

At this point in time – 11:21 AM PST you’ll see the image above showing how NASA puts the 2012 DA14 asteroid at a point closer to the Earth than we are to any of our other planetary cousins. Have a peek at the live stream here as well:

Let us know what you think of this big event and how awesome you feel it is that we’re able to watch the whole thing on the web! This sort of asteroid movement has previously been broadcast on every sort of set all the way back to black and white television, with NASA behind the helm all the way. Have a peek at the timeline below for more information on recent asteroid or meteor happenings as they occurred in our solar system over the past few weeks and months as well!

UPDATE: you can follow the asteroid in a fabulous computer simulation in NASA’s “Eyes on the Solar System” web app as well. It’s a must-see sort of situation – you can ride along with the rock!

It isn’t exactly a secret anymore that Microsoft is holding a big Windows 8 launch event in New York tomorrow, and indeed, we’ll be there covering the whole thing. If you want to follow along as we report the news, you’re in luck (at least partially), as Microsoft will be live streaming its keynote from the event. The keynote is scheduled to kick of at 11:15 AM Eastern tomorrow, so be sure to write that down if you want to watch it live.

However, Microsoft won’t be streaming the whole event – just the keynote, which means that the stream will be live for just about an hour tomorrow morning on Microsoft’s website. That’s where we come in – we’ll be at the event all day long checking out Windows 8, Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet, and hardware from Microsoft’s partners, so after the cameras shut down, be sure to keep it at SlashGear for more information for the show.

Microsoft has some pretty big weeks ahead of it. This launch event comes one day before Windows 8 will become available to the general public on October 26. It’s that day that Microsoft will be launching Surface RT across the country as well, and the company is even opening a number of temporary stores in cities around the US to sell the tablet and its new operating system.

Then, we have Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 launch event next week on October 29, which comes the day before Microsoft BUILD 2012 kicks off. It’s a great time to be a Microsoft fan, and we’re excited to see all that Microsoft has to offer in the coming days and weeks. To find out more about Microsoft’s incoming products before the event kicks off tomorrow, be sure to have a look at our Windows 8 and Surface RT reviews!

For those of you not already watching the live video feed of the Felix Baumgartner jump from space down to the planet in a Red Bull stunt for the record books, now’s a good time to start – he’s jumped! This jump had been cancelled earlier in the week due to weather conditions then postponed for the same reason, here working with conditions that allow the jump to go on optimally (so far) straight down from 120,000 feet / 36,576 meters above the ground. If all goes as planned, this mission will break more than one world record, and will be more than just a little bit of a good PR bit for the Red Bull brand.

This mission will (or already has, depending on when you’re reading this) break the record for the first human to break the sound barrier in freefall. That’s a fabulous 690 miles / 1,110 kilometers per hour straight down without any propulsion other than gravity, incase you did not know. It’s already a record-breaker right as Baumgartner exited the craft he was lifted up in as this becomes the highest skydive in recorded history. Not that anyone wouldn’t have recorded such a jump, of course.

You can watch the live feed of this event above, or you can watch the computer generated rendering of the event below. Red Bull made certain to show the event in more than way so that people across the earth could understand the epic nature of it all. Now that the jump has been initiated, Red Bull has only to cross their fingers and hope that it all goes well – Red Bull will be a drink that people will be downing for generations at this!

This mission is just one of several such jumps that’ve been made by Baumgartner in the past in collaboration with Red Bull. This man also did a skydive across the English Channel and dia a BASE jump from the hand of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro – if that doesn’t make you feel like the drink gives you wings, nothing else will. Of course if you weren’t convinced then, today’s record breaker – breaking a record 50 years old, mind you – really should.

Just a friendly reminder for all of you politically motivated folks out there, the first of three presidential debates will be going down tonight. Those with a subscription to Xbox Live Gold will be able to stream the debate on their Xbox 360, with Microsoft giving users the ability to participate in polls as Mitt Romney and Barack Obama verbally duke it out on stage. The debate kicks off at 9PM Eastern Time, and Major Nelson says that those who watch three of the four scheduled debates (one of those is the vice presidential debate, keep in mind) will get a free Halo 4 suit of armor for their avatar.

