As we edge closer to the release of LG’s next hero smartphone, it appears more and more likely that it will be coming with a display that’s nearly edge-to-edge. What this means is, like a “Fat Free” box of crackers, there is a little bit of a bezel around the edges, but it’s close enough to say it’s simply not there. The device that’s being pictured today in relation to LG’s next smartphone release is also being tied to the name LG Optimus G2.

This device has been suggested to be tagged also with the name Nexus 5 – that implying that it’d take the place of the current LG-made Nexus 4 device on the market right this minute. One rather important point against this possibility is the slightly larger photo of the device that’s been leaked with an LG logo at the bottom of it. If this device were, in fact, headed for a Google release, it’d have no branding up front at all.

This device has also been tipped – and seems to check out – with a 5.5-inch display with 1080p resolution. This device could very well be a new variant or an upgrade of the LG Optimus G Pro, that coming forth with a very similar display up front but a bit thicker body behind.

Because the LG Optimus G Pro is sill relatively new, on the other hand, it does make the most sense that this would be the long-awaited follow-up to the original Optimus G. This upgrade would place its screen between the original Optimus G and the Optimus G Pro and would upgrade processor power to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, just like what’s found in the Optimus G Pro, HTC One, and Samsung GALAXY S 4.

This device, while suggested to be coming with a Google push for their developer conference next week at Google I/O 2013, will much more likely be appearing the week after, at its earliest. There LG can avoid any entanglements in news blasts for the week from the conferences goings-on.

Meanwhile the LG Optimus G Pro launches on AT&T in the United States today – we’ve got our LG Optimus G Pro review ready for you to have a gander at if you feel so inclined as well. This device should very well lead the way to the Optimus G2 which may be coming presently.

LG’s Optimus G Pro phablet has launched on AT&T today, with the sizable smartphone on sale for the first time in the US. Priced at $199.99 with a new, two-year agreement, the Optimus G Pro has a 5.5-inch Full HD display and a 13-megapixel camera, with a quadcore 1.7GHz processor lurking inside.

That processor is used to good effect, as we discovered when we reviewed the Optimus G Pro earlier this month. Then, the LG impressed us with its smooth Android performance and the usefulness of the various sketching and note-taking apps, which are still included despite the phone lacking a dedicated stylus.

That’s arguably the most significant deciding factor between the Optimus G Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy Note II. Nonetheless, even without a pen, the big screen of the LG does have its advantages for multimedia consumption and web-browsing.

It’s likely to be too big for many users, but we should see features like dual-recording – which combines footage from the front and rear cameras into a single frame or video clip – showing up in smaller LG devices over the coming months.

If you’re convinced, the LG Optimus G Pro is available from AT&T today, though you’ll need to sign up to the usual two-year agreement with a mandatory voice and data plan. The phone has been up for preorder since May 3rd at $199.99.

The LG Optimus G Pro brings a massive upgrade to the LG Optimus G, a device put together so well that Google decided to use it for its most recent hero smartphone, the Nexus 4. The LG Optimus G Pro has been released internationally with essentially the same hardware build as you’re seeing here, AT&T’s additions being largely app-centric. That leaves the same high-powered processor, 5.5-inch display, and collection of odd software abilities that draw us in just as much as they did in the original.

Hardware

Up front of the LG Optimus G Pro is a 1080 x 1920 pixel display across 5.5-inches of IPS LCD. This equals 400 PPI resolution and the same amount of pixels the HTC One and the Samsung GALAXY S 4 have spread over a slightly larger area. The display reaches out to the sides of the device with a bezel that’s extremely narrow, this giving the phone the illusion of having a near-edge-to-edge screen.

The front of the device is covered by a single piece of reinforced glass from top to bottom with a bent-in flat edge that, with flat sides and rounded back, give the whole package a unique feel. While the design comments in our LG Optimus G Review suggested LG’s hardware to be a bit more slippery than the average phone, the Pro’s shape and size allow for a bit better grip.

The front panel is interrupted only by a single plastic bit up top to make way for the earpiece for phone calls and a physical button on the lower front surrounded by multi-colored LED light. This pulsing spectrum of color is easily one of the most well-implemented bits of finesse ever implemented on a smartphone. This feature alone pushes the hardware design over the edge: from Pretty Good to Unique and Cool.

Along the sides of the device you’ll find two mic holes (one on top, one on bottom), a standard-sized headphone jack with Dolby Digital audio technology for all your headphone music blasting adventures, and a microUSB port below. Also on top you’ll find a tiny black piece of plastic – this is your IR-blaster, aka your key to using this device as a remote control for a variety of electronics around your home, including but not limited to your television (most televisions, not just Smart TVs), stereo system, projector, Blu-ray player, and air conditioner.

On the right you’ve got your power button and on your left you’ve got your volume rocker below a third button. This last button is what LG calls a Quick Button. With this Quick Button you’ll be able to “get quick access” to whatever app you like. If you’re a photo-taking sort of person, set it to your camera. If you’d rather it connect to Google Search / Google Now, that’s an option as well. If you do decide to set it to Camera, the Quick Button also acts as a shutter button inside the camera app – just as it should.

This device feels nice to hold and, unlike some of its competitors, isn’t larger than the average adult’s hand grip. Where the LG Intuition fell a bit flat due to it’s massiveness, the aspect ratio of the LG Optimus G Pro allows it to be even larger yet fit in your hand far more naturally. Here we’ve got a phablet with a size that’s not too wild.

