This week the folks at LG are coming in heavy with the many varieties of Android they’ll be presenting the globe with throughout 2012, one of the more recognizable ones being the LG Optimus 3D Max. This device takes what LG delivered last year with the Optimus 3D and amps it up with a much brighter display and a bit more power under the hood – not to mention a slimmer device overall. One of the biggest complaints users had about the Optimus 3D originally was that it ended up being bulkier than they’d hoped – now we’re seeing perhaps the Optimus 3D perfected – is it enough to convince us that glasses-free 3D is really a business we want to get into?

What we’ve got here is what feels like a much less bulky device, first of all. The original Optimus 3D was awesome in its first to market ability to use 3D without glasses, but never really felt like an everyday device because of its mass. Now LG is banking that the mass reduction almost exclusively will be enough to boost this phone’s sales to acceptable levels. This device has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 5 megapixel camera (two of them on the back, in fact).

The LG Optimus 3D came to the USA as the LG Thrill for AT&T last year, and having just put it back in the box for the final time this past week I can certainly say the following. The LG Optimus 3D Max is certainly smaller and lighter than its predecessor. That said, the 3D technology appears to be exactly the same – take that how you will.

This device has Gingerbread right out of the box, a 4.3-inch display with NOVA technology, and of course has the same 3D lenticular technology as it had in its first iteration and will be attempting to woo the masses with that factor as a winning feature for a perfect odd device. For more information on LG’s line of device for 2012 hit up our [LG portal] or for all the awesome mobile action you can handle hit up our [MWC 2012 portal] all week long! Note also that we’ve got more photos and video on the way for this and the rest of the LG line soon!

The next generation of 3D smartphones has begun to drop here just one year after we first saw similar devices drop at Mobile World Congress 2011. It appears that LG will be the first big manufacturer to come back swinging with a new Optimus 3D, this time called the LG Optimus 3D Cube complete with 3D video editing. At the moment it appears that this device is only set to be released in Korea, but afterwards we can expect this handset to hit at least one carrier here in the United States – bet on it!

This device continues the trend of adding more and more letters to the name of a device in order to make it seem more awesome, this time actually improving the specifications along with the name though as well. What we’ve got here is a massive 4.3-inch IPS display for brightness and beastly sharpness, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor from what we must assume is Texas Instruments OMAP line once again, and a very similar shape to the last Optimus 3D model all around.

This time around though the device is much thinner than before, it measuring in at a tiny 126.8 x 67.4 x 9.6 mm, this including an NFC chip as well. This device is coming with Android 2.3 Gingerbread with no word on a timeframe for Ice Cream Sandwich and does include a custom user interface like the first 3D model from LG with lovely 3D glasses-free excellence across the display.

This device also works with the awesome LG Tag system which allows you to make groupings of settings then attach those settings to an NFC-activated label. You can then switch the way your phone looks and acts by simply placing it near the card with the NFC tag in it whenever you wish. In addition, the LG Optimus 3D Cube has full 3D video editing software as well as a 3D mapping application right out of the box.

We fully expect to see this device live and in action next week at Mobile World Congress 2012 – see you there!

Leading up to Mobile World Congress 2012, we’re seeing heaps of leaked images and details of devices in the mobile world, the latest being the LG Optimus 3D 2. This device is set to be the next generation 3D device from LG, the first being of course the LG Optimus 3D, and is set to trump the first edition with specifications that make it thinner, lighter, and as you can see – whiter. This device will also do away with capacitive buttons if our sources are correct, the front of the device relying on buttons from the operating system instead – but will it be Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich?

The question remains as the leaks to not confirm the newest version of Android and the image we’ve got at the moment has an interface that could just as easily be Ice Cream Sandwich as it could be Froyo. This device sill have a few other cosmetic changes also, with the volume button and the 3D switch switching sides from the right to the left for this iteration. LG is setting us up for something brand new, but will it be a big enough change to bring us back after a slightly lackluster first edition?