Of course, Xbox Live Gold is a little on the expensive side these days, so if you need a different place to watch the debate, YouTube has you covered. YouTube will be streaming the debate through its Election Hub, complete with commentary and additional footage from its partners like The Wall Street Journal, Al Jazeera, The New York Times, and ABC News. If you live and breathe politics, the YouTube Election Hub is probably your best bet for all-encompassing debate coverage.

Naturally, there are plenty of other places to catch the debate, including Politico, which will be tossing pre-debate coverage into the mix starting at 5PM Pacific Time. C-SPAN will be streaming the debate over at its own Election Hub, and Univision will even be translating the debate into Spanish as it happens. In short, if you want to watch the debate tonight, you have plenty of options to choose from – all you need to do is pick one.

Tonight’s debate will have Romney and President Obama debating over domestic policy. It’s bound to be an exciting debate for some and a bore for others, but it’s one of the best chances we’ll have to see Romney and President Obama go head-to-head on the issues. Where are you watching the debate tonight?

Starting later on this month (Monday, August 27 to be exact), the Xbox 360 dashboard will transform into a hub for coverage of the 2012 presidential election. Microsoft announced today that it will be providing Xbox 360 owners with full election coverage, and from the sounds of things, those who are interested will be able to find all the information they could ever want about the election come August 27.

Microsoft isn’t offering this election hub by itself, however, as it has a teamed up with a number of different companies to deliver all-encompassing coverage. Users will be able to register to vote through the dashboard thanks to the Rock the Vote campaign, while Face the Facts USA will be offering information on both candidates. There will also be “live daily polling” provided by the folks at YouGov, so Xbox 360 users will be able to keep up with the rest of the community’s thoughts on the election.

Microsoft has also teamed up with NBC News to deliver daily video content on the election. Perhaps most importantly, Xbox users will be able to watch the three planned presidential debates along with live streams from the Republican and Democratic National Conventions through their consoles. That’s where YouGov’s live polling comes in, as Xbox 360 owners will be able to vote in polls during the debates.

As always, there’s a bit of a catch: most of this coverage will be available to all Xbox Live users, but the really important stuff – the debates and the coverage from NBC – will only be available to those with an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Other than the Gold requirement (which was to be expected, really), this sounds like a pretty great way to get gamers involved in the election, and the information from Face the Facts USA will undoubtedly be appreciated while the candidates are offering their own take on things during the debates. Will you be watching the debates through your Xbox 360?

The annual Lollapalooza Music Festival is getting underway in Chicago today, but if you can’t make it, you’re not being left out entirely. Just like last year, YouTube will be streaming the entire event, and all you need to do to check it out is head over to YouTube’s Lollapalooza channel. YouTube’s coverage of the festival has already started, and will run through Sunday, August 5. Convenient, no?

Of course, watching streaming video over the Internet isn’t as good as actually being there, but at least this way you get to see the acts without being out in the heat all day. YouTube has two different Lollapalooza channels you can switch between at will, with a handy little guide on the side of the page to tell you what’s happening on both channels. There’s also a comment stream you can watch, with comments coming in constantly from people using Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and YouTube.

This year’s Lollapalooza is one that you don’t want to miss, with acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, and The Black Keys headlining the event. Never you fear, hipsters of the world, as there will also be plenty of up-and-coming acts performing at the festival. Check out YouTube’s promotional video for the live stream below to get a better idea of which bands will be playing, or go to YouTube’s Lollapalooza channel to see a full line-up.

We have to say, this is one of those events that makes us love the Internet. Instead of being crammed between a bunch of hot and sweaty people, we get to watch the entire festival from our comfy chairs, free from any contact with natural light whatsoever. Music enthusiasts are encouraged to click the link above, because this Lollapalooza sounds like it will be quite the doozy.

It’s time to check out all the streaming live video streams we can for the kickoff of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. This is the third time that London has hosted the Olympics, with their first being all the way back in 1908 and the next just a few years after the end of World War II in 1948. Here in 2012, it’s time for a party – and without a doubt the entirety of England will be in rare form throughout the events which start off tonight with an above-average strange set of characters that’ll only be come apparent once the ceremony has begun – Voldemordt and Mary Poppins have been tipped.

What you’ll be looking for online on your desktop computer for live video is a collection of feeds from NBC. While there are other streams out there, the Olympics committee appears to be working directly with NBC for this event for all streaming content via YouTube. Of course the BBC will also be streaming all of the events, including the opening ceremonies, all via Facebook. Have a peek at BBCSport on Facebook to see what your options are right this minute!

