Now that we know what Apple is offering for this holiday season in the iPhone range, it’s time we compare the device (the iPhone 4S) to the most comparable Android devices. This means, of course, that we’ve got to hit up each of the greatest dual-core processor creators for the platform, and with them the latest and best devices running on them. What follows is an exploration of what the best from both of these major players in mobile computing can offer. Let the fight begin!

iPhone 4S

This is the newest device of the pack, it packing a lovely new A5 chip that, optimized to the max for this one single phone, will allow you to play such fantastic games as Infinity Blade II – see a preview of what’s to come in our review of the first in that series of games for iPad 2. This device will be released worldwide and on three of the four major US carriers this month in three models, the least expensive of these being $199 with 16GB storage inside. Some other nice neat new apps revealed at the iPhone event on October 4th were Cards physical greeting cards app and Find My Friends for GPS tracking of all your best buddies. There’s also some little additions to the iPhone line via iOS 5 like the camera shortcut on the lockscreen. Then there’s some real strange things like: Bluetooth 4.0, the lovely fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on both the front and the back, three-axis gyro, and again, a global release on 100 carriers worldwide.

Learn all about the iPhone 4S in our full reveal guide as well as our hands-on look.

Samsung Galaxy S II

The Galaxy S II is one of the most popular Android devices in history. It’s sold over 10 MILLION units worldwide of its original version, and the new versions on AT&T and T-Mobile plus the EVO 4G Touch version are set to be massive sellers as well. This device runs the newest version of Android – as all the Android devices on this list do, but with a special user interface Samsung calls TouchWiz. This interface is the most updated version of what Samsung calls its most optimized interface for users using Android -and it’s quite nice, if I do say so myself, having one in my pocket right this second. Instead of working with the Apple Appstore, you’ll be using the Android Marketplace, one of the most popular app stores in the world after the Apple app store which, if I’m not mistaken, is still beating every other store by a longshot for legitimate checked-and-ready apps. The Samsung Galaxy S II comes in many shapes and sizes but, for the most part, always has the lovely Super AMOLED Plus display, Samsung’s sharpest and brightest in the world. This device comes with an 8 megapixel camera on the back, similar to the 8 megapixel camera the iPhone 4S is using, and another webcam-ready camera on the front, also similar to what the iPhone 4S is using.

This device, as is true of each of the other Android devices on this list, is a powerful choice, and will last you the 2 years you’ll have it on contract unless you’re the sort of person that always needs the most advanced handset around. For you I recommend not purchasing a smartphone at all, as sure enough, several months down the line, no matter what you’ve purchased, you’ll have been trumped by the newest technology.

You can check out our several reviews of this device here:
Samsung Galaxy S II original international edition
Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch

HTC Sensation

The device known as the HTC Sensation is the culmination of HTC’s efforts to create the perfect phone, similar to what Apple has done with the iPhone and Samsung has done with their Galaxy line, here is where HTC puts it all on the line. You get nearly the newest version of HTC’s custom user interface Sense (currently only beat by the feminine device HTC Rhyme at the moment) and the most comfortable shape for a handset that your humble narrator has ever felt hit his palm. It’s shaped to please, ladies and gentlemen, and like the last two devices, this smartphone has the 8 megapixel camera on the back and a webcam-ready camera on the front.

Unlike the previous two devices, this smartphone is only available on T-Mobile here in the USA and on a broader market internationally. HTC generally releases their devices across the sea first, bringing them then to the USA market on one carrier at a time. Prices for this device are, once again, comparable to the first two smartphones.

Motorola DROID BIONIC

The BIONIC is another dual-core device (like all devices on this list), this time in a device that also works on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. This is the only device on this list that can say that it’s got those kinds of upload and download speeds, and it’s also one of the most widely anticipated Android devices to have been released this year. It’s running Motorola’s newest UI over Android and is pushed as a device that can accomplish many things with its several docks and desktop-mode for advanced computing beyond that of a normal smartphone. Apple made fun of the camera on this device because it is said to be significantly slower in taking photos than the competition, meanwhile it has a similar 8 megapixel camera on the back and video chat capable camera on the front.

The DROID BIONIC is only carried by Verizon, and only here in the USA. This makes the device by far the smallest in distribution numbers, but does offer an exclusive sort of feel, if you know what I mean. It’s also got a bit of a curve to the edges of the glass, this making it, the G2x, and the Sensation each part of the curved Gorilla Glass club – strength and a lovely feel.