Software

Inside you’ve got LG’s newest approach to Android, complete with their complete utilization of the full processor power under the hood with oddities galore. One example of a simple – yet impressive – use of the power this device’s processor presents is the massive bubble that pops up when you unlock your screen. It and flipping through screens with a door-like drag happen so seamlessly that you’ll scarcely realize how slick it is. Until you use a phone later on with a lesser processor, of course.

LG’s software here keeps with the nice parts of Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, including Google Now, and push forward with features like QSlide apps. While I’m not entirely sure when the ability to have an app appear above the fold and accessible as a window in a desktop operating system app would be, here you’ve got the future right in front of you. This sort of floating app functionality is also seen in the Samsung Galaxy and Note line of smartphones and tablets in a just-as-mystifying implementation.

The notifications pull-down menu is utilized by LG in a variety of creative ways the likes of which no other hardware company has pushed to a smartphone. You’ve got brightness control, notifications, access to full settings, quick settings (toggles), QSlide apps, Music control (when music is playing), and Quick Remote. Each of these is customizable too, of course.

QuickRemote is LG’s current app interface for remote controlling your home hardware. This app allows you to work with the infra-red blaster that sits at the top of the device and allows you to control your TV, Cable box, Audio system, DVD player, Blu-ray player, Air conditioner, and projector. You’ll have to go through a short trial-and-error process to connect this control to each device around your home, but in general, anything that’s controlled by a normal universal remote can be controlled here.

Though you don’t have the Rubberdium Pen you did with the LG Intuition here with the Optimus G Pro, you still have access to apps like Note Pad and Notebook, both of which allow you to draw and take notes on your display with your finger. You also get a simple task manager to keep yourself on-point with notifications of to-do items, Video Wiz to edit your own self-filmed videos, and LG Tag+ to create your own unique NFC tags (not included in the box this time around).

In display settings you’ll find Smart screen, similar to a feature Samsung has been pushing with the last several smartphones it’s released, here detecting your eyes and keeping the device’s display awake so long as you’re looking at it. You can customize your home button LED light colors and alerts from this screen as well.

In Share & Connect in the device’s Networks tab in Settings you’ll find an NFC switch (off and on) aside Direct/Android Beam. With Wi-Fi direct you’ll be able to share files between mobile devices (that also have such connectivity abilities) and with NFC this connection is made extra-easy. You’ll also find File Networking to connect to your local network (if you’re sharing files via your PC, for example), and with SmartShare Beam you’ll be sharing files back and forth between LG devices specifically.

Then there’s Miracast – this being the first time we’ve seen the system named specifically since Google implemented this connectivity in Android Jelly Bean earlier this year. With Miracast you’ll have a new industry standard for wireless connectivity of devices, in this case allowing you to mirror your Optimus G Pro’s display to your high-definition television at high speed.

Have a peek at a demonstration of LG’s “World’s First Wireless Ultra HD Transmission Technology” filmed earlier this year at Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona. You’re seeing this hands-on with the LG Optimus G, this letting us know that the ability isn’t just there in the less-powerful of the LG hero devices, it’s ready to go for 4K televisions as well! Now we just need a 4K television to test it on with LG’s final implementation of the connection between on device and the other.

You’ll find the LG Optimus G Pro out-performing most devices on the market today regardless of the slightly larger display size it works with. Above you’ll find a gallery of benchmark results run on the device, many of which we’ve run for similar devices in the past. As you’ll see, this device’s biggest competitors are the HTC One and Samsung GALAXY S 4, the whole bunch running the same Qualcomm processor under the hood – the battle continues!

Camera

While we’ve done a slightly more extensive exploration of the abilities of this device’s camera earlier this year in our LG Optimus G Pro Photo Tour: Barcelona, you’ll also find a new set of examples below. This device uses a 13 megapixel camera on its back, a 2.1 megapixel camera on its front, and a set of odd abilities you’ll have a good ol’ time working with. NOTE: we’ll be including further examples of the Dual Recording feature in the near future. For now: courage!

Battery

With a 3,140 mAh battery it’s not easy to knock the power out of this device in one go. That said, if any display was going to do it, it’d be this beast’s. As you can see in the example here, you can either keep the device running actions for hours on end and kill it in less than 8 hours, or you can let it sit idle for many days. This appears to be the case with most devices running Qualcomm processors in this newest generation – we’re expecting this trend to continue.

Wrap-up

The LG Optimus G Pro is a rather fine piece of machinery. It’s offers you an alternative to the HTC One and/or Samsung GALAXY S 4 here up on the top tier with its similar display (larger, though again, with the same amount of pixels), identical processor, and surprisingly similar set of features. It also offers you a unique hardware build and a camera that’ll go very nearly toe-to-toe with the leaders.

You’ll find the LG Optimus G Pro costing the same or less than the competing top-tier smartphones out with AT&T right this minute and/or in the near future, and its feature set makes it a solid package in the battle against the other titans of this mobile industry. Here in this massive smartphone, LG has created an amalgamation of elements that’ll satisfy legacy LG lovers and newcomers to the size, all the same.

We’re still a week away from LG’s Optimus G Pro from officially releasing in the States, but as promised, pre-orders for the new handset have officially begun. The AT&T-exclusive device is available now for purchase, with a ship date of May 7 in the hopes that you’ll get your new Optimus G Pro on your doorstep in time for the May 10 launch.