Have a peek at the following presentation video to get connected:

For those of you looking to connect via Android, you’ll want to check out the NBC Olympics app which will be working asap starting tonight. This same app is available for iOS and made for both the iPhone and the iPad.

With the memory of Dish Network dropping AMC at the end of June undoubtedly still fresh in their minds, Breaking Bad fans are probably getting a little anxious. The season premiere of the fifth and final season of the critically-acclaimed show is quickly approaching, and up until just a little while ago, it looked like Dish Network subscribers were going to be left out in the cold. Thankfully, that’s no longer the case, as AMC has decided to help fans of the show out by streaming the premiere over the internet.

The stream is only available to Dish Network subscribers, and unfortunately, only the first episode of the season will be streamed. After that, you’re on your own, so you’ll have to switch to another television provider or wait until AMC makes the season available in other forms if you want to catch the rest of the episodes. Still, this a nice gesture for those who just want to watch some quality programming but were instead caught up in AMC and Dish’s tussle.

Both companies say different things about why AMC was dropped from Dish Network – according to Dish, it’s because AMC and two other channels owned by the same company, IFC and WE tv, have been performing poorly as far as ratings are concerned. Dish also doesn’t like the fact that AMC makes older episodes of its show available for free online. Hearing AMC explain the parting of ways, however, we get a much different story. AMC says that Dish dropped them because of bad blood from an unrelated lawsuit. Which one is right? No one is really sure. The only thing that seems certain is that these two aren’t likely to kiss and make-up anytime soon.

If you’re a Dish Network subscriber interested in catching the live stream of the Breaking Bad premiere, you can sign up here starting tomorrow, July 13. The show is set to premiere at 10:00 PM EDT on Sunday, July 15, so be sure to register to watch it before then!

This year at one of the largest and most jangly of music festivals you’ll see a few cameras here and there run by no less than Google as the entirety of the event will be shown live via YouTube! This event takes place from June 8th until the 10th and the entire schedule can be seen right here in the post you’re now in. This event has for several years featured acts such as Phish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Ben Folds Five, this year starting off the festivities with none other than Ben displaying a BlackBerry device showing him teasing the event last year – for this year.

Ben Folds is notorious for projecting his concerts and exploits across the web in the past, once even using a random video chat application to show an entire concert for free to whichever lucky citizen of the web who realized what they were watching. This time we’re getting the entirety of his part of the festival as well as the entire rest of the festival from start to finish. All you’ve got to do is head on over to the Bonnaroo YouTube Channel and get your swerve on.

You’ll be rolling out with so many jam bands you won’t know what end you entered on and what end is the tail end. This is a festival that generally plays host to music lovers galore, but certainly isn’t the sort of place you’d take a kid. Thusly let them all listen from home, free from all the strange oddities that propagate the concert environment!

You’ll want to check out Radiohead, Flogging Molly, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Shins, Bon Iver, Kenny Rogers, The Avett Brothers, Das Racist, and the best of them all, Trampled By Turtles! For real, folks, go watch em all from the comfort of your own glowstick and black paint covered basement and dance until the sun comes back!

Hauppauge Digital’s Broadway live TV streamer for the iPad and iPhone can now record TV programs. The Broadway stand-alone box allows live TV to be watched on Apple devices in the home via a WiFi connection or anywhere in the world through an Internet connection.

With the Broadway, you can easily stream a football game or news program over your home WiFi network to your iPad. You can still connect to it even when you’re traveling, letting you watch live TV from anywhere in the world. The Broadway connects to your home network and transmits the TV signal over the Internet to your iPad or iPhone.

The Broadway uses a high-quality HD H.264 video compressor that can take programs from QAM digital cable TV or ATSC over-the-air TV and compress so that they can be displayed on Apple devices. It has a built-in multi-format TV receiver and can also convert analog video.

The new feature will allow Broadway users to also record the live-streamed TV programs. All that is needed is a TV source, either cable TV or TV antenna, and a home network connection. The Broadway is available now for $199.

Livestream, the current leader in live streaming services, is shaking things up by introducing an industry-first affordable portable HD video encoder and uploader called the Broadcaster. This device will work with the company’s New Livestream service to bring an unlimited ad-free HD broadcasting solution to the masses. With the Broadcaster, live video coverage of events would only require a camera and an internet connection.