This device also has the name LG Optimus 3D Max and will almost certainly share its 9.8mm thick body with the LG Optimus Vu at this year’s Mobile World Congress. This 3D device is likely to have the same screen found in the Optimus LTE, hi-res IPS sharpness and all, and will be trumped only by the Vu in its newness. Follow the action via our [MWC 2012] portal and don’t miss a beat at the end of this month!

The Optimus 3D phone didn’t gain a huge amount of traction but it did set an important milestone as a flagship glasses-free 3D handset. And LG is poised to push that legacy forward with a phone we knew now only by its code-name, the CX2. Now, according to a new report, it looks like the shelf name might be the 3D Max.

This would make it the first smartphone with the term “3D” at the front of its name. The insider information comes from Israeli website GSM-Israel, which has a solid track record of leaking details that are later proven true. Based on earlier information we’ve seen, the phone will have a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch display, and a built-in 3D camera for still shots and video.

Of course, the tough part of selling a 3D phone right now is the lack of content. Sprint put out an aggressive campaign for its Evo 3D device that encouraged users to create their own content with the built-in 3D camera. Third-party app makers have been less enthusiastic, but perhaps at next month’s Mobile World Congress, where the 3D Max is expected to be fully unveiled, we’ll see advancements in this area.

LG has hinted at plans for a follow-up to their glasses-free 3D smartphone, the LG Optimus 3D. The main improvement on this new 3D-capable phone, besides upgraded specs to keep in line with competitors next year is a much slimmer chassis. The company hopes to have this new “LG Optimus 3D 2″ ready for sometime in 2012.

In an interview with Pocket-lint, one of the developers of the LG Optimus 3D, Dr. Henry Noh, explains that the LG Optimus 3D in its current form isn’t the “slimmest and sexiest phone on the street.” The goal then is to make the next iteration much slimmer and almost as thin as the thinnest phones set to launch next year so that 3D technology won’t be associated with bulkiness.

Noh also says that all the phones next year will look pretty much the same. The standard 4.3-inch display this year will get larger next year as profiles get slimmer. But everyone phone will sport about the same size screen, same thinness, same camera, and same OS. “It’s so boring.”

Hence, Noh views 3D as a major feature that will differentiate the Optimus 3D 2 as long as it can be packaged in a similarly slim chassis as non-3D competitors.

“Next year, all the phones are going to be as thin as, let’s say, 6mm. You throw in 3D, and because of the thickness and stuff, it becomes 7mm. But I bet you 90 per cent of the population won’t know the difference,” said Noh. “Eventually, we want to make it so that having the 3D won’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be thicker. That’s going to be a differentiating factor that comes for free to the user.”

It may not look like its actually alive and grabbing you like something from Avatar, but it sure gets close. What we have here is the glasses-free 3D powered LG Thrill 4G from AT&T. We have seen this before known as the Optimus 3D and I unboxed that too. What makes this phone special is not only does it have a dual-core CPU but it has dual cameras. It can capture and playback 3D video as well as play 3D games and other things all without those sexy red and blue glasses. Check below for more details.

Most of the specs we already know but I’ll go over the important parts. It features a 1 Ghz dual-core TI OMAP 4 processor, a 4.3″ 480×800 glasses-free 3D diplay, then it has those cameras around back. dual 5 megapixel cameras for capturing 3D help out around back. LG is calling this the first device on their “Tri-Dual” architecture. What does that mean — dual-core, dual-memory, and dual-channel. It also comes standard with an 8 GB Micro SD card and a 1540 mAh battery all wrapped up and running Android 2.2 FroYo but should get Gingerbread soon.

Overall the design is pretty sleek and you could even call it purdy. The rear has those cameras as well as the aluminum strip that matches nicely with recent LG offerings such as the LG G-Slate and G2x. The back cover is a soft touch plastic with a very light and barely noticeable pattern that almost seems like it was carbon fiber inspired, it’s a nice touch. Around front is the usual capacitive android buttons as well as that all popular front facing camera for chat. The device features HDMI-Out and they supplied the cable unlike most carriers or OEM’s so thank AT&T and LG for that one.