The new phone will cost you $199 after signing a new two-year contract, or you can shell out $549 for the off-contract version if you so desire. Early adopters will also get a free LG black folio case to keep their new device safe from the elements, but it seems AT&T only has a handful of these, so if you’re going to pre-order the phone, there’s no better time than right now.

The Optimus G Pro looks to take on the Samsung GALAXY S 4, the HTC One, and the Galaxy Note II with a 5.5-inch full HD IPS display that has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. On the inside, there’s a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, coupled with 2GB of RAM to keep things going along smoothly.

The $199 price of the Optimus G Pro will land you 32GB of storage, with the ability to slap in a microSD card if you ever find yourself with not enough space for all those movies and music files. On the back you’ll spot a 13-megapixel camera with a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera that can record 1080p video. Check out our complete photo tour of the phone to get a better sense of the Optimus G Pro’s camera.

AT&T has officially announced pricing and availability for the new LG Optimus G Pro, and as expected, the new flagship smartphone from LG will be available exclusively on AT&T’s network starting May 10. Pre-orders start this Friday, May 3, at which point you’ll be able to grab one for $199 after signing a two-year contract with the carrier.

Some of the more notable specs of the Optimus G Pro include a gargantuan 5.5-inch display with a full 1080p HD resolution, and a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor on the inside, along with 2GB of RAM. The phone also has a 13MP rear camera, along with a 1.6MP front-facer for those selfies we know you love taking.

AT&T says that the Optimus G Pro will be eligible for the carrier’s recently-revamped $100 trade-in program, where you get at least $100 towards a new phone if you give them your old AT&T device, no matter how beat up it is. This means that you’ll get the new LG phone for $99 or less if you bring in your old phone to trade in.

We first laid hands on the phone back in February during Mobile World Congress in Spain, where we also took it on an adventurous photo tour, where we tested the phone’s camera to no end, and we received some pretty impressive results with the pictures that we took. You can check out our photo tour with the new device, as well as our hands-on session.

Today the device known as the LG Optimus G Pro has appeared in a leaked image which suggests that the company will be working with AT&T for its first release. This device has been released internationally to more than one market this year, and will be appearing in-person at a concert event in May. LG has been tipped to be working with Qualcomm once again to deliver the same processor embedded in the international version of the device, that being the Snapdragon 600.

LG’s push for the larger segment of the smartphone environment has this device heading their 2013 lineup. Have a peek at our hands-on experience with the LG Optimus G Pro international edition and notice the similarities to the image above. This device will be delivered with a slightly different set of flavors inside as evidenced by the wallpaper used in the Evleaks leak – blueberries are a primary wallpaper here while the international version has a much more warm-colored fruit.

This device appears by all means to have basically the same set of specifications as the international edition, this made possible by the Qualcomm processor’s ability to work with 4G LTE, unlike a wide cross-section of processors delivered before last year. One example of a processor changing between international and USA editions is the Samsung Galaxy S III, this device working with an Exynos processor outside of the states, a Qualcomm processor inside.

Have a peek at the LG Optimus G Pro timeline below to see more information on the device that LG will be revealing in May. This device will be taking on the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Note II and the Droid DNA from HTC, each of them coming with relatively large displays compared to the smartphone average as well. Join SlashGear for the musical reveal event on the first of May – we’ll be there with bells on!

This week the folks at LG have revealed the contents of their soon-approaching press event for New York City: the smartphone known as the LG Optimus G Pro. This device has been released internationally and will be appearing in the United States with 4G LTE capabilities and a set of specifications not unlike that of the international edition. This device will be revealed with full details at the event which will take place on the first of May in the evening at a concert event.

This concert will feature the band known as Atlas Genius. This is the latest in a line of similar events hosted by LG, Samsung, and most recently HTC. Just this past week an HTC mini-concert was held with musician Pharrell Williams in promotion of the HTC One smartphone release. Several months ago, Samsung brought the Samsung Galaxy Note II to the United States with a mini-concert put on by Kanye West.

Even Apple has joined in the fun with an appearance by the Foo Fighters at the iPhone 5 release event this past year. Now with the LG Optimus G Pro, LG will be the bringing an engagement to New York City. It’s not known at the moment if the smartphone will be available at the event for demonstrations or if the company will be revealing any release information before or after the music event.

With the release of the LG Optimus G Pro, LG will have effectively updated their large smartphone nearly-tablet-sized segment while the Verizon Intuition by LG remains out there for consumers looking for a pen-toting experience. Here with the LG Optimus G Pro, Qualcomm has also jumped onboard with the Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, this being the same processor coming with the HTC One and the Samsung GALAXY S 4.

If you weren’t excited about the next edition of LG’s hero device by now, the following news should spark your interest: apparently this smartphone is going to be so thin that it wont have room for a power button or volume buttons around its sides. With news of the LG Optimus G2 coming in from South Korean news sources that may or may not be entirely reliable, the concept certainly seems intriguing enough to be possible: could it be? The framework of this next-generation device is said to be such that the left, right, top, and bottom will have a completely non-traditional button layout.

While the LG Optimus G was so impressive that Google hired LG to make them their own in the Google Nexus 4, the G2 has to step things up a notch. With the 2013 wave of smartphones out-doing the G with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 processors (in the HTC One and Samsung GALAXY S 4), it wont just be the body that’s getting a cut. LG has also been tipped to be including Qualcomm’s best yet: the Snapdragon 800.