The Livestream Broadcaster is a tiny red box that can either be attached to video equipment for covering live events or used as a desktop encoder. Either way, the Broadcaster eliminates the need for a computer. It automatically encodes live recordings on the fly into H.264 video and AAC audio at up to 2.3Mbps and then streams it via Ethernet, WiFi, or a 3G/4G USB modem to the LiveStream platform.

Cameras connect to the Livestream Broadcaster using HDMI video input, while microphones can be connected directly to its 3.5mm audio jack. In contrast to existing equipment that cost in the thousands, the Livestream Broadcaster only costs $495, really lowering the barrier of entry into live broadcasting. The device comes with 3 free months of Livestream service, which costs $45 per month.

More than 3,000 hours of live streaming footage from the Olympics will be broadcast online, making it the most live content, by far, ever to be broadcast from the global competition. In case you were wondering, yes, that equates to every single event during the entire Olympic period will be available to Web surfers in the US. This is the first time that has happened.

According to NBC’s preliminary Olympics website, viewers will also be able to replay content online. In other words, there will be more online video than ever before, and it’s sure to drive page views to NBC.com like the site has never seen. Apparently the streaming technology will be powered by YouTube, but the streams will only be available on the NBC site.

During the 2010 Olympics, viewers for the first time ever were able to watch coverage of the games from their mobile phones. However, the actual depth of content that was available online was limited. NBC wanted people to tune into its own TV network and its sister networks. The mobile and online aspects were more for text-based updates and keeping track of medal counts, and so forth. Now, though, monetizing streaming video is a much more viable option, and NBC will no doubt make a killing there.

Last year was pretty cool for basketball fans. Even if you weren’t home, you could still tune into all the great March Madness action on CBSSports.com from your laptop or mobile device. This year, though, that same access will cost you $3.99. It’s not a huge sum of money, but it is a big difference from being free. However, live streaming from a computer will still be available free of charge. This all applies to games that are broadcast on CBS.

There are other matches that will be shown on a variety of Turner properties, including TBS.com, TNT.tv, and Trutv.com. For those games, customers can still stream for free but only if they have an existing pay TV subscription with a participating provider. Most major cable and satellite networks are included, with the main exception being Time Warner Cable (which, ironically, is owned by the same parent company as TBS.com, TNT.tv, and Trutv.com; corporate bureaucracy at its finest).

The $3.99 fee applies to users who want to view the games on an iOS or Android device, whether it’s a smartphone or a tablet. The website will be able to identify if users are trying to access the live content from one of these platforms, and at that point will prompt them for payment verification. Going to the exact same website on a Windows or Mac computer will lead viewers to the stream for free. It’s a small price to pay for a basketball fan, but it is still a price.

At Super Bowl XLVI, Tom Brady will pretty much have the best seat in the house. But last year was a bit different – he was in Costa Rica and couldn’t exactly tune in to watch the game on TV. So he did what any good football fan would have done. He watched it on an illegal Super Bowl website. For shame, Tom. For shame. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a Giants fan.

During one of the many media events leading up to Sunday’s big game, Brady was asked about where he was last year at this time and was quoted as saying, “I was rehabbing my foot in Costa Rica watching the game on an illegal Super Bowl website and now I’m actually playing in the game, so it’s pretty cool.” We have to wonder how many of his fellow Costa Rican posse will be watching him from the same illegitimate site this year.

Although, for the first time, if you don’t have access to a TV and you want to tune into the live action, you will have a legal way to do so. The game will be streamed on the official websites of NBC and the NFL. In addition, Verizon has nabbed exclusive rights to the live mobile stream. With these new viewing avenues, the number of people who tune into the Super Bowl may very well be larger than ever. But will those PC and smartphone streamers still watch the commercials?

The Huffington Post, which has blossomed into one of the biggest online news networks in the world, is planning to enter a space it hasn’t really delved into before – live streaming video. The site will essentially become a competitor not only to online news outlets but to the 24/7 cable news networks as well. At least, that is the goal. The site plans to offer 12 hours of original programming every day.