Review
DROID BIONIC

LG G2x

The LG G2x is, in its original form, the first smartphone in the world to hold a dual-core processor in it. It was called the Optimus 2X then, and it, like I mention above, has one of your humble narrator’s favorite display glasses in the world – a couple of large bends and this device is unique. Inside you’ll find the second most advanced Android operating system out of the box, but it’s instantly ungradable to the newest Gingerbread – as all the other Android devices are on this list. This device has the 8 megapixel camera on the back and the video chat capable camera on the front, and, like the DROID BIONIC and the Galaxy S II, has the ability to play videos via HDMI on your big screen HD TV. The iPhone 4S can do this in a similar way to the Galaxy S II, both of them requiring a special converter cord to do so.

T-Mobile G2x from LG

Processors

Since the Apple processor and the rest of these Android-powering processors aren’t able to all really work on the same benchmark tests, we’ll just have to speak on what we’ve seen here. A dual-core processor on an Android device makes it capable of wiping the floor with all of their single-core counterparts, but unless you’re really ramming away on video and playing the highest-tech games, you’ll not notice a WHOLE LOT of difference in your daily activities. If you’re going to be using your device to play videos through your TV, it’d make a lot of sense to have a dual-core processor. If you’re going to be playing games like Riptide GP for Android, you’ll absolutely NEED a dual-core processor because it requires it.

That said, different processors are doing different things to pump themselves up for consumers – Qualcomm – whose chip sits in the HTC Sensation, recently announced their support for game developers in the Qualcomm Snapdragon Game Pack. Similarly, NVIDIA has a whole NVIDIA Tegra Zone of apps created with the developers to work specifically with their own Tegra 2 dual-core chip – these games are then only playable on NVIDIA-powered devices, including the G2x. Texas Instruments (on the DROID BIONIC) have been finding their way into several big-name devices of late including the Kindle Fire and is rumored to be part of the next Google hero phone Nexus Prime. Samsung sits in this pack with their own Exynos dual-core processor on the Galaxy S II – this processor has been known to beat out competing dual-core processors on benchmarks that are, admittedly, not that precise, but by a LOT in some cases. Finally there’s the A5 dual-core processor from Apple for their newest iPhone 4S, this is a processor that’s quite similar (if not basically identical) to the A5 processor sitting in the iPad 2, the most popular tablet-type mobile device in the world – and by the looks of it, it’ll be at least keeping up with the competition if not beating it due to the small library of devices it must be optimized for.

Anything else you’d like to know? You can see the full specs on the iPhone 4S by heading to our iPhone 4S Hands-on post, then for the rest you can see our http://device.ac/ device archive for the rest: Galaxy S II (AT&T and original), Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, LG G2x, DROID BIONIC, and the HTC Sensation. Let us know which one you’ll pick if you’re in the market!

There’s a device out there made by LG, one that’s got the most powerful dual-core processor LG has ever offered on a handset, one that’s got 4G LTE speed capabilities right along with the ultra-powerful motor. This device has a few names already, a code name LG LU6200 and an obvious street-name, that being the LG Optimus LTE, and now we’ve got a few in-real-life photos of the beast as well. While this isn’t the first dual-core smartphone LG has ever offered, their first being the LG Optimus 2x (aka T-Mobile G2X, the world’s first dual-core smartphone in its first iteration), it’s certainly the most impressive.

This device is said to carry the world’s first AH-IPS LCD display on it’s monstrous 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 pixel resolution screen, and according to our source here today, it carries one of the biggest smartphone batteries on the market at 1830 mAh. That’s as big as the Galaxy S II, USA version or otherwise! Also according to the source we’re looking at today, this device will be launched as the LG Optimus LTE in Korea on the U+ carrier, and is still just to be classified as the model number LG LU6200 for a worldwide release until a more crafty name can be nailed down.

What we’re seeing here also around it’s lovely 8-megapixel camera is a rather unique back panel covering its battery and microSD card slot. It’s got a sort of checker square grid with several different tones. LG has what your humble narrator notes is one of my favorite smartphone builds of all time. Curved Gorilla Glass forever! Thusly this case (even though the display appears to be totally flat) gives one great confidence for the future of LG. Can’t wait to see this one in person!

BONUS: this device will be the first to host the game Street Fighter IV for a period of three months EXCLUSIVELY. That’s a pretty big deal if you’re a Street Fighter fanatic, a pretty big deal indeed.

Today’s edition of the Daily Slash is strewn with rumors and speculation about none other than the fastest selling Android device of all time, that being the Samsung Galaxy S II. I say speculation and rumors because this device is not yet released in the USA, and once it does get here, it could be in basically any shape or form, so watch out! We’ve also of course got reviews of the brand new MacBook Air as well as Mac OS X Lion, not to mention the brand new Toshiba Thrive, the Motorola XPRT, and yes, we do have several giveaways going on this week, all of them for tablets.