The LG Optimus G2 is being quoted as containing the following today, straight from the source speaking with MyDrivers. The physical design of this device may be the biggest change, but the final build will be one heck of a whopper!

It’s time again to get busy with an LG event for a massive release, this time in New York City with what we must assume is the LG Optimus G Pro for the United States! As the LG Optimus G Pro has been ramping up for release in all other areas of the earth save the USA, it’s high time we got some massive smartphone action of our own – starting May 1st! Have a peek at the invite here and let’s run down the clues as they come!

What we’ve seen of the LG Optimus G Pro thus far is a release on one side of the ocean, a push on the other, and signs of a USA release in recent weeks. With the LG Optimus G Pro and the Google Nexus 4 by LG continuing to make waves on AT&T, T-Mobile, and off-contract here in the USA, the LG Optimus G Pro (and its recent FCC appearance) has us guessing we’ll be getting at least an AT&T 4G LTE iteration before summer time.

The “Share the Genius” line in the invite suggests either that the device they’re about to show will be riddled with share-friendly features or that the name, Optimus G, is ready to share the spotlight with the bigger version of greatness. The LG Optimus G Pro takes the finer points of the LG Optimus G and amplifies them – not only do you get a larger display, you get a much more powerful processor from Qualcomm and photography features that had us giving the thumbs up back at MWC 2013.

Have a peek at the timeline below of recent LG mobile tips, suggestions, and otherwise excellent hands-on experiences to see if you can piece together this puzzle for yourself. LG will one way or another need to bring some heat now that the Samsung GALAXY S 4 and the HTC One are about to hit the market – make it count!

LG‘s Optimus G smartphone was released last year for a variety of carriers, including AT&T, and enjoyed widespread success among consumers. Following it up, the phone maker created the Optimus G Pro, which we saw tipped in an FCC posting late last month. Now word has surfaced that this massive 5.5-inch phablet handset will be arriving at AT&T in May.

We saw LG’s giant Optimus G Pro handset earlier this year at the 2013 Mobile World Congress, and we got out hands on it back in February, giving it a quick review, which you can read here. Rumors concerning the handset have been swirling for awhile now, but we’re hearing that the smartphone will be finally hitting shelves via AT&T next month, replacing the current Optimus G offering.

Tips have been rolling in, and others are reporting the same thing as well, including the folks over at Android Central. The announcement could end up happening any time now, and according to the tips, the rollout date is said to be May 10, meaning there’s about a solid month of waiting left (assuming the rumors are true). Once available, this giant upgrade to an already popular handset could give HTC’s One quite a bit of competition.

The LG Optimus G Pro boasts a quad-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600-series processor, as well as 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space. The battery is huge, not surprising given the 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 full HD display, which will use more than its fair share of power. There’s a rear 13-megapixel camera, as well, and 4G LTE support. No word has surfaced about the handset hitting other carriers, but so far it seems like an AT&T release is penciled in.

If you were thinking about trading in that recently-dominant LG Optimus G or Google Nexus 4 for a brand new monster soon, look no further – the LG Optimus G2 may be on the way quick! If you’ve been working with the LG Optimus G or the basically-the-same-hardware LG Nexus 4, you know good and well that Qualcomm and LG work rather well together under the hood. Now with the benchmarks we’re seeing today, their team up (so good Google had them make the Nexus 4) is back with a second wave!

As you’ll know well by the looks we’ve had at the LG Optimus G Pro, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor is an absolute beast. It’s the second-highest most powerful processor Qualcomm makes today – so great, both the HTC One and the Samsung GALAXY S 4 have opted to employ it. Then there’s the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, a step up, a quad-core processor intended only for the most dominant devices of this generation, complete with a fabulous Adreno 330 GPU for graphics superiority.

That’s the processor we’re seeing here in the GLBenchmark results found today to be showing the LG D801. This is a device that’ll be hitting up T-Mobile to start with, bringing with it a set of specifications that’ll blow your mind.

• Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
• T-Mobile 4G LTE
• 1080 x 1794 pixel display
• MSM8974 (aka Snapdragon 800)

The benchmark list you see above also shows the “HTC 6435LVW” – note here that this is the HTC DROID DNA, while the LG E975 below it (with the same score) is the LG Optimus G (the original.) Right along with it is the LG Optimus G Pro which gets a similar score because of its massive display – note that the DROID DNA and the LG Optimus G Pro should, by all means, be getting different scores because the G Pro has a more advanced processor – but again, this isn’t an all-encompassing benchmark, it’s only showing Offscreen 1080p processing – no worries!

Have a peek at our archive of bits and pieces surrounding this upcoming LG Optimus G2 as it makes its way to T-Mobile soon – stay tuned!

With the T-Mobile UNcarrier pricing list and details revealed one day early, the 4th-largest carrier in the country may very well be showing off not the plan, but the devices that’ll attach to the plan at their big event! March 26th is the day that we’re going to see the full show – that’s tomorrow or today, depending on when you’re having a peek at this post – but what we know before the fact is quite telling. Several FCC listings and the tease of several machines is what we’ve got right now.

LG Optimus G Pro

Though it’d be quite a scandal if the LG Optimus G Pro were released with T-Mobile before it hit AT&T, we can certainly cross our fingers that this monstrous beast will bestow its greatness on the big pink carrier this week. As it’s already prepared for work with AT&T radios via the FCC, T-Mobile’s technology may very well be pumped up and ready for action here as well.