This bold and ambitious new plan is planned to come to fruition some time this summer. Then, by the end of 2013, the number of hours of content will grow to 16 hours per day, literally pitting it against CNN, Fox News, and the other 24-hour news channels which only offer about 15-17 hours of news and then several hours of re-aired programming during the overnight hours. This announcement came from a blog post written by Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, who actually has very little to do with the site’s day-to-day operations anymore.

People won’t just be watching it from their computers, either. It will “live on every platform — computer, smartphone, tablet, Over-the-Top TV — with the goal of creating the most social video experience anywhere,” Huffington wrote. It’s a good thing she wrote it because we probably wouldn’t have been able to understand anything with her thick Greek accept. The Huffington Post now belongs to AOL, which purchased the domain last year for $315 million.

Comcast is working on a new service called AnyPlay that will add the ability to stream live TV to its Xfinity TV app for iPads. The service will compete with Time Warner’s similar offering, but will only work with the Motorola IPTV box and the tablet being streamed to must be connected to a home network.

Although no official announcements for the service have been made yet, MacRumors was able to glean some details off of the above screenshot they obtained. The service only allows Comcast subscribers to stream live TV to their iPads while connected to their home network, meaning WiFi from other locations or via 3G will not work.

This restriction most likely has to do with the distribution agreements between Comcast and content providers. Both Time Warner and Cablevision have already gotten into hot water with providers such as Viacom, which sued both cable companies for breach of contract regarding their TV streaming apps.

Users should be able to watch most channels that are available with their Xfinity TV service and can register up to 10 tablets. However, the service can only stream live TV to one tablet at a time and it’s not clear when the service will be ready.

The Cablevision iOS app that lets you stream TV shows to your iPad has finally cleared the Viacom hurdle. The Optimum iOS app for the iPad was first introduced back in April, offering up to 300 TV channels. And much like the reaction to the Time Warner Cable iPad app, Viacom sued Cablevision claiming that the company did not have the right to put its shows on anything except cable TV.

Cablevision has always argued against the claim insisting that unlike other cable companies, its network was IP-based and therefore streaming to iPads, iPhones, and iPods was simply like streaming to other TV screens. It believed that it was operating within its existing contract with Viacom and other TV networks. In contrast, Viacom considered it distribution via the internet, which breaches their agreement as well as copyright law.

In the settlement today, it appears that the resolution of an “unrelated business matter” may have helped push things through. According to a joint statement, the two companies have reached an agreement to mutual satisfaction although neither side has conceded its original legal position. They also did not disclose any details on the settlement.

We have talked about the consumer product that Monsoon offers in the past. The line of Vulkano placeshifting and streaming video gear is large and has some decent offerings. The last Vulkano product we talked about was the Blast early this year. Monsoon has announced that it will be offering the software behind its placeshifting technology to OEMs.

The Monsoon TV Anywhere placeshifting software is Linux-based and the software will allow cable operators and set-top box markers to integrate the ability to placeshift content to devices like computers, tablets, and smartphones. The software also allows the OEMs and providers to mange what programs the user can placeshift

Monsoon has five integrated modules that will allow the semiconductor encoder firms out there to integrate placeshifting in products. The modules include Adaptive Bit-Rate Encoding and Transcoding, Http Live Streaming (HLS) for Live Video Sources, Proprietary Streaming Protocol, Connection Management and Multi-Screen Client Technologies. Monsoon does point out that it will continue to make the line of Vulkano gear.

Remember the whole controversy over live streaming cable TV to your iPad? The problem that got networks angry, threatening Time Warner Cable with lawsuits? Well, it looks like Motorola may have figured out a way to bypass network licensing issues to avoid those same problems with a new live streaming device called Motorola Televation.

It’s not to say TV networks won’t be angry. But, according to Motorola, it’s Televation product is legally in the clear because it connects to the same linear video feeds as do set-top boxes rather than feeds streamed over a broadband network.

Motorola Televation streams live TV to IP-enabled devices such as your iPad, Android tablet, a connected TV, or any other IP-enabled gadget around your house. The device connects directly to your coax outlet and your WiFi router. It uses a 1GHz digital tuner and CableCard to access broadcast TV channels and can transcode video streams in real-time from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4. It can also change resolution and bit rate to match the destination screen.

However, Motorola is not offering the device directly to consumers. The Televation will be available to service providers that can create their own branded iPad and Android apps for the device to then resell to consumers.