I don’t want to give away too many details before the full review but the phone has plenty of 3D inspired apps installed. We have 3D Pictures, 3D videos, 3D games, and even a 3D youTube. Gameloft has a 3D game market that has been pre-installed for all you fans. I played NOVA 2 in 3D for about 25 minutes today instead of working, it was that fun. The dedicated 3D button nicely takes you right into all the 3D action and I liked they made it so simple.

I will keep this short and sweet so make sure to check out the video unboxing below for more details as well as all the photo’s in the gallery to enjoy them in the full size goodness they were intended. Full review will be coming shortly after I’ve enjoyed this beast for a few more days.

AT&T today confirmed that the LG Thrill 4G will be arriving this summer packed with 3D content. The LG Thrill 4G looks familiar because it’s essentially the LG Optimus 3D but now tied in with AT&T. We first got our hands on the 3D-capable smartphone back when it was announced in February and now it will be ready for the summer with 4G HSPA+. LG’s partnership with Gameloft will also bring more 3D content and games for the device.

What’s nice about the LG Thrill 4G besides supporting 3D image and video capture with its dual array 5-megapixel rear-facing cameras is that it will come with plenty of 3D app support. It will ship with YouTube 3D along with 3D games such as Asphalt 6, Let’s Golf 2, and NOVA. More 3D games can be had from the Gameloft 3D store while 3D movies can be downloaded from mSpot.

The LG Thrill 4G features a 4.3-inch display that supports glasses-free 3D viewing. It has a 1GHz dual-core processor and its dual-array cameras can record 3D in 720p and 2D in 1080p. It will ship with Android 2.2 and support AT&T’s HSPA+ 4G network on launch.

So you love the idea of your new smartphone being able to have some 3D capabilities — your android smartphone that is, but you don’t know if you’ll actually like it and if you do, you don’t know what one to buy. So far the choices are pretty limited and as of right now the upcoming devices are the HTC EVO 3D or the LG Optimus 3D and lucky for you guys I have both. I’ve done a small video and snapped a few pretty close-up photos to hopefully help a few of you eager readers decide on your next phone.

Now that I’ve got the idea brewing in your head as to what device you want feel free to check out my LG Optimus 3D hands-on and unboxing, then after that you can also see my HTC EVO 3D hands-on to get you a little caught up on both devices. I also have some close up photos coming up for you as well. So the mini SlashGear battle begins: What 3D phone should you choose?

First Impressions:

Right away you notice the stellar build quality of the EVO 3D, HTC is known for their top quality hardware and this is no exception. It feels extremely well made and of good material, it has a nice and even weight to it and overall it just feels good in the hand. I wouldn’t call it heavy but it feels “solid”. Then you have the Optimus 3D — It also has a pretty good build quality and its very similar in size to the EVO in all aspects including weight. LG might not be quite up to HTC’s level but they are close and it seems fairly solid as well but I just would rather hold and carry the EVO 3D personally.

3D

Without getting into all this hardware too much I’ll keep most of it for the video and pictures since that is what everyone loves to see right? The video goes over the glasses free display on both devices pretty clearly but I do want to mention a few things regarding that. They both feature 4.3″ glasses free 3D displays and they do a pretty good job at 3D. Obviously these are both the first devices to come to market with glasses free so its just a start.

I don’t know exactly what kind of technology both are using but I feel that the HTC EVO 3D has the edge in 3D as well. The EVO runs a qHD 540×960 high-res display vs the 480×800 of the LG. I’m unsure if those same resolutions come into play during 3D playback but to me the EVO wins in the biggest selling point of these phones — and that is 3D. When you switch either over to 3D for a game or for pictures they get an odd glow to them as well as a bit grainy. Yes the high-res display turns a little grainy when 3D is activated but the 3D effect seems better on the EVO and the grainy effect is also less and that helps with the possible headache “issue”. Its a really close race though and you can see for yourself in my almost up to par video below.