Have a peek at our hands-on with the LG Optimus G Pro in a photo tour of Barcelona – through which you’ll learn one whole heck of a lot more data on the device!

Nokia Lumia 521

It should come as no surprise that the Nokia Lumia 521 would be chosen as one of the first devices to be unveiled here in the United States under these new carrier plans. This device was revealed at Mobile World Congress 2013 as one of several budget-minded smartphones working with Windows Phone 8 by Nokia, aiming for the everyman without sacrificing the high-quality craftsmanship and Nokia-way that comes with every Lumia device. You’ll find this device having hit the FCC this week.

Have a peek at our hands-on with the Lumia 520 – the original version (the international version) of the device we’ll be seeing here on T-Mobile as the 521. It’ll be essentially the same device with a few choice changes to the hardware build – expect it! Watch out for the slightly larger Lumia 720 as well.

BlackBerry Z10

Even though the BlackBerry Z10 was available to business customers with T-Mobile back on the 11th of March, it would still make a lot of sense for the company to give some hands-on time and another kick in the bootloader to this smartphone at this week’s event. Once it’s available to the general public, the stream of BlackBerry love can continue – and maybe it’ll even have 4G LTE connectivity. Can we dare to hope?

Have a peek at our BlackBerry Z10 review right this minute as it appears internationally and let us know if you’d jump on board if it were available to you from T-Mobile this week.

Lenovo IdeaTab A1000-F

Though it’s rather unlikely that a device that, according to Engadget, is passing through the FCC this week with Wifi only would be revealed by T-Mobile this week, it’s still possible. This machine is a 7-inch tablet we heard about earlier this year with not one whole heck of a lot of surprises inside, but a Q2 2013 release time on the books. Watch out for it one way or the other!

Have a peek at our hands-on with Lenovo’s A and S-Series tablets from Mobile World Congress 2013 as well. Keep in mind that T-Mobile has been carrying tablets for several years now – it may be time to go big as they go small!

iPhone 5

It may be that T-Mobile has finally signed a deal with Apple to get the iPhone on their shelves, but this is the least likely device of the collection here in this article. It’s much more likely that a carrier like T-Mobile would wait for Apple to reveal a new generation of device before they announce a partnership – especially with the new subsidy plans in the UNcarrier push.

Don’t forget the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy Note II, also – the Galaxy device was the first device to have T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network switched on while the HTC One has been guaranteed to see the carrier sooner than later! Remember – this T-Mobile event happens at 8AM PST tomorrow – that’s 10AM Central, and 11AM Eastern Standard Time. Don’t you dare miss it!

This week the LG Optimus G Pro appears to have popped its head up with AT&T 4G LTE in mind as the FCC approves with a resounding thumbs up. What we’re seeing here is an FCC approval process posting with what’s said to be the code-name for the LG Optimus G Pro, just a few characters away from the original Optimus G. This device, if indeed coming to AT&T this Spring, will be a competitor for the also-giant Samsung Galaxy Note II (and possibly III) the whole year long.

As it’s been discovered by Engadget, the LG Optimus G Pro phantom is running on the bands that AT&T does indeed use. That’s 4G LTE and all, ready to rock with all the Optimus G Pro excellence we’ve seen come out of this device just this past month internationally. When we had a look at it, we made sure to test out what LG let us know it was very proud of in its photography skills.

The LG Optimus G Pro works with a massive 5.5-inch display that’s sharp as a tack – 1080p and working with the Qualcomm Snadragon 600 quad-core processor. That’s the same beast we’re seeing work some real magic in the HTC One, this time also packing heat with 2GB of RAM and Android 4.1+ Jelly Bean up front. We’ve seen this device in white and in black – and they’re both rather fabulous.

Have a peek at our LG Optimus G Pro tour of Barcelona and let us know if you’d be all about this smartphone if it’d be released by AT&T super, super soon. Or better yet, if you’re thinking about getting a massive smartphone such as this but want to wait to see if IFA 2013 is home to the release of the Samsung Galaxy Note III! Or maybe just a Tab or two.

Have a peek at the LG Optimus G Pro timeline below as well for more up-to-date massively LG action than you can handle!

Looks like LG is going to be debuting its own eye-recognition technology, possibly to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S IV’s rumored eye-scrolling tech. LG’s new tech will be available for the LG Optimus G Pro next month in Korea. It will be part of an entire value pack of updates, which includes a new camera feature, a “Magic Remote Pad and Text Keypad”, customizable LED lighting, and the first Android emoticons to come in different colors.

The Smart Video feature is a new multimedia UX feature that will enhance the user’s viewing experience. Through the use of advanced eye recognition technology, the phone will be able to detect whether or not its user’s eyes are looking at the smartphone screen. If the user is looking away, the video will pause. When the user stares back to the screen, the video will resume playing. This will make sure that if you’re distracted, you still won’t miss a single moment of the video.

The value pack update also brings several other features. The “Dual Camera” feature will let you simultaneously take pictures with your rear and front-facing camera, so that you can “be a part of the story” and not just an observer. The Magic Remote Pad and Text Keypad feature will work together with the QRemote function to allow you to use your LG device to control LG-branded Smart TVs. There will be customizable LED lights, which will let you customize notifications for specific contacts. Lastly, there will be colored emoticons for your device, so you don’t have to stick to the boring, old, green Android.