Press Release:

The new Motorola Televation™ product securely streams subscription TV to IP devices connected to the home Wi-Fi network

CHICAGO, June 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Motorola Mobility Inc. (NYSE: MMI) today announced the availability of Motorola Televation™, a broadband device that works with a Wi-Fi router to allow consumers to watch live TV on a connected IP device anywhere around the home, whether they are preparing food in the kitchen or relaxing in the backyard.

According to Motorola’s 2010 Media Engagement Barometer research, Americans watch an average of 21 hours of video content a week and about 86 percent pay for TV service. Furthermore, in May 2011, Motorola conducted focus groups with consumers in the New York and Los Angeles metro markets. In many cases, consumers liked the idea of watching live TV somewhere other than a traditional family room and felt it would allow them to spend more time with loved ones if they had the ability to watch different programs in the same room.

“Consumers love entertainment, and want easy access to TV no matter where they are in the home. Coupled with the explosive popularity of tablet devices, this represents a terrific opportunity for MSOs to increase customer satisfaction while generating new revenue,” said John Burke, senior vice president and general manager, Converged Experiences, Motorola Mobility. “Televation gives our customers the ability to launch a new service that puts innovation back into TV, enabling their subscribers to enjoy TV beyond the TV.”

Televation employs a 1GHz digital tuner and CableCard to access broadcast TV channels directly from a coax outlet. The device has a high-performance transcoder that translates programming in real-time from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4, as well as changing resolution and bit rate to match the capabilities of the consumer’s viewing device while maintaining excellent picture quality. The device has an Ethernet jack to plug directly into the home Wi-Fi router so the TV show can be wirelessly streamed over IP to any device connected to the home network. To keep the programming secure while it is being streamed, and to preserve the digital rights associated with the program, Televation utilizes Motorola’s SecureMedia IPRM-HN technology. IPRM-HN has been approved by both CableLabs and the DTLA (Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator), giving content owners peace of mind that their valuable asset remains safe.

Motorola provides Software Development Kits (SDKs) for both Android and iOS development environments, so customers can easily develop client applications that enable the subscriber to navigate, discover and select the show they want to watch. Motorola also provides a reference client application for tablet devices that can be easily branded, giving customers an alternative to developing their own application. Motorola worked closely with engineers at Comcast Innovation Labs to develop Televation.

“Motorola shares our focus on developing innovative consumer entertainment experiences, and we’re pleased to have been able to work with them on Televation,” said Tony Werner, executive vice president and chief technology officer for Comcast. “As the digital home continues to evolve, Televation is one of many tools that MSOs can use to give consumers a more portable TV experience in the home so they can watch anytime and anywhere.”

As the developer of the Motorola XOOM™, the award winning tablet powered by Android, and Televation, Motorola is uniquely positioned to provide converged experiences that empower people to enjoy their favorite content where and when they want. Televation will be showcased at the 2011 Cable Show in Motorola’s booth #609 and in the Comcast booth #1201, June 14-16, in Chicago, IL.

You may soon be able to stream live shows on YouTube if not be live-streaming your own channel on Youtube. The online video giant launched today its YouTube Live portal that will integrate live streaming capabilities and discovery tools directly into YouTube’s core platform. The system should eventually roll out to the masses, but will start off with select channel partners to ensure smooth content streaming until all the kinks are worked out.

“The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead,” said YouTube. “In order to ensure a great live stream viewing experience, we’ll roll this offering out incrementally over time.”

The service has been tested before for streaming popular one-time events such as concerts, sporting events, and interviews. Early last September, the service trial proved buggy and faced a limited viewership. But in January, a new and improved version came back and now it’s full steam ahead to build the system out to include streaming from thousands of content partners.

The new YouTube Live will not only have a landing page specifically for live streamed content browsing, it will also allow users to subscribe and mark events on the calendar for watching later. In this case, subscriptions not only alert subscribers of posted videos but also of upcoming streams.

There are already other services out there devoted to live streaming content such as Ustream, Justin.tv, and Qik, but with the juggernaut that is YouTube jumping into the ring, it will be interesting to see how this impacts the competition. For now you can go check out the YouTube Live portal.

Time Warner Cable and Viacom are duking it out over the popular live TV streaming app that the cable company dished out late last month. The two companies each filed lawsuits today with Time Warner Cable asking the court to confirm the right to in-home viewing of channels on any screen while Viacom shot back with a suit for breach of contract and copyright violations.