First let’s get into this contest business. We’ve got the Tabletpalooza contest coming to a close at the end of this month, therefor our last two tablets are up for grabs, one on Android Community, the other here on SlashGear, and that’s an Acer Iconia Tab A500 and a Galaxy Tab 10.1, both of them fabulous, both of them free. Then we’ve got a cool couple of tablets from down Archos way: one Archos 70 Internet Tablet and one Archos 101 Internet Tablet. Win one! Finally, it’s time to hook you up with the king of HTCs, that being the Sensation as carried by Three in the UK – open to UK residents only, here’s a giveaway you won’t want to miss!

Next I encourage you to take a look at Rue’s weekly roundup for July 24th. This is a weekly event, of course, and I encourage you to take a look at this video each week!

As for reviews, there’s a handful of fantastic looks at computing and mobile that you’ve just got to view, starting with Apple’s new MacBook Air 13-inch core i5 notebook and Mac OS X Lion, both of them being monsters in their own special way. Then there’s the Toshiba Thrive which we’ve got a double dose of: one review by Rue and one review by yours truly. Then we’ve got a review of the new Motorola XPRT and the Motorola TRIUMPH just incase you missed it from last week.

On that note, I need you to take a look at the newest project we’ve got for all your device specification needs. It’s our Android Phone, Tablet, and Devices Database on Android Community. It looks utterly slick and has all the info you need to keep up! Check it out at http://device.ac/ and don’t forget to hit up the individual portals like http://device.ac/nvidia/ – dual core energy!

A few news bits are next, starting with the Samsung Galaxy R, a lower-tier Galaxy S II, HTC Sensation getting ClockworkMod, the brand newest version of the Android Market, version 3.0.27, available for download with a trick, Gingerbread coming to the T-Mobile LG G2X, and HTC bypassing Apple patent ire for their 2012 Android range. Apple has had a couple of really interesting plausible future projects in the works: Assistan Voice Control, a lovely flat, Keyless Keyboard, and of course, face detection API added to iOS 5.

A few columns coming your way as well:

Since T-Mobile pulled the LG G2x from its online store yesterday, there has been plenty of speculation on what’s going on and what’s to happen next. At first it was thought that the phone was pulled due to quality issues, but that was later rebutted by T-Mobile reps saying that popularity and inventory constraints were the reason. And although they admitted to some issues that needed fixing, the phone is apparently still popular enough that they intend on raising its price.

TMoNews just got their hands on a screenshot of an internal memo that clearly marks the G2x for a price increase starting tomorrow, May 27th. According to the memo, the T-Mobile G2x has been so popular since its launch last month that high demand has resulted in inventory constraints. The carrier is currently working with LG to up the supply, but in the meantime must raise the price.

They are perhaps taking a page from the recently launched Verizon DROID Charge by bumping up the G2x now to $299 with a new two-year agreement. Throw in a mail-in rebate and the G2x becomes yours for $249. The memo mentioned very little about the quality issues, with only a note that a “small percentage” of customers have complained about some issues, which an upcoming update should resolve. We still think quite positively of the phone, check out our full review of the G2x.

Yesterday, its was noticed that T-Mobile’s G2x had mysteriously disappeared from the carrier’s online store. A search for the device only turned up accessories but not the phone itself. TMoNews had first suspected that the device may have been pulled due to several quality issues that the phone has been experiencing since day one. However, this morning T-Mobile responded via Twitter with a different reason for the disappearance.

T-Mobile tweeted early this morning explaining that they pulled the G2x from their website due to a shortage on inventory. Their statement reads, “The T-Mobile G2x has been very popular and high demand has resulted in inventory constraints, which we are working to address. We are working with LG to address inventory constraints and expect to return to normal levels in the coming weeks.”

However, another T-Mobile spokesperson admitted that “a small percentage of customers have commented about possible improvements” to the G2x. The rep also confirmed that T-Mobile is working with LG to deliver a firmware update to the G2x that should offer “some performance enhancements.” This update may fix the random rebooting problem and hopefully arrive with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update slated for this summer.

Once again, if you haven’t already, you can find out more about the T-Mobile G2x from our full review.

Verizon is building up a small collection of LTE smartphones on its new 4G network, and the LG Revolution is third to the party. Following the HTC ThunderBolt and Samsung DROID Charge, the Revolution ironically sticks to the theme of a single-core processor and a 4.3 display. Read on for our first impressions.

Inside the sober black chassis there’s Qualcomm’s 1GHz CPU running Android 2.2 Froyo. Interestingly, Verizon has opted for Microsoft’s Bing search and mapping for the Revolution, rather than the more common Google offerings. That’s obviously allowed in Android’s TOS, but has previously proved a less than popular decision among buyers. It also gets a 5-megapixel camera (along with a 1.3-megapixel front webcam) rather than the 8-megapixel shooters of the Charge and ThunderBolt.