Wrap Up:

To wrap things up if I had to choose one my vote would have to go with HTC. The EVO 3D is just a great all around device. It has Android 2.3 Gingerbread vs the Optimus only having 2.2 on board. The EVO also has that high-res display and we can’t forget about Sense 3.0 on the EVO. That gives it another wow factor as the entire user interface is neat and clean just like the rest of the phone. The 3D effects seemed a little better and more visible to me but this could really go either way since all eyes are different. For me it comes down to the build quality and the addition of Sense 3.0 that makes the EVO 3D the winner in this mini battle for 3D supremacy.

That’s it for now folks, check out the rest of the photos in the gallery below.

Today LG has announced the launch of the new Optimus 3D. We have seen this device many times recently so this wasn’t much of a surprise. It was first revealed in February and we got a little hands-on a few days later. LG announced that the Optimus 3D will be launching today, most likely in an attempt to be beat the HTC EVO 3D to market. Today I have the LG Optimus 3D sitting in front of me so I decided to do another hands-on for you all to enjoy.

This beast of a smartphone packs a dual-core 1 Ghz TI OMAP 4 processor, a 4.3″ glasses-free 3D Display, HDMI out, dual 5 MP shooters on the rear for 3D video capture, a front facing VGA camera and more. LG is calling this the first device on their “Tri-Dual” architecture. What does that mean — dual-core, dual-memory, and dual-channel. I guess you could even say quad-dual since it has dual 5 MP cameras also. The dual channel memory and ram as well as that blazing fast dual-core CPU and all those other features should basically make this one top tier device that can do it all.

I was able to play with it for a while today and overall I’m really impressed. The Optimus 3D feels quite similar to the G2x and even has the same tapered edges on the screen but overall the build quality seemed a little better than that of the G2x. It has a lot packed into a relatively small space and it does seem a little heavy, but when you consider what all is inside I think we can all agree that a few extra pounds might be ok. The Optimus 3D was both heavier and larger than the recently released (and reviewed) HTC Sensation 4G, but it was a close match.

The Optimus 3D will launch on Android 2.2 from what we have been told and along with it comes all sorts of 3D apps and games bundled for our 3D enjoyment. From 3D Games like Asphalt 6 and NOVA and more available for download as well as custom 3D Gallery and 3D Camera apps all specific for this device. As we check out this device more over the coming days we will show you some of the cool features and the 3D glasses free display but for now some beautiful photos and a small video will have to be suffice.

LG announced that the device is launching today (June 17th) starting in Europe and will be available in more than 60 markets around the world in the coming weeks but didn’t give any more information regarding other markets such as the U.S so for now we will have to wait for more news. The wait shouldn’t be long and soon enough you will be able to get your hands on this device. Maybe the LG Thrill 4G from AT&T? Check out the full press release and all the photos below.

LG ROLLS OUT OPTIMUS 3D, WORLD’S FIRST TRI-DUAL ARCHITECTURE SMARTPHONE WITH FULL 3D
Dual-Core / Dual-Channel / Dual-Memory Device Also Delivers Amazing 3D Experience

Seoul, June 17, 2011 – LG Electronics (LG) today officially launched the long-awaited LG Optimus 3D, an innovative new smartphone featuring second generation dual core technology and an advanced “Tri-Dual” architecture. First unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona in February, the LG Optimus 3D offers a full 3D experience — recording, viewing, sharing — in a smartphone form factor.

The LG Optimus 3D takes the smartphone experience into new territory with its Tri-Dual configuration – dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory – which allows for improved performance when multi-tasking, enjoying a movie or playing graphics-intensive games. This LG smartphone is also a major step forward in the utilization of full 3D functionality in everyday life – users can record and immediately view content in 3D without the need for special glasses.

“Tri-Dual architecture opens up a whole new world in smartphone performance,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “As the latest offering in our Optimus line-up, we expect there will be significant interest from those who seek the very latest in smartphone technology and are excited about 3D as the next big frontier in mobile devices.”

