Rivalry between Samsung and LG runs strong – the two companies took thinly veiled pot-shots at each other’s neighboring booths during press briefings at the Korea World IT Show today – and so with a brand spanking new LG Optimus Big on hand and a Samsung Galaxy S II in our pocket, it seemed fitting to see how the two uberphones compare. LG shook up ultraportables with the Xnote P210 late last year, a super-compact notebook which squeezed a 12.5-inch display into where you’d more commonly find an 11.3-inch panel; now the company is back with a new model based on the same narrow-bezel technology. The LG Blade P530 made its official debut earlier this month, and SlashGear scored some hands-on time at the Korea World IT Show today.
The Optimus Big isn’t one of LG’s most inspired names, but it certainly describes the new Android smartphone well. Its 4.3-inch display puts it among the biggest of the current Android crop, and unsurprisingly pits it against longtime rivals Samsung’s well-esteemed Galaxy S II. In a move that basically made the audience flip out and pull their hair out with excitement, Google announced that they’d soon be working with carriers around the USA and UK to create guidelines for device updates. What does this mean to you? It means that you’ll essentially KNOW what will be happening with your device in the future instead of guessing if it’ll be receiving an update to the newest Android version before the end of its lifespan. LG Display is reportedly ramping up 9.7-inch LCD IPS panel production for the iPad 2, after production issues supposedly hamstrung Apple's ability to get the coveted slate onto shelves. According to DigiTimes' sources, LG Display's shipments will only get back up to original estimates sometime this quarter; analysts have suggested that production rather than demand is the biggest limit on the iPad 2's sales success.

It's a week of bad news for ZTE: not only has Huawei sued them, but Apple has snatched back its place in the IDC global phone rankings for the past quarter. Having taken fourth place in Q4 2010, ZTE now slips to fifth; Apple takes fourth with 18.7m shipments for 5-percent of the mobile phone market, behind LG in third, Samsung in second and Nokia maintaining first place.

I hardly think I am alone in thinking that when Nokia pretty much abandoned MeeGo to tie up with Windows Mobile that MeeGo was dead. As it turns out MeeGo is still alive and kicking and LG is apparently going to be showing off a tablet that runs the OS along with a smartphone really soon. Whether or not the devices will be cool enough to grab any attention remains to be seen. I have strong doubts in a world dominated by iOS and Android.

According to market research firm NPD, thanks to the Verizon iPhone 4 launch, Apple has now become the third-largest mobile phone brand in the U.S. Sales for Apple's smartphones have reached 14 percent of the U.S. market, ranking them ahead of HTC, Motorola, and RIM. Only Samsung and LG come ahead with 23 percent and 18 percent, respectively.

When it comes to the mobile market for tablets and smartphones, ARM is the biggest name on the block for mobile processors and GPUs. ARM has some competition from NVIDIA with the Tegra line, but ARM is certainly the more popular of the two. LG Display has revealed some panel plans - including details on which customers are using its OLED screens for upcoming smartphones - in its Q1 financial results call; however, OLED TV scale displays aren't expected to reach mass production until mid-2013. According to SeekingAlpha's transcript, LG Display confirmed that, from this month, it will be supplying IPS tablet-scale panels to more than just Apple (which uses the screens for the iPad 2), while implying that as well as supplying Nokia with smartphone-sized screens, it will also be pushing panels for LG handsets in the middle of this year.