LG, like Samsung, understands that hardware isn’t the only major driving point for devices. Dr. Jong-seok Park, the CEO of LG’s Electronics Mobile Communications Company, stated, “LG is continuously innovating to offer creative ways to offer a user experience that adds value to our customers. It’s the positive UX that will differentiate smartphones in 2013 and beyond, not only cutting-edge hardware specs.” LG will be bringing this value pack update to not only the Optimus G Pro, but to its other high-end smartphones in the future as well.

The second device to work with this growing standard is the LG Optimus G Pro, a device we’ve had our hands on more than once recently as well. With the SlimPort HDMI Adapter, the folks at Analogix have taken hold of this soon-to-explode standard technology and have made it a real working model – with the device we’re reviewing today, you’ll be outputting video from your Nexus 4 or Optimus G Pro to an HDMI cable to your HDTV at full 1080p – sound included!

It may seem strange to see a review of a peripheral as small as this lovely little Analogix SlimPort HDMI adapter out here in the wild simply due to the large amount of relatively similar solutions on the market. Whenever 20 companies make an smartphone accessory, it always ends up being difficult to tell them apart. When it comes to the SlimPort solution here, on the other hand, there’s really only one way to go – especially when you’re using the LG Optims G Pro or the Google Nexus 4 (also made by LG.)

Last week we were told that the brand new LG Optimus G Pro would be carrying official MyDP standard connectivity in its microUSB port. With that, we heard from SlimPort that they’d be more than happy to let us have a peek at their technology in a rather simple-looking HDMI connector. As it turns out, LG was rather pumped up about this connectivity as well:

“With SlimPort, LG is able to deliver unprecedented functionality at a lower cost, because of its streamlined design and standard USB connector. SlimPort unleashes content from the Optimus G Pro smartphone, making it a snap to share and enjoy videos, games, photos and more on any screen.” – Dr. Ramchan Woo, division leader/smart phone platform division of LG Mobile Communications Company

You’re able to pick up any of several different SlimPort accessories to work with your Nexus 4, LG Optimus G Pro, or future MyDP-enabled devices. The one we’ve got here connects on one end to the microUSB port on your smartphone, the other to an HDMI cord (which you must already own), the HDMI cable then connecting to your secondary display of choice. The reason you’d pick this adapter up instead of the company’s HDTV Cable (microUSB straight out to HDMI), is the microUSB port it works with.

With the microUSB port on the adapter, you’re also able to connect a microUSB cord in that’s also connected to a wall socket – this way your smartphone (or perhaps tablet in the future) is being charged at the same time you’re outputting massive amounts of graphics. That said, this solution also allows you to work without plugging in to the wall – a definite bonus that places this technology over solutions like MHL which, on devices like the Samsung Galaxy S II and III, demand external power to work.

SlimPort’s solution here also requires very little power to utilize. We’ve watched entire movies on the Nexus 4 with this HDMI adapter without external power, in fact, and the LG Optimus G Pro works even longer than the Nexus 4 – what with the larger battery, and all. SlimPort also offers (or will offer in the near future) VGA and DVI out as well.

So have a peek at this HDMI adapter or check out the rest of the collection at SlimPort – you’ll be paying right around $30 USD if you need an adapter today, and the rest of the collection will be appearing online soon. Also have a peek at our Nexus 4 tag portal for more information on this radically popular Google-fresh LG-made smartphone, chock-full of Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor goodness.

This week we’ve had the pleasure of working with the brand new LG Optimus G Pro, taking photos as we covered the technology conference known as Mobile World Congress – of the 2013 variety. This device is one that we’ve now got in our possession still, and we’ll be bringing you a review in full in just a few days time. But meanwhile we’ve taken what LG has been very clear is a proud point for them in this device and put it to the test, right in the thick of thousands and thousands of ravenous mobile lovers in Barcelona, Spain – enjoy.

Before we go any further, you should know that this is just the second in what we’re expecting will be an extended series of Photo Tour posts here on SlashGear. The first was back a few months ago with the HTC Evo 4G LTE, a device whose photo setup was being pushed by its makers at the time. Of important note is the fact that both that device and this one both use Qualcomm Snapdragon processors – from different generations, yes, but both coming with architecture that Qualcomm is proud to speak about as having fabulous photo processing abilities. This time they team with LG, and here we go again on a different corner of the earth – Spain.

The first image you see above was shot with the camera right out of the box, automatic settings from start to finish, the shot taken in the morning of a Barcelona city street. Note that this photo was also the subject of another hands-on post earlier this week, the LG Pocket Photo – a miniature photo printer that requires no ink to use – like magic! Below you’ll see one of our first examples of an HDR photo. The shutter speed on this device, even with HDR, is rather quick – but because of the nature of HDR photos, you’ll still see multiple instances of the same people walking in this MWC 2013 crowd.

Below this you’ll find a gallery of photos taken in the same location as what you see above. With the quick shooting mode on this device, you’re able to collect a massive amount of photos in undeniably quick succession – 20 shots before it has to stop and think about what it’s done. The best way for you to visualize this here in still photos is to click (or tap) one of the photos below and move rapidly through the gallery with your arrow buttons. This will only work on a desktop computer with our gallery system unless you’ve got a wildfire-fast tablet or smartphone – if you do, go for it! The goal here it to see the images as a sort of stop-motion animation. When you do, you’ll see that this beast is a snappy shooter.