Peak Efficiency and Performance Powered by Unique Tri-Dual Configuration
LG’s Tri-Dual architecture pushes the LG Optimus 3D’s performance well beyond simple clock speed improvements. Other smartphones – even those with higher clock speeds and dual-core technology – suffer when it comes to actual performance because of the inefficiency inherent in a single-channel configuration. With a dual-channel configuration, data transfers take place simultaneously between the dual-core and dual-memory, resulting in noticeably faster performance. As a result, the LG Optimus 3D maximizes run-time efficiency leading to noticeably smoother, faster, and longer multi-tasking, browsing, gaming and multimedia enjoyment than ever before.

    Full 3D Experience: 3D Recording-Viewing-Sharing
LG’s full 3D concept transforms 3D technology from a novelty to a practical tool. 3D recording, viewing and sharing is faster and more convenient in the Optimus 3D and can be enjoyed without cumbersome glasses. LG’s latest smartphone enables owners to capture high quality 3D content with 3D video stabilization technology and real-time misalignment correction algorithm which automatically corrects for shake during recording. And the smartphone’s wide viewing angle makes watching videos and movies much more convenient and comfortable.

The 4.3-inch WVGA display offers bright and flicker-free images in HD, up to 1080p in 2D and up to 720p in 3D. Special software allows for real-time conversion of 2D photo and video content into 3D. Free software for converting 2D games will be available for download during the third quarter, letting users enjoy a variety of multimedia content in 3D. Captured 3D content can be shared with 3D TVs via an HDMI 1.4 connection and the phone can also send content to any DLNA Certified™ device. In addition, users can upload and stream 3D content on YouTube’s dedicated 3D channel (www.youtube.com/3D).

The LG Optimus 3D also incorporates the world’s first 3D augmented reality (AR) browser in collaboration with AR pioneer Wikitude. The browser will be available through an app downloadable from LGWorld (www.lgworld.com).

The phone will be available in Europe first, and then in more than 60 markets around the world over the next several weeks.

You certainly can’t accuse AT&T of holding back this morning. Not only is the carrier shouting about the potential benefits of its T-Mobile acquisition but it’s also got a pair of new devices: the Android 2.2 based LG Thrill 4G, complete with 4G connectivity and an autostereoscopic 3D display, and the Windows Phone 7 HTC HD7S.

The LG Thrill 4G is basically AT&T’s branded version of the LG Optimus 3D, complete with a 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D display, dual 5-megapixel stereoscopic camera for shooting 3D stills and video, and a 1GHz dual-core processor. Due “in the coming months” the handset will have access to the LG 3D Space for 3D downloads, and come with 8GB of onboard storage and a pre-loaded 8GB microSD card slot. For more on the LG Optimus 3D, check out our hands-on coverage.

As for the HTC HD7S, that’s AT&T’s version of the HTC HD7, until now only available on T-Mobile in the US. It will be preloaded with AT&T U-verse for on-device video downloads, and have a new Super LCD display for improved usability; considering we criticized the HD7′s display in our review that’s a good thing. It will be available “in the coming weeks” with pricing for both tba.

Important Information about 3D. Response to viewing 3D content varies by individual. Some viewers may experience discomfort (such as eye strain, eye fatigue, dizziness or nausea) while watching 3D content. If you experience any such symptoms, immediately discontinue use of the 3D function and do not resume until the symptoms have subsided. Viewing 3D content for an extended period of time may increase the likelihood of the above symptoms. Frequent breaks are recommended when using 3D functions. Parents should speak to a physician before allowing children under the age of 5 to view 3D content.

That’s the SIM-free and carrier-unlocked price, naturally, so if you head down to your carrier of choice they’ll probably be heavily subsidizing it in return for a two-year agreement.

When we caught up with LG earlier today, to check out the freshly announced Optimus 3D and Optimus Tab, we couldn’t help but wonder about the discrepancy between the smartphone’s 1080p Full HD 3D recording capabilities and the tablet’s 720p HD 3D recording. Turns out, there’s more to a 1GHz, dual-core chipset than just its ARM cores: the Optimus 3D’s Texas Instruments OMAP4430 has native support for Full HD recording in 3D, while the NVIDIA Tegra 2 in the Tab doesn’t.