Verizon is positioning the Revolution as an entertainment phone, preloading the Netflix app and bundling a 16GB card rather than the usual 8GB, plenty for lots of video. There’s also that HDMI output for hooking the smartphone up to an HDTV. That’s welcome, as the Revolution’s 4.3-inch LCD display is nothing special compared to the Super AMOLED Plus panel on the DROID Charge.

Brightness set to 100% for both devices.

In fact, Verizon’s pricing on the Revolution is something of a curiosity. At $249.99 – with a new, two-year agreement – it’s certainly in the premium range, and yet it falls short not only of the specs we’ve seen from dual-core powerhouses elsewhere, but from the two LTE handsets Verizon already offers. We’ll be looking to find LG’s special sauce in time for the full SlashGear review, so until then enjoy the hands-on video and unboxing gallery!

T-Mobile’s G2x may be one of its hottest phones right now, but there may be some quality issues with the device that have gotten the device pulled from T-Mobile.com. According to TMoNews, a search for the device on the carrier’s website currently only turns up G2x accessories, as the the device itself has mysteriously disappeared.

The G2x has been plagued with issues including random reboots, light leaks, and other quality control issues since its release. Some initially thought the G2x simply had firmware issues, but the recent disappearance could suggest much more serious hardware issues.

T-Mobile is also set to have a midnight sale today, but tweeted late last evening that the devices to be offered for the sale will now be the G2 and the Sidekick 4G, instead of the G2x. This is an interesting development, and we’ll keep you posted on whether T-Mobile confirms any issues for the G2x. In the meantime, you can take a look at our review of the G2x.

So you may be wondering, if you’re the sort of person who likes to see hands-on and unboxing videos at the first available source, why SlashGear doesn’t have ours up yet. As it turns out, our main man Vince does in fact have SlashGear’s unit in hand, but also happens to be on an airplane with no Wifi. He’s a busy dude! Therefor you can expect a full hands-on experience from SlashGear soon, but not right this moment. While we’re here, let’s talk about the G2x anyway!

This device is T-Mobile’s LG debut of a dual-core experience on Android. Inside you’re going to find a fabulous NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz dual-core processor and a smooth, Vanilla flavoring of Android 2.2 Froyo. You’ll be able to use Adobe FlashPlayer, a slew of high-powered games available via NVIDIA’s Tegra Zone, and video chat! There’s a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front, and an 8 megapixel camera on the back for all your media collection needs.

Then when you feel like showing off, or if you’d just like a bigger screen for games, you can connect this device via its HDMI output (cord not included.) This device weighs and unbelievably small 5 ounces and has a stripped-down feel in its hardware components. Its dimensions are 4.88″ x 2.48″ x .43″, its display is 4.0″ at 480 x 800 pixels, and its bright as heck with WVGA TFT going on in the face. Basically fabulous.

The photo you see above is from Android Community, who will also be rolling through this device all day long. All day!

In a press release Friday, Jim Alling, T-Mobile Chief Operations Operator, answered some of the questions we’d seen posed by the community in the wake of the biggest news this week. In a press release sent to “Dear Valued T-Mobile Customers”, Alling assuaged the fears and lauded the benefits of the merger. From a purely technical standpoint it’s going to be a great move for the US wireless network, if everything goes well during the regulatory and review process over the next year, there’s going to be a double-thick wireless network from the overlapping mesh of LTE towers all under AT&T’s hand.

There have been dark rumblings from those use T-Mobile about only having a year for their G2x’s. This isn’t going to be a technical issue. With both companies using SIM cards and with the merger going down over the course of a year. AT&T and T-Mobile will both be working together to ensure that customers will have no trouble migrating their devices over to AT&T’s network. Anything else just doesn’t make much sense. You might not even have to change your SIM card. I kept my Cingular SIM card for multiple years after their merger with AT&T. It worked the whole time, it just drew a lot of jibes from the salespeople whenever I got a new phone. Really, LTE devices are LTE devices, and most of the integration of the network is going to happen on the back-end.

Q: Will I have to upgrade my T-Mobile 3G/4G device after the acquisition closes?

A: T-Mobile has no plans to alter our 3G / 4G network in any way that would make your device obsolete. The deal is expected to close in approximately 12 months. After that, decisions about the network will be AT&T’s to make. That said, the president and CEO of AT&T Mobility was quoted in the Associated Press saying “there’s nothing for [customers] to worry about… [network changes affecting devices] will be done over time… ”