Another example of an HDR photo can be seen next – the big LG logo. Here you’ll get an idea of how this device shoots something lit up in a rather mixed-lighting environment. Again you’ll notice the multiple instances of the same faces because of the multi-exposure that happens when you shoot an HDR shot.

A macro photo can be seen next, even though the LG Optimus G Pro isn’t promoted for its macro abilities, you’ll find that this photo does the trick. The subject matter is the G Pro Quick Cover – an official LG-made cover for this device you can read all about over on Android Community. Up close and personal without a special setting looks rather nice and clear with the 13 megapixel camera we’re right here and now using with the LG Optimus G Pro.

Another HDR photo is next, in this case showing an especially dark locale. You’ll find that in this Beer shop in the midst of this week’s convention venue, the blacks have become in many cases a lighter shade of gray. With this you’ll see that there’s not much that you cannot see – that can be especially valuable if you’re doing photography for documentation rather than for the sake of high art. If you want 100% true-to-life colors, you wont want to use HDR with the Optimus G Pro.

Then there’s a two-up photo set here, the first of a Coke can taken without HDR, the next being that same Coke can, this time with HDR switched to “on”. You’ll be able to tell one from the other only with extremely sharp eyes – and by noticing that I’ve accidentally placed my finger into the edge of the HDR photo. The HDR photo looks almost identical to the non-HDR photo (besides the finger and the television picture behind the can, for obvious reasons). The HDR version is ever-so-slightly more intense, especially in the darks across the range – the red in the can, for example, is a bit more deep.

The gallery you’re having a peek at below shows two different examples of what the LG Optimus G Pro captures with its own unique version of a Photo Sphere. If you’ll remember back a few weeks when a new version of Android Jelly Bean was introduced, Google revealed Photo Sphere – a built-in camera mode that creates a panorama photo, but capturing a massive photo that covers all directions, something like what you see when you head to Street View in Google Maps. You’ll also remember that while it works great some times, it – at other times – doesn’t work so perfectly. The same is true of LG’s iteration of this feature, even with a slightly different user interface.

Another gallery rests below, this time showing a set of examples of a regular old panorama. This standard panorama mode has produced marginally better results for us thus far than the sphere-like mode above. It is important here – as it always is with panorama shooting at this time in history – to drag the camera across your scene at an even rate – and not too slow, not too fast either. One of the photos was taken at the Google Head Space party during MWC – as you can see, this club area was rather dark, and didn’t work too well with the panorama mode in the end. The others were taken on a bridge inside the main MWC 2013 event, lighting being a bit more generous.

Next you’ll see another example of a photo taken indoors of a rather large, open area at Mobile World Congress. The first shot was taken without HDR, the second was taken in HDR mode. This example set shows just a bit more clear the difference between the two – generally this is the case when you’ve got the possibility of a much more large range of colors and levels of light and dark.

The nighttime photo you see below is taken from across the street from the Mobile World Congress 2012 venue. This is a place where many MWC-goers stop on the train to transfer trains as it’s a large hub from one place to another – notably the new venue, mind you. The important point here is the levels of light in the darkness – and the idea that this photo was captured by hand. Normally a photo captured here at this time by hand – with most smartphone cameras, that is – would have lots of light streaks due to the shutter being open for enough time to capture the correct amount of light. In this case, LG’s setup allows you to do this much quicker – and the result is obvious.

Finally you’ll find a lovely gallery full of photos taken at one of the more challenging locations a person can take a photo at with results that look more than terrible. It is – once again – the Mobile World Congress 2013 Google party: Google Head Space. There are two rooms here, the first a smaller one made for chilling out and having a drink amongst a DJ mixing tunes under a massive Google Play Music set of orange headphones. The second is a massive room with a stage that held both Tinie Tempah and Florence and the Machine.

LG announced what they call the “world’s smallest” wireless charger for smartphones here at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We ended up getting a peak at the new accessory just to see how small it really is. The result? It’s not necessarily tiny by any means, but it does shave off a few centimeters compared to other wireless charging devices.

The hockey puck wireless charger, dubbed the WCP-300, charges up Qi-compatible devices, like LG’s own Nexus 4, Spectrum 2, and Optimus G Pro, and it sits at just 6.9cm in diameter. The back plugs into a traditional microUSB port in order to feed juice to devices wirelessly. However, only the Spectrum 2 and the Nexus 4 support the wireless charger in the US.

Of course, though, LG will be releasing more smartphones in the future with Qi wireless charging functionality, and the company hopes that more smartphones will jump on board with the wireless charging protocol as well. After all, the wireless charger doesn’t do much good if you don’t have a phone that supports it.

LG will be releasing the wireless charger in South Korea this week at a price of 65,000 won (around $60). However, the company expects to roll out the accessory worldwide over time, so it’ll arrive in the US at some point this year we’re hoping. Plus, $60 isn’t too bad of a price for the world’s smallest wireless charger, so hopefully LG keeps it that way when it eventually comes to the US.

It’s time to connect to a printer again, this time in a very miniature way with the LG Pocket Photo and the Optimus G Pro for good measure! The LG Pocket Photo is a pocketable printing machine that’ll print out tiny 2 by 3-inch photos created with a special process that uses no ink – like magic! The coolest bit about this printer may be the way you connect with it – all you need to do is tap your NFC-laden smartphone to the printer (with the apropriate app open, of course), and your photo will print in right around 30 seconds.