The Time Warner Cable iPad app has been super popular since launch and simply allows its cable customers to view their already paid for cable channels on their iPads in a way where the iPad acts as a handheld TV. For instance, a customer can enjoy watching TV shows in their bed or keep their eye on a sports game while heading to the kitchen. Customers can only stream the channels while on their home WiFi network. Despite this modest approach, networks are upset and have been sending cease-and-desists to Time Warner Cable.

The networks consider this to be a new means of content delivery that requires re-negotiation of terms—meaning they want more money. Viacom seems to be the most aggressive of all the networks declaring the Time Warner Cable iPad app as “unlicensed distribution of Viacom’s programming.”

Viacom pretty much expects Time Warner Cable to pay them extra for the rights to stream their content to tablets and expects the cable company to eat the additional cost. Their issued statement with the lawsuit reads, “With $5.2 billion in cash from operations last year, Time Warner Cable can certainly afford to provide our programming through this new broadband service without passing along any additional cost to its customers.”

The Time Warner Cable app is said to have been downloaded more than 360,000 times. If you’ve tried the app, what do you think about this whole deal? Should Viacom have the right to charge Time Warner Cable extra just because you basically have a new TV set (in this case an iPad) in your house? We’d love to hear arguments for both sides.

[via NY Times]

The Time Warner Cable iPad app was released just last week to overwhemingly high demand, allowing subscribers to live-stream TV for viewing on their iPads while connected to their home WiFi network. However, this week we’re hearing that the popular app is upsetting TV networks, which have begun sending cease-and-desists to the cable company.

The TV networks’ beef with the new app stems from their view of the iPad streaming as a separate service than cable TV. The networks, therefore, want to negotiate new terms and control the rights for this new avenue of content delivery. They don’t seem to take into account that the service only works when a subscriber is at home and connected to their Time Warner Cable modem, which is part of their paid-for cable and internet service.

It is unlikely that Time Warner Cable will be forced to shutdown the app. They are more likely to have to remove some channels and go through a new round of negotiations with each network. Considering that you can only view the channels on your iPad at home from the cable service you already pay for, do you think its fair that networks are asking to charge an additional fee for this?

Time Warner Cable had to address issues today with its just released iPad app. The app was launched yesterday morning, but crashed by the evening due to the overwhelming demand that caused severe load on the company’s servers. The company has temporarily fixed the issue by cutting back from 32 channels to 15.

The TWC iPad app allows for live streaming of TV programs to your iPad. It is the first app amongst cable or satellite companies to live stream TV while competitors’ apps only can turn your iPad into a giant TV remote. TWC views the resulting crash of their app as a good sign of demand. The following excerpt comes from the TWC blog:

We were pretty sure that our iPad app was going to be fairly popular, but we had no idea that it was going to be the most downloaded app in the iTunes store yesterday. The demand was overwhelming, in more ways than one. At about 8 o’clock last night the app crashed under a much heavier load than we anticipated. Our engineering team is working as hard as they can to put a fix in place and get everything up and running as soon as they can.

For the time being, the app is running with only 15 channels. We have found that by temporarily reducing the number of available channels, we can ease strain on the authentication process. This will enable us to offer at least some sort of an experience to our customers while we get a fix in place. We’ll add the other 17 channels back in as soon as we can fix the underlying issue, and we’ll be adding more channels in future iterations of the app as well.

On the one hand, this is a nice problem for us to have — it’s great to see that our customers are excited about this, and we’re thrilled to know that our vision of TV’s future is one that the public wants. In other words, it’s not a good party unless you run out of beer.

On the other hand, this is really frustrating for us and our customers, too. And we’re really sorry for the inconvenience. We know how frustrating it can be when a brand-new product doesn’t work well. Please bear in mind that this our first foray into the iPad app world, and the first cable company to offer live streaming to the iPad at all. We’re going to figure out a fix and implement it as soon as we possibly can.

We appreciate your patience and understanding, and again, we’re sorry for any frustration.

Sports fans rejoice as the latest update to Apple TV allows live streaming games for NBA League Pass and MLB.TV subscribers. The update also includes new support for AirPlay to stream from iOS 4.3 devices and support for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound with Netflix movies and TV shows.