Talking to TI earlier today, the company was at pains to highlight that it had been talking about – and, more importantly, working on building in support for at the chipset level – Full HD 3D support in its chips since the first days of the OMAP4, whereas rivals have come to those capabilities more recently. That means on Tegra 2 the ARM processor has to do the crunching, whereas in the OMAP4 it’s shunted to dedicated DSP.

TI’s OMAP5, meanwhile, will add in chipset-level support for four simultaneous camera streams, which will mean devices using it will be able to record 3D using twin cameras on both sides. That opens the door to 3D streaming video calls.

LG stated that 3D was one of the trends for mobile devices in 2011 that they want to take a lead with, which is why they created a phone with 3D as its core differentiator. In a joint statement from LG and YouTube the companies stated:

“The new partnership is part of a broader push into 3D entertainment by LG and the world’s largest online video community,” the companies said in a joint statement. “YouTube and LG collaborated to enable the delivery and sharing of 3D video onto mobile devices in a way that makes it simple and easy for consumers.”

LG is the first to admit its 2010 range of devices wasn’t exactly the most inspiring; as the company said to us at MWC 2011 today, “we sat there and watched our rivals bring out smartphone after smartphone.” For 2011 the Korean company’s plans are far more ambitious, hence the LG Optimus 3D and the play for the nascent 3D smartphone market. Hands-on impressions after the cut.

At first glance it’s another big, touchscreen slab, and indeed LG are keen to point out that the 4.3-inch touchscreen works just as well as a 2D display as any of its WVGA rivals. The dual-core TI OMAP4430 processor keeps Android 2.2 Froyo moving swiftly; there will be a Gingerbread update around a month after the Optimus 3D’s initial May 2011 release. Of course, it’s the glasses-free 3D that’s the big story here, and with a tap of the dedicated 3D button on the side you boot into a 3D carousel. That has links to media, the camera, games and other apps.

It’s the camera which most people will be interested in, a pair of 5-megapixel lenses on the back which can either shoot regular video or 3D footage. Played back on the phone, the parallax barrier display does a solid job of presenting a 3D picture, though unfortunately you can’t see it in our video demo. You can also squirt it to a 3D-capable HDTV, either via the HDMI output or wirelessly using DLNA if your set supports it.

Three games, meanwhile, are preloaded, and they also show off the 3D effect reasonably well. You can also play those on a big screen via the HDMI or DLNA; in 3D, too, if your set supports it. The dual-core processor keeps things moving along slickly after a somewhat prolonged boot time.

   />

The question of 3D media remains, however. You can shoot your own videos and photos, but third-party content is in short supply; it’s also going to be tricky finding people to share it with, unless you have friends who also use the Optimus 3D. Of course, as LG says, five years ago the company put a touchscreen on a cellphone and people didn’t get it; now it’s reasonably rare to find a non-touchscreen device. It’s hoping that the glasses-free display technology will similarly catch on, spreading throughout the price range and meaning that there’s more chance your contacts will be able to see the content.

We’ll save our final impressions for the production models – the software on these prototype demo units was relatively buggy, unsurprising given there are still a few months before the Optimus 3D is expected to go on sale. Still, as a differentiator, 3D certainly will help the LG stand out in store displays, and given the number of touchscreen slabs out there, that can’t be a bad thing.

Press Release:

LG OPTIMUS 3D USHERS IN A NEW ERA FOR SMARTPHONES

Breakthrough smartphone brings together high performance with full 3D experience

Barcelona, Feb. 14, 2011 – LG Electronics (LG) today officially unveiled the eagerly- awaited LG Optimus 3D, the high-performance smartphone offering the world’s first full 3D experience, at Mobile World Congress 2011,
The LG Optimus 3D introduces a number of innovative “first” technologies, including the world’s first dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory architecture as well as the first 3D platform allowing for recording, viewing and sharing of 3D content.
Superb Performance with Unique “Tri-Dual” Configuration
The LG Optimus 3D is a showcase of superior speed and power made possible with LG’s unique “tri-dual” configuration — dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory. This configuration enables users to enjoy significantly improved performance and run-time compared to smartphones offering 1GHz dual-core processors.
Unlike other single-channel, single-memory dual-core smartphones, the LG Optimus 3D offers significant performance benefits as a result of the simultaneous — and thus faster — transfer of data between the dual-core and dual-memory. Users can browse web pages, multitask between programs, play games at a higher frame rate and enjoy movies more smoothly and longer than ever before.
“Backed by a combination of superb performance and full 3D, we’re excited about the prospects of the LG Optimus 3D taking the smartphone experience to a much higher level,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “We’ve incorporated every feature for the power user and we think they’ll be pleased with what they see.”

World’s First Full 3D Experience: 3D Recording-Viewing-Sharing
The LG Optimus 3D’s dual 5MP lens camera allows users to capture and record their best moments as images and videos in 3D anytime, anywhere. The LG Optimus 3D’s 4.3-inch WVGA display faithfully recreates the 3D experience without the use of glasses. The display provides bright and flicker-free images allowing users to view 2D (up to 1080p) and 3D (up to 720p) multimedia content. We already knew that the LG Optimus 3D and LG Optimus Pad would be making their debut in Barcelona, but now we have specs and other details to go along with that.

The LG Optimus 3D packs a 1GHz OMAP4 dual-core processor and, the company claims, four times the amount of video decoders than its rivals; that adds up to double the graphics performance of its nearest, unnamed competitor. Of course there’s also the 3D camera and 4.3-inch WVGA glasses-free 3D display, along with DLNA and HDMI support for outputting to external screens.

As for the Optimus Pad (the European version of T-Mobile’s LG G-Slate), that has an 8.9-inch 15:9 1280 x 768 display and Full HD decoding, together with NVIDIA’s 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core CPU. It also packs a 3D camera, though you’ll need glasses to see it on the tablet itself, since the Optimus Pad doesn’t have a special screen like the Optimus 3D. We’ll be checking out both devices with LG tomorrow, so stay tuned for more on SlashGear.

Press Release:

LG UNVEILS PREMIUM LINE-UP AT MWC 2011

SEOUL–(Korea Newswire) February 13, 2011 — LG Electronics (LG) returns to Barcelona this year to introduce two new flagship devices at Mobile World Congress: the LG Optimus 3D, a stunning super-smartphone with unparalleled 3D performance, and the LG Optimus Pad, a true Android tablet optimized with Honeycomb OS designed to offer the full viewing experience of a tablet while still being easy to hold with one hand.

“I`m confident that this year, LG will emerge as a leader in the next generation of smartphone and tablet devices,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “What you see here today is just the beginning — we will continue to innovate with products that address consumer needs and deliver benefits that live up to our `Life`s Good` commitment.”

Aiming to aggressively take a leadership position in the smartphone market in 2011, LG has been earnestly bolstering its premium smartphone line-up, evident by its strong showing at CES last month. There, the company introduced the world`s first dual-core smartphone (LG Optimus 2X), one of the world`s slimmest and brightest smartphones (LG Optimus Black) and the company`s first phone compatible with 4G LTE networks (LG Revolution(TM)). LG products debuting at MWC 2011 build upon this spirit of innovation. Key devices include:

LG Optimus 3D

The LG Optimus 3D packs exceptional features with performance in mind, including an advanced dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory architecture. Equipped with a 1GHz OMAP4 dual-core processor and four times more video decoders than competing designs, the LG Optimus 3D doubles the graphics performance of its nearest competitor allowing users to enjoy superb performance while web surfing, running applications and enjoying multimedia content. In addition, the LG Optimus 3D provides the world`s first full 3D experience covering the full spectrum from recording to viewing and sharing 3D content. It features a dual-lens camera that enables users to capture any moment in true 3D which can then be viewed immediately on the 4.3-inch WVGA glasses-free display. Multiple connectivity options including HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) also make it easy for users to transfer their recorded content to other devices.