The LG Pocket Photo is 4.76 x 2.83 x 0.94 inches in size and will be taking some little packets of photo paper – special fancy photo paper, mind you – that you’ll be able to purchase individually. The final result is not unlike what you’d create with an instant Polaroid camera, with an image rather true to what you had on the screen. And it’s just so cute!

It’s not entirely clear at the moment if you’ll need to be using an LG smartphone or not with this device at the moment, and you are able to work with Bluetooth as well as NFC, but one thing is for sure: you will need the Pocket Photo app. Which doesn’t do anything for you if you’ve not got the printer, of course. The app is also able to do some basic photo editing and generate QR codes that you’ll subsequently be able to print as well.

Note: we started the process here with the LG Optimus G Pro, then found it easier to just transfer the photo we had to the LG Optimus G units they had on display because they’d already had the Pocket Photo app installed. The resulting photo looks fabulous even though it’d been taken with one device, transferred to the other, then printed wirelessly with an instant process.

The printing process this machine uses is Zink – that’s Zero Ink paper technology. The process is a combination of efforts between the LG Pocket Photo and the paper itself, the paper having a layer of dye crystals that change color according to heat generated by the device. The resulting photo is ever-so-slightly warm when you receive it and doesn’t have any ink to smear – it’s instantly ready to be touched, if you like.

This device will be coming to greater Europe in April and will be costing you right around 130 Euro MSRP. At the moment there don’t seem to be any solid final price or release dates released for the device – we’re hoping soon as well!

LG has brought the big guns to Mobile World Congress, in the shape of the Optimus G Pro, a whopping 5.5-inch Full HD Android smartphone. One of the largest non-pen-enabled phones around, the Optimus G Pro runs a 1.7GHz quadcore processor from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro stable, and isn’t left out of the megapixel race with a 13MP snapper on the rear.

There’s also a 2.1-megapixel camera on the front, and LG has given its photo app a polish with new features like focus tracking. That allows the Optimus G Pro to lock onto a subject in frame and use face tracking to follow them around, making sure they’re aways in focus. It’s nothing new for standalone point-and-shoots, but it’s impressive to see on a phone.

The units LG has brought along to MWC this week are Korean-spec, so they have some enhancements that models outside of the country won’t get. That includes a digital TV tuner, and in fact there’s a huge pull-out antenna for that. The UI is also Korean spec, but at least gives us a glimpse into how LG has modified the interface for the Optimus G Pro: there’s more use of the notifications bar, for instance, to take advantage of the space on offer.

Optimus G Pro hands-on video:

That big screen certainly makes its presence known. Its an IPS LCD, and LG is really pushing the technology over Samsung’s favored AMOLED: LG reckons its Optimus G Pro screen is 2.3x sharper. It’s certainly bright face-on, though maybe it’s the bright lighting of the show floor but viewing angles aren’t the very best we’ve seen. Nonetheless, even when you’re up close the 400ppi resolution is flawless.

Update: Looks like it was the show floor lighting doing the Optimus G Pro a disservice. We had some time to play with the new LG monster in more regular lighting conditions, and the screen was instantly more impressive: viewing angles aren’t a problem, and colors have a richness to them that border on AMOLED-style vibrancy without being over-saturated.

There’s also a useful multi-window feature LG has baked into Android, allowing users to open multiple apps simultaneously and view them in floating windows with variable transparency. As we’ve seen from Samsung, the argument here is that you can keep watching a video while simultaneously replying to emails and other messages.

All in all, it’s an impressive phone – if you have the depth of pockets for it. 5.5-inches is simply huge, and without a stylus LG might not grab the same crowd as fell for the Galaxy Note II. We’ll save full judgement for when we get our hands on a review unit, however.

LG hasn’t been shy with the Optimus G Pro, its 5.5-inch 1080p quadcore behemoth, but now we know the oversized Android handset is headed to North America sometime in Q2 2013. Fronted by a 1920 x 1080 Full HD display that’s capable of 50-percent more brightness than rival phones, LG says, the Optimus G Pro also introduces some new software features, including a “Dual Recording” system whereby both the front and rear cameras shoot simultaneously, meaning that whoever is taking the photo also gets included in a 360-degree panorama.

There’s also tracking focus in the camera, something common on standalone shooters but more rare on smartphones, together with a dual-window multitasking system similar to what we’ve seen Samsung do on the Galaxy Note II. Buyers in South Korea will get full QShopping support, for online price comparisons and ordering while you’re browsing physical stores.

As for the rest of the hardware, it’s a 150.2 x 76.1 x 9.4mm phone tipping the scales at 172g, and LG will be offering it in both “indigo black” and “luna white.” There’s LTE, HSPA+ and EVDO inside, along with WiFi (and WiFi Direct support), Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, HDMI SlimPort output, USB 2.0 Host, and a microSD card slot for up to 64GB cards to augment the 32GB of onboard storage.

The 1.7GHz dualcore processor – Qualcomm’s 600 Series Snapdragon – is paired with 2GB of RAM, meanwhile, and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with LG’s usual tweaks. The main camera runs to 13-megapixels, while the front is 2.1-megapixels, and the whole thing is powered by a sizable 3,140 mAh battery.

Those in Korea will be able to snap up the LG Optimus G Pro from Wednesday, February 20, across three carriers simultaneously. Those in North America, Japan, and elsewhere in the world will have to wait for a sequential launch sometime in the second quarter, though our guess would be that LG will have more to share at Mobile World Congress next week.