NBA League Pass has two subscription models for online streaming, a $65 option that allows you to track your favorite 7 teams, or a $100 option for unlimited streaming. League Pass streams online content that can be accessed by computers and has mobile apps for Android and iOS. MLB.TV was previously available on Roku and Playstation 3 for streaming. It also has two subscription options with a $100 standard package and a $120 Premium package which gives you home/away broadcasts, multiple camera angles, and in-game DVR capability.

This is a pretty awesome deal for anyone who is a sports nut and needs to follow multiple teams across the league. The NBA is nearing the close of the regular season with the playoffs coming up and the MLB is in the middle of spring training and the long baseball season is about to kick off soon. So it’s a perfect time for you to pick up an Apple TV for $100 and start streaming all the sports you can handle.

The update also includes new AirPlay support for third-party iOS 4.3 apps allowing you to wirelessly stream video from your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Along with this is support for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound when watching movies or TV shows from Netflix. New slideshow themes for viewing photos, improved on-screen keyboard, and some security fixes round out the the new features of the update.

Nielsen studied the consumption of China’s Central Television (CCTV) versus online media platforms during the Chinese New Year Gala (NYG). The numbers have shifted this year, with more and more Chinese adopting technologies that allow them to stream the video on-demand through a computer instead. The Nielsen study concluded that while CCTV still had more viewers than the online media counterparts, the change in the numbers between 2010 and 2011 definitely suggest that more Chinese are switching to other platforms for delivering their media.

Nielsen also tracked the number of unique browsers on top Chinese websites during Chinese New Year. The top Chinese sites saw a significant increase in the number of unique users.

11 percent of Shanghai homes simultaneously used the Internet while watching the Gala show.

Bush has a book out at the moment and is touring the country trying to sell it. Today, he’ll be stopping at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto to have a few words with the world. Facebook users will have the opportunity to ask Bush questions – but good luck. This is the first time a U.S. President will appear on Facebook liveCheck out the live feed below.

Be kind, don’t swear, listen to the nice man, etcetera. Also remember that the book this man is promoting is several times proven plagiarized, and that just this past October http://wikileaks.org/ released a large batch of classified US military documents detailing 109,032 deaths in Iraq over a period of six years, “comprised of 66,081 ‘civilians’; 23,984 ‘enemy’ (those labeled as insurgents); 15,196 ‘host nation’ (Iraqi government forces) and 3,771 ‘friendly’ (coalition forces).” The man who was the President of the United States during the time these deaths occurred is now chilling with Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook in Palo Alto.

Billionaire David Alki has announced the launch of the first internet-based HD TV service in the US called FilmOn. The FilmOn service is an internet based streaming service that can stream 30 free to air networks and is based in LA. I would assume that means that the network shows and other content are from LA affiliates.

The service offers content from networks like CBS, ABC, NBC, KCAL, FOX, KTLA, Russia Today, BBC News, RAI Sports, Dubai Sports, TVE Spain, SCUZZ , FLAUNT and other networks. To use the FilmOn service you have to download a free HDi Player from the FilmOn website. The service can send content to the PC or to mobile devices.

Users need a broadband connection and the monthly fee for the service is $9.95. The HD video needs a connection of at least 1Mbps and HD is supported on mobile devices with Dolby 5.1 sound as well. The service has been in beta for the last year and has several million viewers according to FilmOn.

And, lucky for Cerevo, it’s the first digital camera to do so. The Japan-based Cerevo is happy with their new camera, which they’ve lovingly called the Cerevo Cam Live!. Owners will be able to livestream video from the camera, which will then be put on Ustream’s site, without having to upload from a PC or any other piece of hardware. Video will be streamed through the CIF, 352×288 reoslution, format, and the battery at a full charge will give you about two hours of livestream energy.

The best feature, though, is the fact that the Cam Live! will shoot videos in HD (1,280×720), WVGA (800×480), VGA (640×480), and “WEB” (320×240). And just in case you’re not a fan of options when you get done shooting a movie, or taking some snapshots, you’ll be able to let the camera upload to YouTube automatically. Physical feature wise, you’re still looking at a 9MP CMOS sensor, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, 3G HSUPA, a MicroSD card slot, USB port, and a 2.4-inch LCD display. And while the original was only sold in Japan, Cerevo plans to go international with the Cam Live! starting this Summer.