LG Optimus Pad

The LG Optimus Pad sets a new standard for tablets by utilizing an 8.9-inch display in a form factor that`s comfortable to use one-handed. With a 15:9 aspect ratio and Full HD 1080p decoding, the LG Optimus Pad offers users an immersive multimedia environment on a 1280 x 768 WXGA resolution widescreen display. The new device sports Honeycomb, Google`s latest platform optimized for tablet devices with an optimized and intuitive PC-like interface for running tablet software. LG`s tablet runs on a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor for unmatched performance and power management. In addition, the LG Optimus Pad is the world`s first tablet with a built-in 3D camera, enabling users to capture vivid image and video content to be viewed on a high definition 3D TV or shared on the web via YouTube 3D.

LG Optimus 2X

The world`s first smartphone with a dual-core processor, the LG Optimus 2X was developed in partnership with graphics processor powerhouse, NVIDIA. The dual-core Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip found in the LG Optimus 2X runs at a clock speed of 1GHz and boasts low power consumption and high performance for playing video and audio. Not only does the LG Optimus 2X mean more powerful multimedia features, the Tegra 2 processor makes for faster, smoother web browsing and multitasks with virtually no screen lag. The LG Optimus 2X offers 1080p HD video playback and recording with HDMI mirroring that expands content on external displays to Full HD quality. The LG Optimus 2X can connect wirelessly to any DLNA-compatible digital device such as HD TVs for a console-like gaming experience, taking full advantage of the phone‟s HDMI mirroring, accelerometer and gyro sensor.

LG Optimus Black

One of the world`s slimmest and lightest Android smartphones, LG Optimus Black is already a hit, having recorded more than two million pre-orders in 20 countries since its introduction at CES. At MWC, a range of special-edition LG Optimus Black handsets will be unveiled featuring designs courtesy of the Keith Haring Foundation. Besides its incredibly slim body, the LG Optimus Black features a 4-inch NOVA display for optimal brightness and readability under any lighting conditions. The crystal-clear display also provides a more natural web browsing experience by displaying truer whites while simultaneously cutting energy consumption by 50 percent compared to conventional LCDs. In addition, the LG Optimus Black includes a collection of smart features designed to improve the user experience, such as Gesture UI, Wi-Fi Direct and a 2MP front-facing camera.

For more information, visit the LG stand at 8B178 in Hall 8, Fira de Barcelona or go to the online newsroom at www.lgnewsroom.com/MWC2011.

As you’d hope, there’s a dual-lens camera array for 3D photography – just as on the LG G-Slate – together with HDMI connection and DLNA support for streaming media.

Details are scant, with a display larger than 4-inches suggested (which we’d guess is most likely to be 4.3-inches) along with a nameless dual-core CPU paired with multi-channel memory. Given LG has jumped aboard the Tegra 2 train with the Optimus 2X, we wouldn’t be surprised to see NVIDIA’s chip at the heart of this device too. Finally there’s a front-facing camera to add to the list. SlashGear will be at LG’s press event at Mobile World Congress in just a couple of weeks time, when we’ll know exactly what the company has in store for us.

Having promised a 3D-capable smartphone sooner rather than later, LG’s MWC 2011 surprise has been prematurely spoiled by a Dutch cellphone retailer. The Phone House – the local arm of Carphone Warehouse – has a new coming-soon page for the LG Optimus 3D, though as All About Phones points out they’re also using a shot of the existing Optimus One.

Still, the name – which is somewhat unimaginative, but at least tells us what the smartphone’s key selling point will be – does confirm that a 3D-capable handset is on the way in Europe at least. We’re guessing LG is using the same sort of autostereoscopic panel as on the Nintendo 3DS, which would obviously mean no special 3D glasses were required.

Android seems the likely OS, but beyond that specifications are unknown. The real question is whether the LG Optimus 3D will prompt the same headaches some 3DS users have complained of, and which could put a serious dampener on enthusiasm for 3D on the go.
